My brother-in-law called this morning and said that his dogs found a rabbit in their yard.  I know it wasn’t his dogs that went after it but I think they were more protecting it.  We went over to the house to look at it.  We’re pretty sure it was attacked (maybe by a racoon or hawk), laying on it’s side and couldn’t get up but could move it’s legs.  The poor thing!  We had a box with rags in it and put it in the box and I called the vet up.  We dropped it off about an hour ago and are waiting on a call back.  I couldn’t just leave it in the yard for something else to get it…I know I wouldn’t want to go that way.  We couldn’t keep it upstairs if it had any disease but I didn’t want to just let it sit there and wait for it to pass in our basement…just not the way to go I think.  So if there’s nothing they can do; at the very least we can let it pass on in peace and euthenize it.    I don’t know how people that rescue animals do this for a living, it just made me sad to see the poor little thing laying there helpless   I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of rabbit it is though if anyone could help me?  It was white, red eyes and light grey ears (might have been grey on the nose but I couldn’t tell).  It looked pretty well taken care of.  They live in Amish country and a lot of amish have rabbits, so I’m guessing it got out somehow.  We thought of the name Angel for it.

It was kind of you to take him to the vet so they could help him cross the bridge. It’s hard to see animals suffering and you did the right thing.

Thanks Sarita. They just called and said that with his injury it looked like it got hit by a car. It was really far from the road though unless one of the dogs dragged it back….I dunno. They also have 4-wheelers so that could have been it if someone was on that. But they did help it cross the bridge. I’m glad he/she is in peace now

Thanks guys! When I think about that poor bunny we can’t help but think about Archie. He was running loose and the same thing could have happened to him. He’s getting an extra treat tonight and lots of pets! My vet is absolutely amazing for letting us drop it off and looking at it right away. I asked them how much I owed them and she said don’t worry about it.

EDIT: I’m pretty sure this is what it looked like.  On petfinder they have Californian for the description.  Does that sound about right?  I’d really like to know the breed.

My friend has a californian and the pic and your description sound the same! Her ears and nose change colors from lighter to darker throughout the year with the rest of her body remaining white. And coincidentally enough, she also has red eyes. lol

I’m so sorry about the bunny. Hopefully it didn’t suffer long.

Yes, that’s a Californian. I’ve had many and love these rabbits. Big gentle rabbits.
