Does anyone here have a small dog who does the reverse sneezing thing? And if so, what do you do about it?

I’ve had Jenna looked at to be sure she doesn’t have collapsing trachea, and the vet thinks she’s okay…but she’s having more of these ‘heavy breathing’ episodes that remind me of a human’s asthma attack. It distresses her and I can’t seem to help except to gently rub her throat and calm her.

If anyone has a suggestion, I’d be grateful!

        Many thankies in advance!

My mom’s dog does it a lot. We have noticed if we cup our hand over his nose it helps him calm down quickly.

Sometimes if we get his mind on something else like his favorite toy or asking if he wants to go out he usually stops immediately. But if it is a really bad episode we rub his neck and cup our hand over his nose.

It really freaked me out the first time he did it.

My dog Bonnie who lives with my parents does this all the time. We would just try and calm her with rubbing her throat and cupping her nose as already mentioned. She gets it really bad when she does it, the snorting and gagging. I hope this helps some.

One of my deceased dogs suffered from stress-induced dyspnea, called laryngeal paralysis, where her throat muscles constricted upon her getting excited. It was extremely hard to manage. It didn’t manifest as ‘reverse sneezing’ though, but labored breathing to the point of collapse. So Jenna may not have this. The tough part is, it’s really hard to show it to a vet! Did your vet do a laryngoscopy on your dog yet? Does Jenna ever have trouble breathing when she barks? This would be the red flag that she needs a laryngoscopy.
