Everyone who knows me knows I am a dog and puppy fanatic! I will drop whatever I am doing when I see a dog or a puppy. But that unfortunately leaves me in a position that people are cruel and uncaring. I often find dying dogs on my doorstep or beaten dogs in my yard.

Last night it was a newborn *as in amniotic sack still on the puppy* in my dog Lucky (RIP) old dog house that he liked to relax in when we went outside. I discovered this because I let the dogs out and my old girl dog Cocoa kept attacking my other dogs as they went near the dog house. I knew instantly because she is the “mother” dog to anything smaller than her.

I picked the little puppy up and opened the sack *yuck btw* and it is so skinny I didn’t even know dogs could be born that thin. Poor thing . I wiped it off and set it and Cocoa a crate up in the bunny room (Only place the dogs aren’t allowed) and put an xpen up so the bunnies can’t get near them. It is a little scary how thin this puppy is. I am used to puppies with tiny little round bellies.

I mixed up some puppy formula and a newborn puppy bottle. I could only get it to take 1/4 of an ounce but at least it took something. I called up the vet and he looked her over and said other than being so thin she seems to be healthy. She is very long and has short little legs. And is extremely strong for a newborn puppy when you hold her to feed her she will push against your hand and you have to hold the bottle tight or she will knock your hand right off of it.

I am not getting my hopes up that she will make it but I am going to give her my all. I wish I knew who put that puppy in my yard they would get more than a piece of my mind!

The vet thinks from her body structure that she is a dachshund mix but being so young there is no way to know. Poor baby….

If she lives I am naming her Mojo don’t know why but when I seen her eating that was what popped in my head.

I will take pictures soon but be warned she is very thin.

I am not glad that they dropped the little pup on your door but glad that it came to someone who cares and knows how to take care of the baby! At least the puppy ate something, even a small amount. I hope she does well!

Disgusting… and how’d if you hadn’t found the puppy in time? people are so selfish!
Unfortunetly I’ve heard stories like that much to often, just sickening. ok … end of my rant. :p

Good luck with the pup, it’s hard work to hand raise a little baby but it sounds like you have it all under control.

I have actually raised a few babies through hand feeding. But never seen one this skinny I don’t know if that is just her genes or if it is something else.

I am going to ask around and see if I can’t find out who had the momma dog. Let’s just say they better hope I don’t find out who they are. Lol I have a very protective instinct when it comes to animals especially baby animals who can’t defend themselves.

You are such an angel for taking care of the little guy like that. You should give yourself a big pat on the back. Poor little thing.

That is just horrible. I cannot believe people. How often does this happen? I don’t remember your situation at this time, is there any possibility of you moving somewhere and keeping quiet about your love of dogs, or implementing some kind of security/surveillance system? I wonder if charges could be pressed against the people dumping animals off on you, even if not about the animals in particular, for something like trespassing.

Obviously this puppy needs help, but I think it’s ridiculous that these people force you to feel obligated to care for it. I wish the very best for the puppy…

Little puppy survived the night! She is not taking well to the bottle I think the puppy bottle nipple is too stiff so going to try a small baby bottle instead.

Had a bit of a freak out this morning when I woke up and the umbilical area was bleeding but I got it to stop pretty quickly now just have to keep an eye on it for infection.

Beka27: This happens quite often not just dogs. I have 3 adult cats and 4 kittens who hang around my house. Tried to find them homes but no one around here wants cats. So I got them all spayed and neutered and now they just lounge on my porch or in my yard they refuse to leave the yard you walk onto the driveway they sit at the edge and stare at you like “ummm no you come over here”. So I just let them stay would try to integrate them into inside cats but my dogs would try to eat them lol. They do have a room with a cat door they can come into and leave as they please but only 2 of the kittens come in regularly the others come in long enough to eat and nap and then leave.

I have had all sorts of animals set down at mine and my mom’s house ducks, dogs, cats, ferrets, fish, turtles, a turkey, chickens, caged birds, baby squirrels, etc.

I actually ordered a video surveillance system a week ago just waiting for it to get here. I don’t think anything legally can be done but now I will know who does it and I can “do” something about it.

I would never turn away an animal in need but I will also no willingly let someone be irresponsible and get away with it.

Glad to hear the pups doing ok again today. How often do you have to feed a puppy?

I lady who rescues Chinchillas just by chance went out her back door that she rarely uses, to find a box on the step… inside the sadest chinchilla you’d even seen. He came into the rescue I volunteer with because he needed a lot of Vet care, and the women had no room for another chinchilla. The poor chin has a ripped ear and little to no hair on it’s entire back. This isn’t the first time this has happend, we once got a box with chinchillas, rabbits, gerbils and a hamster in it. Not everyone in the box servived and the rabbits and chinchillas were covered in marker, like someone had drawn on them, both animals ears were eaten off by the others. It was aweful.

Glad to hear about the surveillance system, if you can catch someone on tape doing this, then maybe they can be charged with animal abandonment or cruelty with your local animal control. (I’m trying to get surveillance at our barn b/c things keep going missing)

That is awful about the chinchilla reminds me of a bunny a friend of mine rescued a long long time ago.

I am not sure what happened to them. A neighbor thinks she knows who has the momma dog but isn’t 100% sure. Puppy has had a bit of a downfall today I could only get it to take a tiny tiny bit of food. Hoping I don’t end up having to have the vet put in a feeding tube. If it wasn’t so skinny I wouldn’t be freaking out. But I am not sure if the skinniness has to do with the health, the way it was born or because of how long it is.

Is there any chance it wasn’t left there by a person? I’m wondering if a stray or wandering dog could have sensed the doghouse was a safe place, birthed the pup and then thought it wouldn’t survive so just left it?

Regardless of how it got there, you are wonderful for taking care of it.

I thought of a dog but I have a 7′ fence and no holes or anything so unless a dog a pregnant dog at that can jump really really high I don’t think it was a dog. I even went all the way around the back of my fence to make sure there wasn’t anything leaning up against it that a dog could have climbed.

My gate unfortunately is very easy to unlock from the outside so anyone can enter my backyard at anytime. Been planning to get an extra lock for the bottom on the inside so even if they unlock the top lock the bottom one will keep it in place.

I’m sorry to hear of this, Sonn. ((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))

Take heart in knowing that you gave this little one the love she needed for the brief time of her life. Sometimes creatures come into our lives for only a short time to soak up all the love and care they can get and then they can move on. She was in excellent hands with you and now curls up in the hands of the Father.

Be happy in Paradise, little pup. ((((((((((((((Mojo)))))))))))))))))

While trying to post this through the server errors (about 5 times) I was sifting through some old emails in my documents…I found this one quite by accident sent by my best friend years ago. It’s not spot on, but it’s so sweet I hope you can glean some comfort from it.

Bless you, Sonn. I know stuff like this is hard, but you are such an angel. ((((((hugs)))))

                                                PUPPY SIZE
This is one of the neatest stories I’ve ever heard. You will know precisely what this little girl is talking about at the end

“Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We’ve been back to this animal shelter at least five times. It has been weeks now since we started all of this,” the mother told the volunteer.

“What is it she keeps asking for?” the volunteer asked.

                                                “Puppy size!” replied the mother.
“Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that’s what she’s looking for.”
“I know… we have seen most of them,” the mom said in frustration… Just then Danielle came walking into the office.

“Well, did you find one?” asked her mom.
“No, not this time,” Danielle said with sadness in her voice. “Can we come back on the
                                                weekend?”

The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed.

“You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there’s always a supply,” the volunteer said.

Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door.

“Don’t worry, I’ll find one this weekend,” she said.

Over the next few days both mom and dad had long conversations with her. They both felt she was being too particular.

“It’s this weekend or we’re not looking any more,” Dad finally said in frustration.

“We don’t want to hear anything more about puppy size,” Mom added.

Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning. By now Danielle knew her way

around, so she ran right for the section that housed the smaller dogs. Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first

row of cages. There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times when visitors weren’t permitted.

Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look. One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each one. One by one she said, “Sorry, you’re not the one.” It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup. The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer.

“Mom, that’s it! I found the right puppy! He’s the one! I know it!” she screamed with joy.

                                                “It’s the puppy size!”

“But it’s the same size as all the other puppies you held over the last few weeks,” Mom said.

“No not size…the sighs. When I held him in my arms, he sighed,” she said. “Don’t you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told me love depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love, the bigger the sigh!”

The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a little of both.

“Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home from work and hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms,” she said.

Then holding the puppy up close to her face she said, “Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart!”

Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh. The caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day.

They are the sighs of God. Take the time to stop and listen; you will be surprised at what you hear. “Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”

There are only four questions of value in life
What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made?
What is worth living for and what is worth dying for?
The answer to each is the same…only love

“We forget what a gift every single breath is that we’re given. Every breath that we take is a great gift, and we never pay respect to that” – Johnny Depp

That helped very much. I actually had a similar experience when I was young.

I’m sorry Sonn. I’m happy the puppy was with someone who cared, instead of some moron who didn’t. (((Hugs!)))
