Never heard of that before.  It’s certainly different.  I, myself, don’t think I could do that with mine.  If they do go before we move out of this house I plan on crementing them so I can take them with us when we move in our ”forever” home.  I was looking through the photo gallery and they had a rabbit on there but it just didn’t look right to me unlike the dogs and cats looked more natural.

My grandpa is a taxadermist; I always tease my husband that when one of them goes that we could get them stuffed…I only joke though   I just wonder if you did really want that done that a taxadermist would be a lot cheaper than freeze drying them.  I would think they would last longer too.  But it’s your opinion if you’d want to do that or not.

I have to be honest – it’s a bit creepy to me – reminds me of taxidermy. I have had all mine cremated and to be honest (I have so many) I’m not sure what to do with all the boxes – I have them in a drawer in my home and I know they won’t replace my rabbits or cat either. I guess I’ll eventually find a place to bury them like at a pet cemetery.

And really, this is not going to take the place ever of your pet and it may really creep people out who come to your home. I think photos are better.

To tell you the truth I would not do this because for me it would just make me really sad. I would see the stuffed figure and it would feel as if I had my pet, but I actually didn’t. It would just make me ten times sadder, seeing the dead body of my beloved animal…

Also I think it is kinda creepy… it reminds me of coroline when the old ladies stuffed all their westies once they died.

I’m going with creepy too. I do understand some people feel better with keeping something, even a body to help them with closure and remembering.
I however feel our bodies are just temporary, and it’s our spirit that is important. All my pets have been privetly creamated, and i have their ashes saved.
When I hadn’t lost one of my own larger pets, i didn’t think I cared about keeping any part, nevermind ashes, but i found when it actually happened and i had to make that decision, having them ended up being important to me.

But to have the body of a deceased in my home, however perserved… no thanks. Not my thing.

This was an interesting story i read a while ago – http://www.allvoices.com/contribute…win-sister

I felt actually sad for that little old lady.

I actually shed a few tears when I looked at the images of those preserved animals – I felt so sorry for the owners who must be so heartbroken that they chose to do this. Although an atheist, my feeling is that this is not giving that particular pet a peaceful rest though. I don’t know, but I don’t think that is paying respect to the dead to do such a thing.

I rather have small videos of my pets …which reminds me to get the camera out a bit more often!

But I would not point fingers at people who choose to do this. We all grieve in different ways. And some people may just be equally disturbed by the fact that we have buried Jack in our garden in a small coffin and intend to digg him up once we move to our house, as I want him to rest where we are.

I’m going with creepy as well. I can understand some people being comforted by it but I personally would break down every time I walked past my preserved pet. But then again I can barely look at old pictures of past pets without breaking down it’s been 16 years since my first pet “rat named Billy” died and I can find his little harness or a picture and I get teary.

I keep personal belongings collars, favorite toy, etc. All of my pets get buried I have a little pet cemetery each have their own headstone with an engraving and a embedded picture. I can’t do the cremating thing for some reason. I have a few that were cremated and it gets to me to see the boxes even though they are beautiful boxes.

bunnymum16, it reminded me of taxidermy as well, and I think the advice that having taxidermy done is less expensive with the same effect is good.
This strikes a nerve in many people, but really you are not alone in feeling that you might like it. That’s why taxidermy has been done for hundreds of years. I would honestly have to add that it is not for me, but I hope you don’t feel badly because others don’t see the appeal. We all do different things to memorialize our pets and whatever gives you comfort is a good choice as long as no one is taking advantage of your grief. (Financially, mostly.)

I have to correct myself with the taxidermy site because I was telling my mom about this site.  We were talking about my grandpa’s taxadermy and she said that she was pretty sure that taxadermists couldn’t do pets (which I didn’t get if they already died of natural causes) but anyways….she remembered my grandpa talking about rabbits once and saying he doesn’t like to do them because they are really hard and don’t look the same when stuffed because of their skin.  Sorry if that’s a bit graphic or such but just in case anyone ever did think about that then you know that it might not look the same.  But yes I agree a bit creepy, I know our families would think that.  I’m used to seeing deer, fish, even a squirrel at my grandpa’s but he’s in the business and those are wild animals.  Pets I just wouldn’t care to see that.

Pet cremation is very popular in Japan. A lot of people prefer having pet companions over children (hence the low birth rate… eh) and thus the boom of pet cremation.

Taxodermy is really scary. I feel sad to see it, even if the animal died naturally

I am all for cremation, but I would rather bury my animal.
My grandma buried her 2 cats under her cherry tree and they give her lotsa cherries every year

I’ve been looking around for a perfect scrapbook. I have pictures of Chacha I need to get printed, from the time she was a baby til now. I want to save those memories

dont worry you guys..i just wanna see your opinions about this.it does make sense that it might be harder to stuff a bunny because of how their body is.i asked my friends about it too and theyre totally creeped out about it.

We bury our animals, but we leave the collars, sort of like giving a family member a necklace, something to remember us by. I also wouldn’t be able to cremate a pet, to me its like destroying them. I couldn’t bear to turn any body, animal or human, to ashes. I still can’t get over watching my sister spread my grandma’s ashes over where we buried the cats. The roses planted overtop are more beautiful this year though.

The whole freeze-dry / preserve them thing, to me. thats just sick. no offence.

I had the same exact reaction!

Needless to say, I don’t think this would be for me either… Seeing a stuffed or freeze-dried version of my pet would not make me feel any better about his passing and it would probably scare the bajeezus out of anyone that came to visit.

I am for cremation. I particularly would not want to bury a euthanized animal under any sort of food-bearing plants in my yard – there is some suspicion that the burial of animals whose bodies carry those chemicals does lead to some soil contamination. So that of course depends on the method selected, but not being a vet or environmental scientist I wouldn’t trust burying pets who passed from anything but natural causes. The transmission of contagious diseases is also a cause for concern, and I generally feel that cremation is the safest and best option for loved pets passed. Of course it is expensive and not necessary in some cases, but I certainly don’t want to keep a stuffed pet around and I think that environmentally cremation is superior to burial.

Just my 2 cents, though. I don’t really judge what other people choose to do, even if that is to have the bodies of their pets kept in their homes forever. I would not find them comforting, but we all find different things affect us differently.

I’ve had all my past pets cremated and I keep the little box on a shelf with the picture and fave belongings beside it. My cat Ash was cremated and we got a beautiful handpainted urn of a cat sleeping on a ledge and had it painted to look just like him. I think it’s disrespectful to preserve an animal in that way. I know I wouldn’t want my relatives to do that to me!!! It’s way too unnatural. I don’t think I could ever get over a death if the pet was still in my home, looking the same.
