I bought a brand new computer a year ago! The day after the warranty runs out it won’t power on… And the power brick decided to start beeping…

I take it to a repair place because I get impatient trying to fix them I can but I don’t like to lol. The guy calls me and says it can’t be fixed  what? It needs a new power board… Ok so replace it… He can’t ? I thought that was his job. Then I call back to see if he sells any external hard drives so I can transfer all of my stuff onto a different computer. Sure he does! Oh by the way I can fix your computer ? Um but I was just told you can’t… Oh yeah I definitely can but it will run between $150-$600 for a new power board … That’s ok I will just come pick it up.

I get there and what he told me over the phone was free (to look at it and take it apart) he charged me $80 for “maintenance” what maintenance? But I didn’t fight it and just went home. I get it out of the case and OMG it has 2 giant gashes on the top casing. Luckily that can be covered with a “ding”. But I will be paying him a visit tomorrow.

And I will be paying $25 to a better place to have my board replaced. $600  please!

Sounds like a crappy place. Gashes? WTH?!? If he treats people’s property so badly, how is he still in business? Geesh. i’m outraged on your behalf! lol

Good luck with the other place! I’m sorry your computer died. I have an HP and it gets really hot so I’m always worried about mine overheating and blowing up or something. lol It has shut itself down before when it’s overheated, but still. And apparently HP knows about this issues but won’t do anything to fix it since apparently it’s the battery from what I’ve read on their site support boards.

            …eh?

bunbuns, sounds like you need better fans in your case, or on the vid card.

Sonn, is it the motherboard, or the power supply that you need?

I had a Dell like that, the same kind of issue and they knew about it too.  In fact they got taken to court (in the US) because of it and lost because it was shown they knew there was a motherboard problem and they were prone to overheating and dying and kept the design anyway.  Unfortunately I’m in Canada and our class action lawsuit is still going on.  My Dell is still in the basement, gathering dust and is completely obsolete by now!

I am not even sure at the moment. I am going to take it apart and look at it myself tomorrow.

Yea if that guy was calling something in your computer a “powerboard” I wouldn’t take it back to him ever again. There is no such thing. I am guessing he means the power supply which a decent one would run you about 80$ ….not 600. You could get an entire new computer that would play video games at a decent rate for 600. What the heck is that guy on? I hope you will have better luck at your other repair shop good grief!

About overheating, there is a free program you can download which tells you how hot your computer is running and what fans are running at which speeds and you can increase your fans speed as well. It will also say if its your videocards fan that is pooping out so you know exactly which fan is being the slacker. Also if you have places for more fans you could always buy some more and put them in, they go for about 5-10$. Is it a laptop? If so you could purchase a “cooling pad” for it – also if it is a laptop you could open up the fans and dust them off. Fans really attract the dust and pet hair. My laptop would hardboot itself everyfew months from overheating because of hair stuck in the cooling area. It was a dell. ha….was.

Be asking for the $80 back for damages at least!

I took the computer apart and it was an easy fix the power jack was loose… It took my 5 or so minutes to fix it. Heading up to the repair place now to get my money back lol

I do have a laptop and also a cooling pad for it. i was thinking it probably needs cleaned due to all the rabbit fur flying around here. lol Thanks for the link. I know HP had a recall last year for batteries overheating or something. I know my model wasn’t included and on the support pages, many people with my model were posting complaints about overheating. So who knows.
