So some of you might recall us posting a few months ago about how Aeryn had learned how to get the clips on the condo door open and break free.  We put a padlock on it, leaving the key in it so that we don’t need to worry about losing it.  At the time we wondered how long it would take her to figure out how the key works.  Well tonight we got the answer.  We thought it might just be a fluke but she’s done it 3 times this evening.  We’ve repositioned the lock so it’s not as easy for her to get at, and if she still manages to do it then we’ll have to remove the key (and hope we don’t lose it).

And people think rabbits are just dumb animals.

        – Annette

             Love it!

Better make sure you put the car keys up on a key rack.

How funny! She is smart and determined too. I guess she wants to be free roaming.

Scooter here. We are trying to get video of Aeryn using keys. Unfortunately, she’s also smart enough to hop off when she thinks the “flashy box” is nearby, and go up to the top of her condo to pretend that she’s completely innocent and not doing anything.

The lock is currently positioned so that she has to rotate it so the key is inside the cage, then turn the key to pop the lock, then push hard enough to break free. She can do all three, but seems to have forgotten how to do the first. For now.

When I had a lock on her condo, I hung the key on a chain near the lock.  That way it was there and I couldn’t lose it, but there was very little chance that Pepper would be able to get the key into the lock to open it

I have to see this. What about a hidden camera, like in an open book or a teddy bear?

Scooter here. Well, she’s done it. I left the key in the lock by accident. There’s basically no way you can do that and have the lock rotated so it’s inside the cage. And Annette was in the living room, heard Aeryn rattle the cages, thought “ha! you can’t get out without the key!”, and was startled when Aeryn popped out, followed by Tegan.

So Aeryn rotated the lock so the key faced inside the cage, turned the key, pushed the lock off, and tugged on the cage door until she popped the top binder clip to get out. That’s about four separate steps!

And no, we still haven’t figured out a way to video this without her knowing. And with all due respect to everyone, if we do we’ll send it to America’s Funniest Home Videos first. Might as well try to win $10,000 or $100,000.

Haha! Do that! A chance of winning plus exposure of how smart rabbits can be. I’m thinking now if you do figure out a way how to have a candid camera, Aeryn will get out AND figure out a way to tamper with the camera too.
