Ok, so im in LOVE with this shelter bun, but I can’t get her yet. i still dont have the money……. But I am SSSSSSOOOOOO Worried that someone will adopt her. The only thing keeping me afloat is that she is scheduled for a spaying, and 1. they don’t adopt any buns out until they are spayed or neautered (How GREAT is that!?) and 2. she’ll have to recover. BUT I AM WORRIED!

Better start saving a bunch now! Bunnies cost alot, you’ll want to have a vet fund set up in addition to the adoption price.

She comes all spayed, (I know that) and with a vet check in advanced(I think that).

Your parents should fill out an adoption application ahead of time, get approved for adoption, and then the rescue might be able to hold the bunny for you. Adoptions can take some time, so I would not wait to get the application process started.

The good news (bad news?) about shelters… there will always be more bunnies to choose from. So even if this bun did get adopted, don’t give up.

I agree with MB… definitely save up for toys, supplies, and those insane vet bills. I spent $260 at an exotic vet clinic on Jeannie last weekend (and since I’m living out of state this summer, the closest clinic my usual vet referred me to happens to be a 65 mile trip, one way! gah!) becasue she had a sniffly nose and I’m looking at probably another 130 mile excusion for a refill on her meds and then a post-medication check up to make sure she’s in the clear… meaning another $100 or so of my paycheck will go to the vet. Sorry to thread jack I was just venting b/c vet bills add up fast, unfortunately.

Anyway, a word of warning about the vet check up from the shelter… the shelters and rescues that I’ve had experience with (and I’ve adopted 3 animals – 2 bunnies and 1 dog – in the past year from 3 different places) have an adoption contract that you (or your parents if you’re under age) must sign before they’ll release the bunny to you. It’s a legally binding contract and typically there will be a clause in that contract stating that you are required to take the bunny to your vet for a vet check up within a week or two of adoption.

And as for getting your heart set on a particular bunny… I know how that is! I had my eye on a gorgeous black and white lop but he got adopted before I was ready to adopt a bunny of my own… I looked and looked and then found Leroy a few months later, and I couldn’t be more happy with the way things turned out. I love my little man to bits and he always makes me laugh! So sometimes the right bunny finds you

Good point Barbie!  I didn’t think about that.  This was a requirement with both of my bunnies.  Adoption contracts will usually require you to provide the name and address of your vet, so it’s important that you have a rabbit vet in mind.  The timeframe for 1st vet visit will vary, but this is a way for them to be sure you will be taking responsibility for their health.

Re. Beka27 and Barbie… On the bright side, many shelters have arrangements with local vets where your first vet visit is either free or heavily discounted. Check with the shelter, it might save you some money!

Go ahead and get your adoption approval sorted if you haven’t yet. There WILL be other bunnies that you will fall for. Believe me!

Definitely! I see bunnies every day that I want to bring home. Good thing hubby has placed a limit on me, or we’d be over run

If this is the angora you were asking about in another thread, I’m not surprised. That is a popular breed that doesn’t tend to stay in shelters for long. Fill out the application with your parents so when you see another bunny you like, there isn’t anything standing in your way.

I would still recommend you go to the shelter to pick a bunny out. You’ll get a better idea of what they are like, moreso than just looking at their pictures.

I will. Only problem is that the shelters kinda outta the way. But I will. By the way, I mentioned Brooklyn, and an angora being adopted. It was NOT Brooklyn, but another angora at a different shelter. Brooklyn is not avalible for adoption until October.
