I was reading along like I do looking for bunny stuff.  I still don’t have a pen for Honey Bunny.  She is walled off in a corner of the bedroom during the day by large boxes that are weighted down.  Seems okay with that.  During the night when I work, she is let out to run around the office.

So, I was reading, seeing if anyone had a cheap pen or something I could make a pen for her.  I am wondering if an exercise pen I saw, 3 feet tall, would be okay and do you think I could fold that up and put it in a suitcase?  I am going to be moving in with my boyfriend in Los Angeles which will be a 5 hour plane ride with Honey Bunny and my 3 cats.  I’m still trying to figure out the particulars of who to put in cargo and which one can stay with me.  I have 2 Persians, one a senior, and a dilute calico domestic shorthair plus Honey Bunny.

OH…I am getting off track.  Anywho,

so I was in the “Farm and Garden” section of our local Craig’s list and saw “Colorful fryer rabbits”  which makes me automatically go  I clicked it, wondering why anyone would care if they are colorful if they’re just going to fry them.  Again   It says “13-week old babies, $8 each or $5 each if you take all 5.  Any left after the weekend are going in the freezer.”

Oh WHY Did I click that????  Do you think they’re just saying it for effect?  Should I contact them and hope they only have like 1 and it’s a girl to go with Honey?

I hate that I clicked it.  Now it bothers me.

I know how you feel. I was in a pet store yesterday to buy hay, and for some stupid reason I was drawn to the section with pets for sale. And I so wanted to buy one of the bunnies there. I felt bad the entire day for not having helped that bunny to a better place. If it wasn’t because of my stressful ongoing bonding sessions, I would have brought him/her home with me.

If you are in fact looking for a new bunny, then well, do contact them and hear. It’s a weird ad though. Why would they say that all are going in the freezer after the weekend if they are selling them for food anyhow? If I was looking to buy food rabbits, I surely would prefer if they were dead and plucked and in a freezer. So, I guess the sellers are saying it to add effect.

I know how you feel, I saved Buttercup that way! I just don’t understand how anyone could raise bunnies for meat! Or do that to baby bunnies! It breaks all of our hearts, we know that bunnies make great pets, and have feelings! Poor bunnies! I would call to save at least one, if not all of them then try to find them good homes!

FYI…I am moving this to The Lounge.

I just want to add that we really discourage talk of “meat rabbits” on the forum.

I thought we weren’t allowed to talk about meat rabbits, in the way that sharing recipes, talk about breeding them or how to prepare them was off-limit…understandably of course! but not that we cannot talk about how to save them or get one as a pet?

Isn’t it a bit of a shame not to encourage a member who sees such an ad and considers contacting the seller in order to save one? I mean, they are still out there, whether we mention them or not So, I think we could help these creatures more by talking about it openly in a constructive manner (helping one) so that some members don’t think that this industry does not exist?

Just my 50 cent, and well, if it isn’t allowed at all, then surely, I won’t say a word about the unspeakable bunnies again. I’m not looking to break the rules at all. I love the forum too much to do that.

The thing is, this hits the line with the rules.  It’s discussing meat rabbits and that’s the rule–very general which leaves room for alot of gray area.  however, I understand Karla your feelings about it.   This kind of thing hurts.   Here are my feelings about this.

This is one of those situations that represents many. If people buy from these people selling rabbbits for food, even to save a bunny, then it also financially supports what they are doing and the sellers can continue to do this, putting more bunny lives at risk.  What can be found on craigslist and other sites is more than we can count.   The people and businesses that do this may not care what we do with the rabbit — they make the money and it just continues to support them even if someone is “saving” a rabbit.  So this situation is not something that I would want to be posted on a regular bases. (however I absolutely fully understand the reason and desire to save a bunny from this situation… it’s heartbreaking)

The only way to really stop this is from the core and it’s long long process. (it’s something that hasn’t happened overnight– part of a food source for a long while).  So I feel it would be better to reference other organizations that are working to discourage this at a larger scale. Those that are trying to change the minds of the people that buy the rabbits for food as well as  targeting the people that sell them for food.

For example SaveABunny has an “Activism” section on their home page, and HRS(rabbit.org) home page shows current events that include activism things as well, and other rescues will many times have things they are locally working on.  HSUS and SPCA will also have current activism issues that people can support. So I encourage that route.

It’s not that I want people to stick their head in the sand with many of the disturbing things that are going on, but  I would be very surprised if people were completely oblivious and sometimes we just need a place to come to get relief and celebrate the individual owner’s joy and challenges of having a bunny.  That’s the main goal of BB.  Plus, if more people learn how to properly house, care for and make them part of the family via this site and other educational sites, that too can have a positive change in how rabbits are viewed.

P.S: Though if someone was put in the situation and you wanted to save a bunny from this, I certainly understand and do not  judge the individual for  that!  I am just stating the larger picture as I see it.

I was just disturbed really that these are BABY bunnies and this person is talking about putting them IN a Freezer. To me, that don’t sound right. No matter if they are bred for meat purposes. I wouldn’t think a baby bunny would have that much meat on it. So therefore, it just seems these are cruel, backwards, “you’ve got a purty mouth” hillbillies. Makes me ashamed to be from here! : /

You can also check out what the animal protection laws are for your state, and/or get in contact with your local animal care and control and/or SPCA, or local rabbit rescue (IF you have one any where nearby) and ask them about this situation. Since it does sound odd, it might raise an eyebrow and they may be inclined to check it out just to see that animals are being treated properly while in the sellers care. (these people may not even legally be able to sell them, some places require permits). I don’t know what state you are from, but here is an example of some recent positive changes in Louisiana’s laws about animals http://la-spca.org/Page.aspx?pid=357. And you may be able to find the laws for where you live.

This kind of thing many times is liking chasing your own tail, but it might be worth a try at least —to shut that operation down.

                          Good point, BB.

And yes, it would be a way of contributing to meat rabbits, which you really shouldn’t if you as a general rule is against it. That is also why, I try never to look at the bunnies for sale at the pet store, as pets for sale at a store is wrong in my personal opinion. It’s just so hard once we see them as individuals to keep the ideological principle in mind, but for the greater good and future bunnies we really should.

                          Thanks

i understand both sides of the fence. i am however guilty of buying a “meat baby” for that was what Atticus was bred for and I was asked by the breeder how i was going to prepare him and i said buy getting him neutered and to keep my pet bunny company til the end of their days…in 10 plus years time and it seemed he had a hard time grasping that i was keeping them as pets and not breeding him. i did however only buy atticus casue as many of you know i have stated before i have wanted a flemish giant since forever and he was the only place i could find that had them…be it a cross but still half flemish.

but i do totally understand and it is sad why people wotire those things. same idea as a puppy mill! want to buy the pup to save it but in the end, how many have died for that pup to be saved? even though you are saving one life, you are still supporting the idea the breeder, not that its an appropriate title for them for they are not breeders, for manufactoring and i use that word for they are not raising them, they keep them in tiny kennels until bought. most in horrid condition and making money off of it reguardless of the future of the puppy.

I understand too! Buttercup wasn’t baught he was given to me! but it’s so hard to see those bunny’s who would all make great pets/buddies/babies to people like us who love them! I’d call & see what u can do! ( not in response to the add, but to your local humane society etc…)

Raising rabbits for meat doesn’t bother me. I can see why it would be upsetting to some people, but not everyone regards animals as pets or companions. I grew up in an area where families rear and slaughter their own livestock; I am fine with raising all sorts of animals for food as long as long as everything is done in a humane manner.

Just putting in my two cents. But I wanted to add, to the OP, that the situation you describe is exactly why I don’t allow myself to look at the animal section on Craigslist, LOL. That’s exactly how I ended up with my second hedgehog, Lily. She was in a bad situation and I spent $350 (the same amount I pay for rent… rofl) to bail her out of it. Not that I regret saving her one bit… but CL can certainly be a dangerous place for animal lovers like you and me.

I always look on rabbit rescue & there was a New Zealand that was rescued because they were raised for meat & living in inhumane environment! So call your humane society, they are the ones who can rescue & save them & if needed shut them down!

Reading this, I saw something that was a bit fishy. You are right, why would someone care if they were colorful if they just wanted to eat them? And, why would they say they are going in the freezer if they weren’t already dead. I am almost sure killing a bunny like that is against the law. Plus, why bother with selling babies? Maybe they are actually selling them as pets so that they can sucker in people who care about bunnies. And they really don’t care what happensto the babies, so to get more effect they posted that, and then they have TWO groups of people willing to buy them. Just a thought.
