I volunteer at my local humane society where they have 3 bunnies now.  I am happy to say they spay/neuter them before adopting, which I thought was great.  Anyways, with it being a shelter, there isn’t much in the way of free space.  There is a *big* bunny there, female, albino (white w/ red eyes) and she’s is huge and not in a good way.  In the way of small animal donations, they don’t get many in terms of fresh food.  They have pellets and hay.  I’d love to foster at least the big one, but with having Bo bonding with the cats, I don’t wanna risk them becoming depressed.

Soooooooo….any ideas as to what to do?

I’m not sure what you mean about Bo bonding with the cats or why that would be a factor. I don’t believe that rabbits truly bond with other species, altho they can learn to get along and “cohabitate”.

Are you looking to foster a rabbit, or adopt a second as a mate for Bo? If you are only looking to foster, the two rabbits would need to be kept in different areas of the house and not allowed access to each other at all. Even housed separately, rabbits can develop a *tentative* bond with each other and this could be detrimental to both if the foster was suddenly adopted and left.

It’s not uncommon for shelter rabbits to only get pellets, so if they’re getting hay too, they’re in much better shape than many rabbits across the country. Conditions are not ideal in a shelter due to time, space, and money constraints, but those rabbits are much better off there than on the streets.

Are you thinking that Bo would become depressed?

If you did foster her would you be able to put her in a separate area of the house from Bo?

What i was trying to say is since I have Bo, I don’t want to foster due to the attachment him and the other bun would get.  As to him bonding with the cat, @ least in opinon, they groom eachother, lay near eachother, chase eachother, so I don’t think it’s not impossible.

But yea, was just looking for suggestions as to how to help since I am not looking to foster (because of Bo) and can’ t adopt due to the fact I have a few animals of my own.

Would they allow you to bring fresh vegetables to feed the rabbits the days you volunteer?

Can you bring a pen and let them out to exercise while you are volunteering?

I would also suggest providing fresh veggies, but the issue with that is if a particular rabbit has a more sensitive digestive system, and for some reason you’re not able to bring veggies, that could cause more harm than good. They need a very, very consistent diet. I know with my mini rex, if there’s any change in her feeding schedule, she gets sick.

@ Sarita, good idea didn’t even think about a pen.

@Beka27, reallly? I their digestive systems are rather sensitive than other animals, but I didn’t realize they could get sick. But it does make sense, having greens one day and not get them again for many more days. And since I am not able to be their daily, then, that would be an issue.

                    Thank you all very much!

They might be more resilient. I’m just speaking from experience of having a very fickle eater. Not all rabbits are like that. It wouldn’t be so bad either if there was a schedule for other people to bring in greens too.

Maybe do something simple like Romaine which is also affordable. I think the rabbits would be happy to have some greens if they even know what they are. They probably don’t get any treats so the Romaine could be a treat.

I hope I’m not stating the obvious, but you could also help by finding her a good new home. I mean, if you asked around, or talked to vets or even pet stores that don’t sell rabbits, and ask them to contact the shelter (leave their card or just phone number) to adopt her. Maybe make a flyer with her picture to give the vets. So if anyone wants to adopt a big bunny and seems serious and responsible, you could make the suggestion of taking her. Sometimes just putting it out there allows the right home to find the right bunny, and she sounds like you’re her angel.

Haha… yes Pam. That too ;o)

They are actually very fortunate that they only have 3 bunnies. Do they ever hook up with rabbit specific rescues that have the resources to get their pics out there to rabbit lovers?

With regards to getting veggies, I often wondered if grocery stores or restaurants would donate things they would throw out anyways, like carrot tops. The other day I was at the grocery store and the produce clerk was peeling all the outer leaves off all the lettuces and throwing them in a big box. They looked perfectly fine but probably didn’t meet store standards. I thought how great it would be if stores could donate all that stuff to shelters. Sometimes when I buy carrots with tops (mostly for the tops ), people pull off the tops and leave them in the bin. I snatch em up! Free greens!

Sorry if this is a bit off topic. I just wanted to mention it somewhere!
