A friend of mine has a house rabbit called Noddle.  She is an unaltered female rabbit that is about 2 that goes everywhere with her mum.  She LOVES her harness and seeks it out and drags it around until you take her for a walk on it.  She is really the sweetest thing.  I have told her mum to get her desexed on a few occassions but her mum does not want to put her through the pain.  Well i get a call about an hour ago, Noodle had 5 babies………

Just wait huh?  I mean she has not been around any male rabbit that I know of, her owners have no male rabbits living in the house we really are stumped!  But either way they are there and Noddle seems to be ok about the whole thing.  We figure they where born while everyone was at school and work.  Funny thing was she did not nest anywhere just delivered them on the middle of the couch!

They moved the bubs to a washing basket near the couch and Noodle just moved on with them!  So now they have 6 rabbits.  After going over everything the only thing we can think of is that there must be a wild rabbit that got to Noddle through the cat door.  The cat uses the cat door but Noodle never has so either she did one day and got into the back yard and had a little trist of he got in.  But even then we have never seen wild rabbits around my friend house.  It’s really strange.  She is going to call the rabbit vet tomorrow and discuss what to do and yes she is finally going to have Noodle desexed!

        Crafty buggers these rabbits are!

Your mystery brighten my morning! It’s probably an unsolved mystery! How are the baby and Noodle doing? Would love to hear more update.

It would be hard to mate a wild rabbit with a domestic one. A cotton tails genes are not the same as a domestic. Unless noodle lives in Europe those are very close to domestic breeds…

Maybe Noodle was bred by a feral domestic in the yard.

My mouth is agape. I shouldn’t be surprised though as rabbits will just breed no matter what. It’s weird she didn’t nest. I had a brief thought that someone brought there own accidental litter over and left them with Noodle. lol !

Can you friend think back 1 month to their movements? Did they have a vet visit or was Noodle boarded for any reason?? I guess the cat door is the most realistic possibility.

@Spidey, AV is in Australia. Our wild rabbits are the European breed. So I guess it could have been wild or feral.

what a mystery. rabbits sure do know how to get themselves into – ahem – trouble.

any chance of seeing pics of noodle and her surprise litter?

Thanks for the laugh guys, I will let her know it may be the cat (who is male but is desexed). The only thing we can think of is that one of her kids said that when they where playing in the park they had Noodle on her extend lead attached to bench, they remember seeing what looked like a white rabbit near the bushes and when they saw him they went and got Noodle but he could have already been there and done the deed and was hopping away. So best bet is that he was a domesticated rabbit that had been “Set Free” Noodle seems to have taken it all in her stride hoping in and out of the laundry basket and all bubs had full tummies when the family got up today. I am going to ask her for a picture to put up by my bet is on the wild rabbit in the park.

As if the incredibly high cancer risk wasn’t enough… this is just one more reason to spay and neuter even your SINGLE rabbits.

I hope this fiasco will educate her about the importance of altering… except now instead of having to alter one, she has six that need to get done.

And that’s assuming each spay/neuter is at the low end of $200, and this doesn’t take into account the initial vet visit, any pain meds, etc…

I think a more realistic estimate would be an average of $300 per rabbit… at $1800.

If all the babies are female… forget about it…

Hi guys, I rang my friend all are fine, one was looking a bit weak (the runt of the litter) and she rushed the lot in the laundry basket to the vet… vets verdit he is the runt of the litter! She is going to get mum spayed as soon as the vet gives her the ok and is also thinking of keeping the lot and getting them all spayed…. 1 rabbit to 6 that is going to be intresting. She has changed the mums feed as the vet said she was a little on the light side but other then that they are fine. I have not been around to see them so I don’t have any pictures yet sorry.

My friend is blaming herself saying that if she had just kept her bunny inside then none of this would have happened no babies no illness no death but noodle loves going for walks and granted she should have had her desexed but all she can do now is live and learn and move forward I hope.

I know she gets her vaccinations and if it was Mix then there would not be much hope so must be something else which is sad.

Mom’s can pass a lot of illnesses onto their babies, i have 2 rabbits that are left from a litter of 7 who all died early in life b/c of an illness they caught from their mother when they were still in the womb, it affected their livers and looked like cancer when the necroscopies were done, but still very odd even to the Vets.
This is probably way off, as i don’t know enough about the subject (And honestly I’m hung over lol) but i know it is common in Guinea pigs to have both sexual organs. The information i do not know about is whether both organs work and the animal can impregnate itself … but it’s a thought. Since wild rabbits cannot breed and make babies with our domestics (in America), and it wasn’t mentioned if she had ever seen another domestic rabbit hanging around her place.
