Like I said, Has anyone ever had an upper endoscopy? I am scheduled to have one next wednesday (7th) and I am getting very nervous. I just worry about having to swallow the tube (eww!). I don’t know what to expect. I have been looking up some info about it but then that freaks me out! Any advice is much appreciated!

i’ve had one! it was no big deal. i was nervous at first too, but it was really simple. they just take you back to a prep room and you get in a little gown and then they wheel you back, administer the sedative via I.V. and then you go night night. you don’t swallow the tube while you’re awake. they put it down there after you’re knocked out otherwise you’d choke on it.

then you wake up, feel totally loopy, babble about silly things, don’t remember anything the doctor tells you, he’ll hand you some cool photos and hopefully tell you what’s wrong. and then you go home and the next day your throat will feel a little sore. that’s about it!

            good luck!

may i ask what’s wrong? i’ve had TONS of stomach troubles, so i’m curious as to why you’re having the endo.

Had one a few years ago not really a big deal the only thing I remember was the sound of my heartbeat speeding up every time a doctor or nurse would come in and them putting some kind of contraption in my mouth to keep it open. Then waking up.

I have been having GI issues since last year. It lasted about 3 months then disappeared, and came back this year and got progressively worse. I would have vomiting, severe nausea, diarrhea, etc. I was actually just in the hospital about a week ago for four days because I could not eat or drink for 5-6 days, I couldn’t keep anything down. I have had a ct scan, iv contrast, and ultrasound done. I finally got a referral to a GI doc who wanted to do the scope to take some biopsies and hopefully see something. Everything test that I have had has come back normal. If the scope doesn’t show anything I will have a stomach emptying test done. They put me on some acid reflux medications, nausea meds, and a couple other pills and I have been better since I was released from the hospital. Hopefully it stays that way! Thanks for easing my mind!

goodness mrmac, you are having a hard time. I’ve had several, but I have such a sensitive gag reflex they always put me out for it. Doesn’t hurt to ask, or maybe just twilight gas to make you not care what the heck they’re doing. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Thank you! I hope the scope will show SOMETHING! Anything! With all the vomiting I have had my gag reflex is what I am worried about. It is on wednesday, it is finally getting close!

It can show things that hide from the barium swallow and other procedures. I have some sort of tumour that grows in my esophegus (sp) that was causing me to choke trying to eat and the doctor thought I was crazy because nothing showed up on any test. Then just to humor me he did the scope thing and found it, cut it back and apologized profusely afterwards. Every few years it grows back enough to have to do it again and biopsy it but now it’s not a fight to get him to do it.

Let us know how it goes!

Awww. I’m sorry you’re having problems and your doc isnt able to figure it out… That’s so frustrating isn’t it?! I’ve been there, not with tummy troubles though. I’m all better now though, so I’m sure your doc will be able to help you too!!! Tummy troubles are the worst though, I feel for you

Onec they released me from the hospital all my tummy troubles disappeared, just like last year. When I went home yesterday, after the procedure I was completely furious at everything! Don’t know why just super angry. Hubby said I yelled at him, I yelled at my mother when I called her, just mad! I think some of it had to do with the fact that they saw nothing. He took some biopsies to check for inflamation or infection. I have to call to get the results in a week. Aparently I was awake the whole car ride home, but I do not remember anything. I supposedly got dressed myself, got in the car with hubby, he drove home…all of this I have NO clue about! All I remember is pulling into the parking spot in our complex and coming inside and falling asleep. I do not remember ANYTHING! Who knows what the next step will be…
