I had mentioned in another thread that I wanted a "sideways E" xpen insert to add vertical space to my pen. Since I don't do NIC condos, we've been limited in terms of shelving options that are large enough (and indestructible!) for two bunnies.
It's DONE!!! My husband was sweet enough to build it for our little fur babies, and they love it!!!
We expanded upon the "sideways E" concept and made one half a hidey house with 2 doorways. The other half is open (and fits the large Binkybunny pet bed perfectly, I might add.)
Dimensions are 3'9" long, 18" deep, 13" tall. It's fits exactly into one end of the pen.
We're thinking instead of peel 'n' stick tiles, which were my original thought for the top, we're going to get some of the inexpenive rag rugs that can be thrown in the wash for the shelf. Still not totally sure. But in the meantime, they are really enjoying exploring their new space!
Pictures explain better than I can... so here it is:

And in the pen:

Do you like it?

Woah! That's wonderful! I may have to steal your idea! Although I'm sure it won't turn out anywhere near as good! Ha!
It looks great, really!
May I ask what kind of wood you used? Not the type of wood (oak, poplar, ect) but.. like... was it one long, thin piece? |

My husband does great work!!! Wasn't really difficult to make. It's pretty basic (he says it only took 15 minutes to make). With some tools and wood and a little bit of time... it's easy enough! I wanted it taller, but Maxie doesn't jump as high as Meadow does, so this way they both feel comfortable jumping onto the platform. |

I'm so envious... can I trade you anything for it? And you made it seem as if it were more likely for your son to grow up and build it than for your husband to get it done. Or did I say that at one time?

I like it! I also might have to steal the idea. Once I get Felix for good (cross your fingers!) and bond him to Mae this would be ideal. Felix is crazy and jumps like a maniac. Mae doesnt, but she would love love love the hidey box. She spends most of her time in her cardboard one now. Mine wont be as pretty though, yours looks awesome! |

I didn't really think out cleaning. Hahahaha... It's HEAVY. It doesn't look that big in the pics, but it's large and it fits SNUGLY into the end of the pen, so there's not a lot of wiggle room for moving it around. When I clean, I typically pull everything out of the pen and vacuum inside. And then once every couple weeks, I drag the xpen off the rug and vacuum out all the corners. It's going to take some getting used to lifting this big structure. |

The xpen is made from two 36" tall Midwest xpens... The back of the pen overlaps by four grids, so I am actually only using 12 of the 16 available grids. This makes the space 4x8 feet. And for two almost completely free range bunnies, it's plenty big. They're only confined when we're away for a long time or at night, altho they do choose to hang out in their pen a lot during their naptimes. |

I feel even more envious now seeing the shelf in use. I had a bunk bed as a child that was made of knotty pine, and the pictures of Meadow on her new shelf remind me of that bed. |

I'm guessing however Petzy, you probably had fewer chewed up willow sticks in your bunk bed. Just a guess.... lol! |

I'm loving the shelf. Their pen was just... missing something before. I guess I've always had a little bit of "shelf envy" for the people who could do NIC condos (and do them well!) I've never had luck with NICs, besides for bunny-proofing. I am quite pleased with how this has turned out. They've always had their share of boxes and small hidey houses and tents (and the maze of course!), but this is just perfect. |

I like its size. I made a hidey house in the beginning just for Lint but it was too small. It was a waste of time. |

Yeah... Mike has made two other houses, one for Mead and then another when we got Max, but they were flawed. We didn't realize there should be two openings, so they rarely went inside. Meadow spent more time on top of her house than inside. Max rarely went inside OR on top... And both were very small. The other thing I like about it (that I required) is that it can be run thru... Max will routinely include the pen as part of his running space. He chases thru the living room, up the hall, into the pen, around the pen, and back out again towards the living room. So the fact that both chambers open up to each other was important. |

Two openings! Of course, so there is always an escape. Mental note made. |
