I think I may have given chacha a blad spot.. or something, on accident

I noticed recently that a small sized crescent moon shaped bald spot on her back.. well, it isn’t skin that you can see, but WHITE fur!!

She is a Black Otter Dwarf.. her belly is white.. but I didn’t imagine to see any on her back. I am so confused right now.

Anyways, I run my hand over the spot to pet her, and it is a little lighter feeling…

I put her on the bathroom counter and I ran my fingers through her fur, and her fur is black, but if I blow on it or run my fingers through it, it is white

Is this just an accident of slave grooming too much? Is this common?

EDIT: Or perphaps she is shedding her baby coat.. I hear bunnies lose their baby coat..

I finally got a picture of it.

Relax. It looks like shedding. Both mine are shedding now too. The layer of fur above that area has likely shed out and what you can see is the base of the fur layer underneath. I’ll have to look up if black otters have that type fur (mostly black and white at the base. You may even see the base fur of her white belly fur is darker. Jerseys orange colour is white at base. Rumball is agouti and his fur is multi coloured and banded so it always creates interesting patterns as fur shed out. I got to plucking loose fur on one check the other night and I regret it. He enjoyed it but now he’s left looking like he has a deep cleft along his cheek! Betterr than him ingesting the fur I guess.

So if fur is coming away really easy, don’t hesitate to help get rid of it. It will leave Chacha looking a bit odd for a while but it will all grow back in. The older hair can feel coarse and the new fur and undercoat feels real soft. That’s the difference in textures you’re probably noticing. Don’t worry, I’m still mystified by bunny fur and how often it changes!

Edit to add: Black Otter, solid top colour with lighter undercolour closer to the skin. White underside from chin, belly and  tail, with darker colour at base (undercolour).  Tan or orange at junction from top body colour and underside, inside ears, around nose & eyes. And on the neck??I think.

If chacha has white on her belly she can potentially have white fur elsewhere as she gets older.
Bunnies can shed out colors and change over the years, even after baby fur is gone and they have new, adult coats.

I got Spockie as a light gray and white bunny. By the time he was 6 we were all staring at him saying “I could have sworn he was a gray bunny. He looks more black now.” It is strange to see if you don’t know that happens.

I freaked out when i had my first bun shed this way. When my Rex did he looked like he had a saddle on. Ani always looks terrible when she sheds, here a pic of it … she had a large indent int eh lower back there.

My Bo with his ‘saddle’ … this is always teh embarassing time of the year where I don’t want people to see my bunnies they look so terrible, hair coming out everywhere LOL

Phew!! I am so glad I wasn’t the only one freaking out at one time!!

Perhaps it is genetics with coloring..

I must groom her tonight when I get home.. saw some hair coming off when I was petting her last night!!
                Thank you all

My bun Nibbles is shedding so bad right now that I was beginning to think there was something wrong with him. I feel much better after reading this.
