A very nice elderly woman in East Oakland has 10 stray rabbits running loose in her backyard (and rats are eating the babies).  I'm building up a crew of experienced rabbit rescue folk to try to catch and humane trap the rabbits on Sunday.  But we really need fosters!  Two of the rabbits are injured, and we have a guaranteed rescue spot for the injured rabbits with Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary, however, we need fosters for the other 8 healthy bunnies.  There are 3 one-month old bunnies (whose mom is no longer around), and the rest are between 2 and 6 months.  Ever wanted to have the chance to raise-up baby bunnies, but didn't want to support breeding, this is your chance!  The babies are ADORABLE.

We can provide loaner cages with a pair or trio of bunnies (so we only need to find 3 or 4 fosters - anyone?  please?), and hay and pellets to get you started, organized adoption events to show the rabbits at, and spay/neuter when they are old enough.

Please email me at fosterbun@gmail.com if you can foster, or want more information!  What better way to celebrate Father's Day than by fostering a bunny?  (Oh, okay, you can't blame me for trying...hehe).

Thanks!

-Anne

Anne, I'm not certain how I missed this or I would have pinned it - can you give us an update?

Yep - here's the update!

When we went back 6 days later to do the rescue, it went from 10 rabbits in the backyard to only 6. We found the body of one of the babies. They were being heavily predated on by rats, according to the neighbors, and all the surrounding yards had dogs, so there was no place for them to go. The other rabbits that were missing were 2 other babies and the injured rabbit, so sadly, we don't think they are alive. We had a great team of experienced rabbit rescue folks, and were able to catch all 6 teenage rabbits in about a half-hour. The rabbits are currently in pairs - a female pair is at Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary, and a female pair is in foster, and a male pair is in another foster - the male pair will be visiting me for a week, starting tonight, while their foster is away (you can see one of the males from this pair in the foreground of the photo above - gold & white bunny).

They are very shy, never having had human contact before - they will need rabbit-savvy adopters who can help them come out of their shells, and can tame them into the wonderful house rabbits I know they will be! We are getting them fixed & then they will get posted up on Petfinder - I'll keep you posted on that!
