I would like to know how to tell if your bunny is sick. because i always seem to think they are sick. I gave lulu her veggies/pellets last night and she hasn’t eaten them yet, and it is almost 6:00 pm here! she is the kind of bunny who is a pig and eats her veggies within 3-4 hours. HELP !  she has only eaten a few peices of lettuce and a tiney bit of pellets. is that normal for them to be pigs one day and act like they hate food the next?

Is she being active at all? Does she seem to be loafing around more than usual? Is she eating hay and pooping at all?

And is it warm where you are?

If she hasn’t eaten much in 24 hours and it’s obviously not normal for her, it’s something you’ll want the vet to check out. If she’s not pooping much or it’s odd looking or something, it’s definitely serious. Anything that’s not normal for her is something paying close attention to.

I’m sure you are already aware, but gi stasis happens when the gut stops moving (i.e. no poop because they aren’t eating, the gut slows down and causes problems) and this is a very serious thing for bunnies.

I hope she is not sick, but let us know how she’s doing now and you’ll probably need to take her to the vet if it doesn’t improve very soon. (not sure what time zone we’re talking…)

Oh and the stasis isn’t the actual cause, it’s secondary to whatever else caused her to stop eating. So if she’s goes into stasis it could be from a number of things. One could be stress (heat-related, shedding-related..both happened to my bun), or pain from somewhere (ie teeth) or some type of infection. So the fact that she’s not eating is the effect of how she’s feeling which leads to stasis…

Maybe I’m not telling you anything new, but I just wanted to add that. And like I said, don’t delay if she’s not improving, and even if she seems to be, she might not…bunnies are notorious for disguising pain.

Like i mentioned i need to know how to know when it is serious i can’t just keep worrying every time she doesn’t eat. how do i tell?

I know in another thread you said that you gave her blackberry leaves.. was that the first time you’ve done that? If so… she may not agree with the leaves, which can upset her tummy.

I’d avoid the blackberry leaves, or maybe try feeding one little leaf next time, to see how she reacts. Gotta start them off slowly

Sometimes they avoid strong tasting veggies, so you could try a different flavored lettuce, like green leaf, which is very mild. Or parsley, or a sprig of mint, which will taste very different as well. But if she stops eating totally, watch for any irregular poos and if it’s not normal see the vet.

she is fine now… i think she got a little sick from the black berry leaf or something.

I haven’t seem blackberry leaves in years, but aren’t they a little more coarse than most other plants? Plus they have small spines on the undersides, don’t they?
I mean, I’ve heard of bunnies eating nettles before, but I can’t imagine something prickly would sit well.
Glad to hear your bun is better. I know what you mean though, I obsess over anything that seems unusual in my own bunnies…it can’t hurt to be vigilant. *nods*
