I’m only partly vegetarian – I eat fish and eggs. But only if it is organic and free-range.

Instead of meat, I eat something called quorn. It is a fungus-thing that is made into looking like meat, so it means I can serve lasagne, chill con carne et.c to guests, and they never know they don’t get their meat…and I’m spared for all the stupid comments.

I’m a veggie! I don’t eat meat, eggs, cheese or gelatin. I need to give up milk and then I will be a full fledged vegan!

I did this thread a couple of years back and was surprised at how many of us eat like rabbits

I always wonder how vegans live. I mean, you cannot buy bread or cakes – that’s what really wouldn’t work for me.

I just recently found out that there is gelatin in chewing gum as well, so it is so difficult to avoid animal products in food.

LPT, you can drink rice milk. It actually tastes much better than cow’s milk, I think.

well after seeing food inc which was a HUGE eye opener for me…..I started to eat a bit differently. Although i am not a vegetarian or vegan I have started to eat more like that. I still eat chicken and beef but not so often anymore. I love fish and continue to eat fish. I eat all organic now. I feel so better eating so healthy now. I want my kids to grow up eating healthy so my house is an all organic house and I feel great about it!

My husband and I are wanting to become vegetarian! Sadly we both like Chicken (free range/organic)…a lot! Do any of you vegetarians/vegans have a good substitute? Thanks

OH! And I should note that we HATE fish….sorry to you fish eaters out there! It’s just that one we hate the taste (doesn’t matter how it’s cooked) and because of Over fishing and Mercury. Also, Fish are animals too….

So, for those who have a good substitue, please don’t mention any fish products….Thanks!

HatterBunny: yes, quorn. They make “chicken fillets” as well. They make all kinds of “meat products”, which is great, because that has made it so much easier to make my boyfriend into a non-meat eater as well.

I was a vegetarian for many years and was a vegan for about a year… but it was very difficult living in a house with other people who weren’t vegan and having to cook separate meals for everyone. I don’t eat much beef, pork, or chicken, but I do really enjoy fish. I am japanese and it was so hard for me to give up sashimi and seafood dishes. I make a conscious effort to eat free run eggs and organic soy milk… maybe one day I will be able to do vegan again.

That’s a shame. They only just entered the american market in 2006, so I guess it takes a while before they are available everywhere.

Here, you can only find them in certain supermarket branches too. And not the whole product line.

                                      EDIT: oh, good, Pixiemom!

I’m vegan! My S.O. is vegetarian. We cook a lot. I love to bake and my SO loves to eat baked goods. We also just got a bread maker which is amazing. I make my own seitan too which is a good substitute. We eat a ton a veggies and for protein beans, nuts, tofu, seitan. We get soymilk or orange juice with added calcium and use nutritional yeast (high in b vitamins) in many recipes, so I don’t take any supplements. I’ve been vegan for 3 1/2 years and vegetarian for 13 years.

Here are some good websites to check out recipes:
                                        http://www.veganyumyum.com
                                        http://www.theppk.com
                                        http://www.veganchef.com

I’ve never tried quorn because they put eggs in it!  I hate it when they make veggie burgers with eggs/milk.  I usually only eat processed food like that when I eat out (I just have to say: no cheese, no mayo).  I try to make everything from basic ingredients (mm.. veggie burgers with lentils/peas!).

That is what I never understand about people who call them selves vegies but still eat fish. Fish is meat, it was a living thing.

Spidey – yeah, my neice is a vegetarian but eats fish all the time. I asked her why she thinks it’s ok to eat fish, but not chicken, beef, etc. She said it’s because it’s not a land animal and doesn’t care for it’s young!!

I just responded that many fish do care for their young! She didn’t know what to say. Oh well, to each their own…My husband and I just don’t believe in the over fishing, and the fact that Fish is not as “healthy” as it used to be due to Mercury.

Hehe, we have had that discussion at home as well about fish. My boyfriend keeps telling me that fishes cannot feel pain, but I’m not so sure. At least, I don’t like seeing them struggle to breathe, when they are pulled out of the water. The are actually changing the fishing procedure here, as the minister responsible for it, said that we have to give the fish the benefit of the doubt, as we still don’t know if they feel pain or not. I like that

I eat fish once in a while…because at least they have lived a life in the ocean in freedom and under natural conditions (and the fish are not allowed to be sold if they belong to those groups that are overfished). I have actually been convinced a while back that it is okay to eat meat, if a hunter kills the animal under fair conditions – you know, a wild animal in the woods and only one hunter (hunting for food and not for fun).

If I fish couldn’t feel pain then there would be no fish left. Pain and feeling are the reasons we know to and not to do something, IE Hot, sharp, etc…

People who eat fish and chicken and call themselves Veggies suffer from what I call ‘Eye brow syndrome’

Everyone knows that eyebrows convey emotion and to an extent cuteness. Chickens and fish do not have them and just have a blank look on their face making it easier to justify that they are not cute or feel pain LOL

I had a freiend who called her self a vegatarian but she ate ground beef … uumm kay.

I am not a vegitarian, and when i was (when I was younger) I was very unhealthy b/c I did not eat properly (I am very lazy). I love food, i will not eat ‘pets’, and honestly i eat very little meat, but since the hubby is a farm raised meat an potatos kinda guy it’s hard to cut it out completely. Though I am introducing him to more and more authenic cooking, including much vegitarian indian dishes, and I have talked to him about me becoming a vegitarian. I had to do a health diet 2x before and my biggest hurdle was him not being on it
I’ve stoped drinking cows milk mostly (well i put it in my coffee/tea i can’t do that powder whitner AKA drywall dust, now THATS not natural) and i LOVE organic vanilla soy milk, it’s like a milkshake. Sometimes I treat myself to the chocolate stuff hehehe.

I disagree to people who feed a vegitarian only diet to their dogs/cats, that just seems way to unnatural to me. BUT my diabetic dog needs a high fibre low fat diet… so we will include vegitarian formulas for that reason. I don’t judge people if they want to eat meat or not, BUT i do have opinions on how the animals are killed etc. Like Karla mentioned abut hunting, if you hunt and do it to feed your family, and don’t use fancy gadgets to trick the animals to come to you, I don’t have a problem with that.

I think it’s great that many of you are able to stick to a animal free diet.

I’m in progress to become vegan but it isn’t easy to be college student to find right food on campus.

Do any of you vegetarians/vegans have a good substitute? Thanks

It is great, we get a bunch of veggies each week and it changes throughout the summer, all locally grown. I also just got in the garden, with lots of greens this year, mmm.

Why is that? Probably that you know that rabbits have good personalities or something like that?

I do believe that eating a lot of meat every day leads to cancer as so much research points to that. But so do so many other things. As long as people choose free-range, organic animal products then no problem to me. I still have big arguments with my parents who support lots of animal rights groups and then buy the cheap meat, where the cows have never been outside the stable and live under poor conditions. I have been to plenty of those types of farms, and it is not very nice. I lived next to a pig farm for a few years, and the sound of the pigs screaming when they were put on the truck to the slaughter was just so horrible!! I will never quite understand my parents’ priority, but I cannot change the world. I have changed my boyfriend (but only by telling him about the consequenses of eating meat filled with antibiotics), and I will influence my children…that is my small contribution.

I have a friend who is a hunter (not for fun), and I sometimes buy meat off him to give to my parents so they don’t eat the the meat from industrial farm animals.

And I try to spread the word about Quorn as much as I can by serving it to guests and telling them it is low-fat (haha, that always work) and not meat. People are always surprised cause they couldn’t tell.

We buy the “minced meat” and the filled “schnitzel” – the schnitzel is so yummy!

It’s too dry, but maybe it is just the chef that’s the problem

I like those two products because the outside is crispy and not soggy once it’s cooked and boy they taste so good too.

once i went to a friend’s pig roast. i had eaten plenty of pork growing up but when i saw the entire whole pig on a spit roasting i screamed and turned away. embarassing behavior on a pig farm. lol. i couldn’t eat pork that day.

and i don’t cook meat. i live on my own and so i’m only responsible for feeding myself (except for guests & family dinners) and i hate touching raw meat of any kind. i usually buy a roasted chicken once a week so i don’t have to cook it myself and touch it raw.

reading this thread i feel newly inspired to try new vegitarian recipes. i think if i added more vegitarian / vegan meals slowly it mat be easier to transition.

ps… thanks for the links all

So I fell off the wagon… but now that I’m done with dorm-life I WILL get back on!!!

It’s great for cheap, easy meals and snacks. I bought it even though I’m way past college

I’m a veggie (no meat at all-for *16* years   , but eggs occaisionally-free range, and dairy) I’ve been styling on vegan for a long time and I need to be able to cook to be able to do it. So currently I’m working really hard on cooking-I’ve mastered some vegan cornbread…and that’s about all that’s suceeded so far. But I’m working on it-both adaptations of real recipes to vegan ones, and just plain cooking.

I don’t know where I went wrong-greek and british in my blood, my brother is a red seal chef running 200$/plate restaurant and I can hardly make a sandwhich lol I’ll get there though-genes or no genes-I will learn to cook and then I’ll ditch the dairy (eggs no loss lol)
