I got a dog!!!! You may remember my post about wanting a dog and then deciding the time wasn’t right becasue of the extra responsibility load… well, I talked it over with my parents, and have decided that I can indeed handle a dog.

So this is the guy I got from the shelter!  I got him a week and a half ago actually, but haven’t posted anything until now since we were initially in a sort of trial period in case things didn’t work out.  But he’s here to stay now, and he’s stolen my heart!

(and yes, those are rubber bands tied around his tags… they’re too noisy sometimes!  )

        Ok a little about him….

He is such a sweetheart, about a year old, and only 20 lbs.  I’m working with him on basic obedience, but he can already walk nicely on a leash, “sit” and “down” “stay” and “come”.  Since I live in an apartment building, I’ve also taught him to sit and wait at doors until I open them, then I step through and call him through – that way he won’t ever barrel through the door and knock someone over on the other side.  I’ve been on the receiving end of that, and even though I love dogs and even if they’re small, it’s never fun to get bowled over by an out of control dog!

He’s completely housebroken and crate trained.  He doesn’t bark when people come to the door, and even when I’m gone he doesn’t react or bark when people walk down the hallway outside my apartment.

He was picked up as a stray, but the shelter was able to track down his old family.  They said that they knew he was lost, but he was too expensive to keep, so they weren’t going to come get him.  I suspect that he was abused in his former home, or he had some rough nights on the street or was completely overwhelmed by the noisy and stressful shelter environment becasue when I got him he was a bit timid and head shy.  And certain quick movements of my hand or foot startled him and made him cower.  He’s since gotten over that (and I’ve only had him less than 2 weeks!) and is very friendly and just like any other dog now!

I have big plans for this little man.  He easily adjusts his energy level to mine, so when I’m up and wanting to play, he’ll get worked up and excited, but when I sit down to study, he’ll just go lay down on his bed or at my feet and chill out.  He’s interested in people, but doesn’t get overly excited, and he’s a card carrying member of the Snuggles and Kisses Brigade!  And given his small size, he’s not intimidating, so I think he has a future as a therapy dog!  I’m going to work with him this summer and get him certified through Delta or something and then start taking him to nursing homes or hospitals around town.  I’ve been dying to do this with an animal for the longest time.  I think it’s so important to be community minded and give back in ways that you are able.  Goodness knows, if I was sick in the hospital or in a nursing home, I’d love for someone to come chat with me and bring something furry I can love on!  And while Leroy is soft and his fur just begs to be touched, and Jeannie is tiny and loveable – they’re a bit too sensitive and ornery to be taken places and held for long periods of time.

As for now having a dog-bunny household… things are working out beautifully!  I have a routine down and everyone gets their daily share of “mommy time” :-D  The dog is very calm around the bunnies.  Interested but not overly so.  I’m taking things verrrrryyyy slowly.  And actually, I quarintined the dog from the bunnies when I found out he had worms and a touch of kennel cough!  According to the buns’ vet, they can’t get kennel cough from the dog, so that’s a good thing.  The only way they (or I) could get the tapeworms is if we ate his poop – and since I DEFINITELY don’t do that and since the dog hasn’t ever pooped in the house and the bunnies don’t go outside, we’re good there too.  He’s now utd on shots and everything and got his dewormer meds from the vet on Friday, so he’s probably clean anyway.

When dog was at the shelter, after I picked him, I brought the bunnies in to meet him.  Neither cared one bit about him.  Both just sat there and munched their hay.  Dog was interested but didn’t strain towards them or try to grab one or anything – definitely a better candidate for this than say my parent’s lab!   At home I’ve done one quick intro session with Leroy and dog so far.  (I figured I’d do one bun and then introduce the other so I don’t overwhelm Dog, and since Leroy seemed to be a bit braver, he gets to be first).  Leroy was MOST interested in him – sniffing all around and checking things out – but not fearful.  Dog was in his crate, just to make sure nothing happened the first time out, but he paid more attention to me than to Leroy!  You can see in these pictures, he’s looking at the camera/me rather than even bothering with the bunny.

I’m pretty sure that his focus on me over Leroy is due to my intensive training with him over the past few days and his bond with me.

Ok sorry for such an excruciatingly long post.  I’m just excited about him!   But here’s the main reason I posted… Dog needs a name!!!!

I have a couple names in mind, but nothing so far that’s really “clicked”.  Since you all were wonderful and helped me pick Jeannie’s name, I figured I’d ask for your suggestions!

                  I 2nd Leroy
A simple, yet unique name seems right.
I’m not saying that moe, joe, or leroy is unique! Haha!
I think Ca- is good for him. It suits him.

                  Carlos, Carlton, Carson…. a person name….
Calvin, yes. He is definitely a Calvin.

His shape looks like my little mongrel, Roger. He’s a mix of all things hyper!

Otis and you can call him Ottie for short. Like Otis on Milo and Otis and Ottie from Garfield.

                              happy belated birthday Barbie.
–yes, you can handle this dog. H is very nice. Congrats! My initial opinion on this matter — you getting a dog now — was influenced by my two very large dogs who are difficult to take along due to size and hard (expensive) to board, again, due to size. A 20 lbs-doggie, already crate-trained and approved by your parents, you can definitely handle..

Funny, someone else suggested Max and Jasper to me too!

Hehe, Lintini, werent you thinking about Smudge for your new bun?

Ok, so far I like Jasper, Calvin (though it might have to Kalvin, since I know a Calvin… ) Otie (like from Garfield! though I think it’s spelled Odie…), and Max (short for Maximilian, of course, lol – and MB, don’t hate!).

The names I was toying with, in no particular order, are: Benji (short for Benjamin), Toby, Keegan, Nick (that was his shelter name and what I’ve been calling him ), and Wolfgang (I’d call him Wolfie most likely).

Petzy, thanks! He’s very easy to handle, and a good size for my lifestyle. And I already have friends banging on my door, offering to dog sit!

Not that you asked- but if I had to guess I would think he is a Jack Russel (now called a Parsons Terrier) and Chihuahua mix.  Any idea what kind he is/  Just curious.

                                      hmm….names

Kodak, Sherlock, Shakespeare, Jynx, Starbuck, Dyson (if he likes to eat rabbit poo), Kirby (that is my parrots name)

Katnip interesting. I’ve also heard chihuahua mix, I think it’s something about the shape of his head. He was just labled as a “mix” at the shelter, but I know that’s just a catch-all term Thing is, he acts nothing like a terrier, which is part of the reason I picked him.

There’s a huge political mess right now with the county shelter, and I am VERY displeased with the way our commissioners have been spending the money – time for some new blood in office! Anyway, I’m not going to get into that… lol. But while that’s being sorted out, animals sit in itty bitty cages and suffer. That being said, the shelter staff and volunteers really impressed me. They keep everything very clean and know most of the dogs’ personalities so were able to help me sort out some of the other dogs I was interested in, but they didn’t think he had any terrier in him, at least based on his personality.

So while he is about that size, he’s leggier, has a longer and thinner tail than a JRT and doesn’t have that whole hyperactive, energizer bunny thing going on! Other people have mentioned feist (which is basically a cur that’s very popular in the Southern US) or basenji. I’m leaning towards basenji mix. He doesnt have the curled tail like basenjis do, and there are some slight differences in head/body shape, but his vocalizations (or lack thereof) remind me of a basenji. He’s typically very quiet, but when he does make noise, it’s kind of a whining howl, sometimes ending in one short bark. Sounds very similar to the typical basenji “baroo”

I know it’s not so much the breed but the individual dog and his level of training that makes the difference when living harmoniously with bunnies, but still, I would hate to find out that he’s some sort of hunting dog or sighthound! So while I’m curious about what breed he is, I think I’ll hold off on any of those DNA tests until after I’ve gotten the bunnies and dog to a point where they can hang out in the same room (under supervision only!)

Speaking of, how effective are those DNA tests, do you know? They’re pretty expensive, so I wouldnt want to spend $ on one unless I know it’s not a bogus scam and that I’m not going to get something back telling me he’s a GSD/Komondor/Dogue de Bordeaux mix or something silly and obviously wrong like that!

Names? My daughter instantly thought of the Incredible Journey dogs, Luath (LOO-Ah) and Bodger…or maybe even the contemporary version, Chance.
Personally, I think his name should be Baroo! ^_^
Looks like both you and I have new dogs, Barbie…since Jenna seems to have glommed to me instead of my daughter.

I’m still trying to get an idea on his size…is Leroy a standard Rex or a mini?

Ah, then the name Benji is a good fit. When I saw his pic earlier today I thought he needed a “B” name or B sound i.e. Barnaby, Kirby etc. Now that you said his current name is Nick I’m thinking something rhyming or ending in that sound.

But I’m liking Benji and Baroo.  You’ve done great with him in such a short time. He appears to know his master.  He’s sweet!

As far as Leroy’s size, I haven’t been able to determine if he’s a mini or a rex… he’s somewhere in between 5 and 6 lbs (leaning towards 6 at this point… he’s gotten a bit pleasantly plump despite my efforts to put him on a diet!). I’m 5’2″ and the dog’s back doesn’t even come up to my knee!

How about the name “Keeper”-  because it looks as though he is a keeper even though his previous owners did not think so.

I would not base any bunny/dog decisions based on breed- it is more important the dogs personality and it looks as though he is a mix- so it is hard to predict personality/genetic traits off of that.

I had also thought Basenji with the shape of the head- but could not gauge leg length well from photos.  We have some Basenji’s that come to our clinic and my dogs have played with them at the dog park- and my Aussie’s can’t catch them or keep up with them.  My dogs will be flopped out panting from a good chase game- and the Basenjis are still ready to keep playing.

The DNA tests seem to be accurate- BUT depending on which company/test- they only test for certain breeds and you can usually see the list of breeds that they test for or have the “identifying genetic markers for”.  So if it was a rare dog like a Pharoah hound- and you strongly suspected a purebred or mix- it would not give you the answers you are looking for.  And the tests are not really necessary- really only more of a curiousity satisfier than anything else.

Our previous dog was probably a Australian Shepherd/Whippt mix- she had the long lean body shape- but she had NO sighthound tendencies- she was so gentle and loving with small animals that we were never worried about her.  And our 2 dogs now- Australian Shepherds- they have a strong herding instinct- but they leave the bunnies alone other than to check for poos under the bunnies if they have been still for ”too long”.  They know that the bunnies are supposed to be there- and they need to respect them.  And they have never even showed any behavior with the bunnies that has made me nervous.

So it is important to take a breeds genetic disposition/characteristics into account when getting a pet- BUT there are exceptions to the rule.  And our first dog- the probably Aussie/Whippet mix- was probably quite mixed- and was our first dog- but set a high standard for all dogs afterwards.  And real mixed up breed dogs tend to be pretty darn healthy- Hershey was extremely healthy- with only one incident that later in life she had neck pain and would not move- but immediately improved with treatment.  She lived to be 14 1/2 when she finally had to be put down due to cancer- and I was convinced we would have her until she was 16 or so (until the cancer diagnosis).

Baroo is from the Cuteness Overload calendar…

I think Tim Allen started this…lol. Remember Home Improvement? It was one of his “man grunts”.

And no, Lin (OT here, sorry), I really had NOT wanted a small dog. I mean, she’s lovable and all…but I was hoping for another husky when my daughter moved out. Now it’s completely off the table.

But yeah, they have their charms. However being able to face off against a larger dog is not one of them. And I worry everytime I walk her that she’ll be gobbled if I meet a neighbor’s dog.

                                                            Bunnies are also missing their ‘out-on-the-bed-time’ a bit more these days. ;_;

Katnip, yeah I completely understand that it’s about the dog’s personality and not so much his breed. Though you’re right, it would satisfy my curiosity to find out! 🙂

I spent a good long time finding the right dog for me and the bunnies, in a week, I was back and forth to the shelter like 10 times! I overlooked him at first, since he wasn’t at the front of his cage barking at me like all the other dogs, so I didn’t notice him. But all the dogs I found on the shelter website kept getting adopted literally right before I showed up or while I was at the shelter!  The first time I went to the shelter with my list of dogs I was interested in, I couldn’t find 4 of the 10 on my list, and 5 of the 10 were on hold and got adopted while I was there! The 10th one didn’t work out. Anyway, I finally ended up asking to see Dog, and that was it, I was sold!

I think with some training, he’ll get along just fine with the buns. I think I’ll start another tread to chronicle the dog-bunny interactions so maybe those of you living with harmonious bunny-dog families can weigh in and help me out. I’ve done my research on how to introduce dogs to bunnies, but still, there are so many different opinions about how to do it, it’ll be a matter of me finding what works for us.

Beka, come visit! And the buns can have a play date! Lol

BunnyOhara… you got me thinking… I LOVE the book Gone with the Wind… maybe I should call the dog Rhett or Butler!

So cute! I’m definitely thinking chihuahua mix, but I can’t figure out what he could be mixed with. He does look like a basenji a bit, but they’re so rare that I wonder if that could be it.

Some friends did the DNA test on their dog and got mixed results. It said husky, which is possible, I guess, because she has a curly tail (which huskies don’t necessarily even have), but otherwise doesn’t appear to be husky at all. And it said poodle as well, which seems very far from the truth. So as long as you take them with a grain of salt and compare the suggested breeds with what you think he may be, I think they’re useful. I figure out of the 4 or so breeds they’ll tell you, at least one is probably correct 😛

I can’t wait to hear what name you pick! I’m going to vote for Milo.

Sigh… it seems to get harder and harder with each pet I get. I don’t remember having any trouble picking all the names of my pets when I was still living at home, granted, that was years ago and I may be forgetting some of the details. Leroy was my first pet since I moved out on me own.  Leroy’s name was easy. His shelter name was Leroy, I briefly considered changing his name, but then left it alone. After that it got a bit hairier and I needed your guys’ help for Jeannie, but we figured one out within a few days of her arrival. But now I’ve been agonizing over a name for Dog for the past two weeks! I’ve been calling him all number of things including Nick, Baby, Boogie, Bear, Booger, Butt, Stinker, Puppy, Dog…

Yes, I think it’s great that they can get dogs adopted out like that! On the flip side… I wonder if their screening process isn’t strict enough. They barely even asked me about housing/care that I was planning to provide and there’s no follow up. Meaning that a dog could potentially get adopted by someone who’s not going to care for it, or someone who’s new to dogs and doesn’t know how to handle it, or worse to someone who’s going to abuse the dog, and that’s not fair to the dog! I understand that there’s a fine line between adopting out the most dogs possible in order to get the $ and donations to run the place and making sure that the dogs go to good homes… My local HRS has a very thorough application and screening process, and sometimes require home visits… then again, bunnies are more fragile than dogs and they don’t have the same volume of animals coming through their doors. *shrug*

But the good thing is that the adoption fee is pretty high and they do send families home with packets of info and tell them to bring the dog back to the shelter if it doesn’t work out… So… I choose to think about the happy side of it and be glad that lots of dogs find new homes! On their website, they list the number of dogs adopted (or “rescued” – picked up by dog rescues) and it’s about 50-60 a week. They have around 90-125 dogs on their website for adoption at any given time. Right now is probably prime time for getting a dog though. They do euthanize almost 1000 a year (I looked up the recent numbers) and that number has been steadily increasing for the past few years. Anyway… not going down that road, it’s too sad.

                                                                        Anyway…. I’m still thinking about the name…

But I figured that the reason I was having so much trouble with the name was that he already has a name! I think it fits. And I really like the biblical reference with the name Nicodemus But I’m already calling him Nick, Nicky, and Nicky-poo!

I’ve lost a couple pounds from walking Nick so much! And the bunnies still get their mommy time! They sleep in my bedroom, so in the evenings, I always spend a couple hours snuggling sitting on the floor with them before bedtime. (Hehe, even before I got Nick, Prince Leroy and Princess Jeannie would never lower themselves to “snuggle” with me!  )

Babybunsmum, thanks! I’ve been trying to find someone with basenjis that I could ask if they think Nick looks similar. I can only tell so much from pictures on wikipedia. According to the AKC breed standard, basenjis always have white feet and a white tipped tail… he has 2 white feet and a black tipped tail and his tail doesnt curl as much as a basenji’s, so I knew that Nick wasn’t a full basenji, but that’s interesting that your manager thinks he’s at least a basenji mix. He’s the right size too. I have heard him bark, but it’s not a bark like my parent’s lab or like a chihuahua – he just does one short sharp bark, never more than one at a time, lol. He has a wide range of vocalizations, whining, howling and this silly little growl-y sound. But for the most part is very quiet. The only time I’ve heard him make any of those noises was when he saw a dog he wanted to meet. He doesn’t sound like the basenjis I’ve looked up on youtube, but then again, he had kennel cough when I got him and his cough has only just begun to go away, so I think his voice might be a little hoarse, lol.
