My girfriend's rabbit, Fitzgerald, just passed on. This morning he was being lethargic and having a runny bottom. He had an appointment with the vets tomorrow but half an hour ago, he suddenly spasmed, jumped and ran, screaming, for about 2 seconds before falling over and dying. The only thing that she thinks it wqas is that she gave him a different type of lettuce for the last couple of days. However, I find it very hard to believe that that would have had that reaction to him.
She is going to take his remains to the vet for a necropsy. This is the third rabbit she's had that has died within 2 years of her having a rabbit. She's feels like she's a terrible mother now. I just don't know how to let her know it isn't true.
Goodbye Fitzgerald. You were such a trouble maker and we loved every moment of it.

Oh I'm so sad about Fitzgerald. I will light a candle for this beautiful rabbit to help cross the bridge. I especially love that top photo of him too. Let us know if the necropsy shows anything. It had to be more than just the lettuce in my opinion as well. |

I feel truly sorry for your girlfriend! I can imagine how she must feel, but I don't hope that it will stop her from getting a new bunny once she is ready again. I hope the neocropsy shows something that will give her peace of mind, so she won't blame herself. Binky free, Fitzgerald! He was a really beautiful boy. |

Oh no! This is so sad to hear. My condolences to you both.
Mark, I don't know if you saw this post last week...regarding a lettuce recall due to E. coli. Unfortunately the link in the thread won't open now but I remember it effected many States. www.binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/a...fault.aspx
I really hope you can rule this out from being related to his sudden illness.

Thanks for the info. The pelim exam has the doctor believing it is a E. cunn... whatever (I can never spell that) - not E. coli although I suppose both could look the same - I'll do some more research. Fitz didn't present with any of the typical symptoms so that's why we didn't think it was anything other than a change in diet. Apparently my GF says that he had had some mini-siezures in the past - something that lasted just a second that looked a lot like waking up from a bad dream. It is possible that he had a weakened blood vessel. The hardest thing on her right now though is that she was there for the end and the screaming he did, albiet short, hasn't let her get to sleep yet.
I'll give you the final verdict when it comes in.
We have also decided that after she gets back east after coming out here for the holiday, she's going to go to a shelter and look for a little girl dutch. She figures since Maryann seems like she's going to outlive the sun, it must be a good breed.

I think the Dutches might be a more hardy breed since they've been bred for a very long time. My 2 Dutches are all over 7 years old and even Mango who I think is totally full bred (but I can only speculate since he was a rescue) and has had some serious issues in the past and some issues now he's still going strong. I think Peaches is full blooded too but her son is a mix. They truly are smart and I think they are just the right size too. I think they have the most beautiful markings too - I mean who can resist those little pants and that mask - adorable. Of course the REW's like Fitzgerald are beautiful too and another one of my favorites. Please let us know what you find out about the final verdict if there even is one and I hope there is because sometimes that makes closure so much easier for us. |

How heartbreaking for your girlfriend and how traumatic for her. I hope this does not stop her from being able to adopt another bunny that needs a good home in the future. But I know it is hard to get your heartbroken- especially 3 times now- and give your heart to another bunny. |

Oh, no, Mark, I just saw this. I'm so sorry your girlfriend lost Fitzgerald. Please send her condolences. Wasn't he the one that stayed with you for a few months while she was moving? He was such a sweetie. I remember you talking all about him. {{{{{{{binky free, Fitzgerald}}}}}}}}}} |

The vet's report came back. Fitz died of a (excuse the spelling) paracardial infarction. Basically, fluid filled the sac that surrounds the heart and squeezed it into a heart attack (hence the painful scream and flailing for a few seconds). The doctor didn't find any hints of an infection so she's saying it was a genetic issue. In other words, there was nothing we could have done about it and there was no way to detect it from the way he was acting. Of course the girlfriend is still blaming herself so it is just going to be a weekend of holding her hand and letting her go crazy for a while.

OH, I'm so sorry. Hugs to your girlfriend. I know that I would have had a hard time with a heartbreaking ending like that. I am one to replay things in my head but one thing that has helped me anytime I am haunted by such a heartbreaking memory of an animal in pain that ended up passing away is I remind myself that that the animal is currently no longer in pain, no more suffering, free of distress, now in peace. That helps soothe me when my mind replays the heartbreak. (of course, because I "replay" the distress, I have to "replay" the soothing answer, but each time it helps more and more)
