I’m just wondering if any of the bunny slaves here are also Degu slaves as well?

I own 5 Degus, a group of 4 boys and a single elderly male with health problems. I’ve also fostered some others as well, all are rescues.
I used to be on a Degu forum and found it is no longer operating, and i dislike those yahoo groups (way to much work) so i’ve not found a place to chat and learn more about these crazy little critters.
I met my friend Degu is 2000 and it was love at first site, i didn’t get my boys untill 2006 and it was a rescue situation that just worked out as a failure foster :p

I find each Degu to be so different from the next, and am curious to learn more about them. My four boys are Axel (a mutated gene, as he has white), Gary, Ray and George. Bruce is my single male who’s bonded to me now and uses my entire upstairs of my house and a gym LOL (George is his son).

LOL, that’s ok, many Vet offce staff in this area don’t either. I had one heck of a time finding a Vet who knew anything about them. I think for a while they were sorta of a ‘fad’ type pet, like hedghogs were here for a while. Because of that (and their long life span) we get a lot in our rescue.

These guys are (left to right) Ray, Axel & Gary. Axel is the one with a rare gene mutation giving him that pretty white face, plus white fur in other areas and pink skin.

This is the cage i designed and built for them, the four boys live here, while Bruce lives in a aquarium upstiars in our living room.

This is Bruce with my dog (his best friend) Whizz. He ran around the whole hosue with a peanut untill he found her, adn then sat next to her to eat it. if he wants past her where she’s laying down, he will move her LOL, he also eats her food.

            ,

            George

This is just a favorite picture, i think Degus (AKA Goos) are too cute. This is Bruce when he was younger.

For some reason, I thought they were a lot bigger. They are cute though.

I can’t stop watching videos of degus on youtube now, haha. They seem pretty social and intelligent. I live in California, though, where most of the neat pets are illegal unless you have an expensive permit! If I ever want to own a ferret or a hedgehog or sugar gliders again, it would have to be illegally! It sucks.

                  This is neat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXsNvTe7lXs&NR=1

There are a lot of neat videos of degus getting affection and just loving it. So danged cute. http://www.indavideo.hu/video/Jolanka__degu

The degu doesn’t seem to know how to feel about being groomed by a bunny, haha

My Degu Bruce doesn’t like bunnies or other Degus really. I found out the Bunny thing when PitStop was playing with me and Bruce was in his cage with the lid off napping. He ran across the room and started being aggresssive to Pitters, i was so shocked. So if a bunny is upstairs now Bruces house is closed up and he inside it.
None of my Goo’s care for being ‘petted’, but i find many other peoples do. Mine are friendly but want to explore run, jump and play (more like ost of my gerbils). I used to let Bruce & his son George play in a spare room while i read, they would nip my toes and try to eat my book if i didn’t pay attention to them.
My Vet says I have THE nicest degu’s he’s ever met LOL, I’ve only been bitten once and it was seperating a fight during a bonding session. Otherwise I don’t find them very aggressive.

Seriously? Wow, people in my State own tigers and bears. Some have panthers and cougars. I don’t at all agree with it and think it should be illegal but it isn’t where I live. It’s stupid, you can buy a tiger or bear cub from the internet and legally own it here but you can’t take care of a wild animal. For example, a women I go to church with has a farm with random animals she takes care of. She doesn’t bucher, breed or sell them. She just loves and takes care of them. A wild boar kept coming into her yard begging for food when she fed her animals. She thought this boar was probably someones pet at one time because it was unusually tame. Anyway, she fed that boar and it stayed in her yard until a conservation officer came and shot it. They said it was illegal to “catch” a wild animal and keep it captive but it had to be shot because it wouldn’t survive in the wild because it was too tame!!!

Oh, I forgot to add that yes, I think you have to have a certain permit up to some degree but people with very little money have them.

Are they related to gerbils? I should research them – Andi before you joined here I never knew what a Degu was! I love them! *snuggle snuggle*

They are actually part of the Guinea pig and Chinchilla family. Degus are from Chile, they cannot have sugars as they are prone to diabetes, so a stricter diet is needed for them. Their front teeth are Orange, while all the others are white. They are very social and live in groups, they are talkative and make bird like calls. If they want soemthing they will ‘yell’ at you for the attention LOL
The babeis are born fully developed, so born with eyes open, fully fured and walking around LOL. Degus live from 6-12 years, I hear 10 is good but it’s hard to say as it depends on their diets etc. They are also sensitive to tempeture change.
Sexing a Degu can be difficult as the genitals look very similar, and male Degu’s testicals are inside their body. They can be neutered, but it’s not done often.
They are smart, and as I’ve seen in videos can be trained to do tricks. None of mine do, and i dont’ know any personally who do.
Degutopia and Degu Rock were good sites I have found information on before.

A lot of people don’t know the long lifespan of a Degu and aren’t ready for that 10 year commitment for such a small animal. And so, more in rescues. They are very much liek rabbits in the fact of lifespan and their teeth, sometimes the teeth need clipping, and they to need hay 24/7 but also branched to chew of to keep their teeth trim.

Thats so cool, they look like giant gerbils!
Can they be litter box trained? That is so funny that they “yell” when they want attention, you should tape that sometime.

Would you say that degus or bunnies are more friendly?

I’ve never heard of them being litter boxed trained, I think they can’t be. I won’t keep them in those bar/bird style wire cages b/c I find Degus spray to much, the cage I built has 3 solid sides and base for that reason.
hhmmmm more friendly. Degus who are not handled are not going to be friendly, but more skittish, though I find they are all have very different personalities. I asked my Hubby who what he thought was friendlier, he said “They are about the same, but it depends on personality” lol…
