I got these 2 from someone who got them as hatchlings thinking they didn’t grow much so they were in 10 gallon tanks. He decided it would be better to part with them so they could have a bigger space.

Neither have names yet one is a Red Ear Slider the other is a Yellow Bellied Slider both are 3″ long

        RES

YBS (battery was dying resulting in the blurry pic and he is super shy right now so he was hiding)

        ETA:

Finally have names. Well my 5 year old cousin named them actually since it took me almost a year to name my last dog…. He sat there and watched them for 3 hours before saying “I think you should name them the one with red on it Kiwi and the other one Figgy” and I actually like them I was a little iffy on Figgy but once I thought on it the name seems to fit him/her. Plus they are good as boy or girl names lol.

My cousin had a turtle as a child and she named it Sarge. I thought that name was cute for a turtle

Not sure what I am going to name them the YBS is a little biter lol anything in front of him he bites he seen the food container I have and went berserk it was funny he was splashing around climbing onto the basking area and diving off.

The little RES is just an attention hog if you come into the room he will press his face against the glass and stare right at you or poke his head out of the water and follow you around the tank.

They are both adorable! I haven’t seen a small turtle in awhile.

Here is a better pic of the YBS

I had two red eared sliders….one was Petey and the other was Marcus….Marcus turned out to be a girl and the poor thing was always harassed by Petey! They got huge and so I eventually let them go into a lake that had tons of other red eared sliders that was behind my house….

As I am sure you know- just make sure to wash your hands well after handling them- they can carry salmonella.

We had two turtles that were given to us since the kids were “kissing” them- then someone else gave us another two!  3 were Red Eared Sliders- the 4th might have been a Yellow Belly Slider.  I found a biology teacher to take them as we never intended to keep them until they were full sized anyway.  Plus you should NEVER release them into the wild- if they were from a turtle farm and not from your area you risk intoducing disease, etc into your area.  I know in Michigan it is illegal to sell turtles under 4 inches- but they were sold “for educational or research purposes”- and all someone had to do was say that they were not going to be a pet- and they were able to buy them.  But that explains how I ended up with 4 of them that I did not buy.  The law was put into effect after many years ago it was popular to sell these turtles as cheap pets to be kept in a bowl of water with a rock- not sanitary at all- and many kids got ill with salmonella after putting the turtles in their mouth and/or not washing their hands after handling their pets.

Katnip - I agree with the releasing thing. It was more my mom’s idea than mine. I was younger when I had them

Hatterbunny- the internet makes things so much easier now- back in the day- how would anyone have gotten proper care info on turtles and about the salmonella dangers and not releasing them into the wild.  I LOVE the internet and do not know what I would do without it.  My Mom would be thrilled if I moved back to the area where I grew up- but the second house she owns (inherited from Grandmother) does not even have cable let alone high speed internet- it is that far out in the middle of no where!

We used to buy feeder fish and let them go into the turtle tank (little fish like guppies) and watch the turtles try to catch them.  I know it seems mean- but they need to eat too and I was trying to keep them entertained- it  took days for them to catch one.

This is after we got the first 2 and had to go out and buy proper lighting for them, proper filtration and the cool floating dock/rock.  That is a 10 gallon fish tank- so you can see how small they are.  There are 2 turtles in the tank- even though I only see one on the dock.

                                  Such a tiny turtle!

Here are some pics of my tank. There are a few things different. A few more large rocks it is now planted and instead of that bowl lol there is a piece of driftwood suction cupped to the side of the tank. And the basking area is on top of the tank instead of inside of it to let them have as much room to swim as possible.  And those floating things are no longer there my pleco destroyed a plant and those are the pieces that were left. And the floating green thing was a piece of Romaine lettuce they munched on for a few hours but I took it out for fear of it getting gross lol.

                                  Turtle Butt!

I had a 20 gallon tank that they outgrew. I also had that doc thing when they were little but they soon got to the point that it would sink whenever they tried to go on it.
