Met Caplin Rous this weekend.  Yeah, he’s a huge rodent – pretty cool fellow though.  He was at the Guinea Pig Hoedown that I attended this weekend and I adopted a darling little black hamster since Caplin was not up for adoption

        Here’s his facebook page:

        http://www.facebook.com/home.php

The hoedown was a blast too.  Here’t the website about the event:

        http://www.theguineapigrescue.com/hoedown2010.htm

Julia who started the guinea pig rescue is a good friend of mine.

I saw that notice on the hoedown in their website a couple of weeks ago, I wish I didn’t live so far away from every thing cool. Do they still have a lot of the robo hamsters from the seizure? I had been reading how you can build a ‘bin’ to keep several in easily.

They do still have some of the robo hamsters – I’d never heard of this and they were all sleeping when I went so I didn’t really get to see one. My little hamster is one of the mini Russian ones – he’s black with little white paws and actually is easy to hold – he’s not your regular fuzzy stapler like some of the hammies. Let me know if you are interested in adopting a hammie and I’ll coordinate it with Julia.

Okay, so I guess the Robo is what I got…now that I’ve googled this.

A hamster you got yourself? How cute! Is he in your rabbit room? What is his name? Maybe a Russian name would be nice…

He’s not in the rabbit room – he’s next door. He’s very cute! I don’t have a name yet for him – maybe Boris or Dimitri – I don’t know too many Russian names.

I think all the hamsters are cute, but I loved the photos of the gray/white dudes all piled up sleeping. I think I was reading that some kinds don’t mind company, but others prefer to be alone.

I was considering either a couple of hamsters or trying to add another piggie to Brownie and Sweetpea (the red/white one). Brownie’s going on 5 but Sweepea’s only 2 so I was wondering how hard it might be to bond a trio of girls. They have a 2-level  2 grid by 4 grid condo with lots of room. It’s been easy with them in the bunny room because they seem to run on the same schedule.

Except when they think I’m running late with the grub, then they set up a whistle and squeal chorus I can hear outside.

Hmmm….not sure about the 3 females – I know all her males are neutered before adoption – you want me to ask about that for you?

I’ve never paired hammies before but I think 2 females might be okay but not 2 males. I’d have to double check with Julia on that too.

We used to have our piggy, hamsters, and bunnies out for playtime together. The hamsters loved hanging out with the buns, but the buns were just annoyed. I suppose I’d have been annoyed, too, if I had a tiny rodent constantly trying to burrow under my belly to hide. One of the hams was an escape artist, and when she’d get out, the boybun would come get me in an obvious plea to make her go away.

I’m still a bit away from actually doing it (want to finish remodeling the bunny room first) but I’m re-arranging with that in mind. When she’s gotten over the hoedown, I’d love to hear what she thinks about either idea. I visit their site regularly so I’ll make a donation since I couldn’t get up there.

                          Thanks!

What did Caplin feel like? from the photo his fur looked more coarse than soft. He looks like a gentle giant.

I’ll email her Kralspace and let you know.

Caplin’s fur was course – he’s very quite and gentle. But he was a big boy for sure.

                              Thanks Sarita!

I hadn’t thought about letting them mix, GHBun, I may have to try it with my quieter couple. I take the piggies out to play in a nic pen in the yard in the evenings and they love it. (I’m paranoid about hawks and stray cats so I hover over it like a helicopter)

How about Ivan? That would suit a black hamster.

I think Cappys are cute looking.

I just can’t get over the phrase “Guinea Pig Hoedown”! If only I still lived in Dallas, hahaha

                                    Edit:

OK, their logo is too much for me! Growing up in Texas + love of guinea pigs = the logo makes me giggle/squeal!

                                    Also, wow:

I knew capy’s are big because they have them at the San Deigo Zoo, but having one next to a piggy puts them more in perspective!

Petzy – I’ve only seen him on his wheel once – seems like he sleeps more than anything.

Can you imagine some one coming to your house and Caplin is sitting on the couch?????? No telling what they would think he was. He looks very sweet.

I saw the hammie pic, in the center one he almost looks like a baby bunny!

omgomgomgomg i’m so jealoussss. i love capybaras!! seriously it is my dream to someday have a capybara. thankfully i am going to school for biology, with my school’s “natural history” option which is more animal and geology focused rather than people and medicine focused. Only 1.5 years left!!! So hopefully I will be able to have all the cool critters i’ve always wanted lol

Man I’m so jealous you got to meet Caplin.

Starting May 11th, I am volunteering at this place called “T&D’s Cats of the World” (www.tdscats.com). They are an exotic wildlife rescue, I’m so excited. I hope they have capybaras lol they used to anyways. They have lions, bears, tigers, wolves, coatis, coyotes, leopards, pumas, deer, binturongs, cougars, etc. I cannot wait to be around these amazing animals.

Hamsters are nocturnal, aren’t they? Have you ever caught him during his active times? I kind of like Hamsters for the way they stuff their cheeks with seeds. So cute. Do you have any idea how old your hamster is and on his life expectancy?

I have no idea how old he is – I imagine he’s less than a year old though. They unfortunately don’t live very long – maybe 3 years…

I only caught him that one time on his wheel that night – going to see if I can catch him again in the act this weekend though.

I gave him some Cheerios this morning and he put one in his itty bitty hands – it was cute. I’m sure he’ll stuff the whole thing too in his cheeks. I’ve given him some greens and a bit of carrot but I’m not sure if he ate those – I have to dig around in his cage when I clean it this weekend to see.

He’s got a very nice disposition and lets me hold him without biting me.

No, I was wrong: they are also crepuscular, so like rabbits.

I looked up their diet because I was curious.  In the wild they  will occasionally eat small insects such as small fruit flies, crickets, and meal worms. Cute?

Kralspace that is funny – I guess hamsters are a bit like hoarders or maybe they are just greedy with their food.

Petzy did it say anything about them eating Cheerios in the wild LOL. Mine won’t be getting any insects unless I can catch a fly in the house.

And congrats on the hamster. I love those. I would really like one on day, so I keep secrely hoping that I get a girl one day who will beg for a hamster, so I can get some

I’ve never heard of black hamsters. You’ve got to post a picture. Are they rare? I’ve only seen the small yellow standard ones and then the Syrian hamsters, but they are yellow as well.
