I just got home from work and was talking to my mom in her room and I saw these familiar looking boxes on her jewelry box. I asked her what they were, and she said they were for me. My auntie thought I would like to have them, it’s Grandma’s jewlrey. I opened the box and saw my grandma’s necklace from her 50th wedding aniversary. My grandpa must have spent 20k on this peice, it’s huge and gorgeous. The necklace went to me and the earrings went to my cousin. I don’t know, im shocked and it brought back so many memories because she was wearing them when she came back from Hawaii to move here to Cali. And her favorite earrings that I put on for her so many times, gold hoops. I miss her so much. I can’t wait to wear the necklace to my orchestra concert Tuesday night. *huge huge huge sigh* I’m wearing a necklace that also came to me, it’s gold with the letter D, for Donita; her name. And it has diamonds in it. It’s very pretty. She gave me some of her rings about 5 years ago and I always wear them on special occasions that I need good luck on. Auditions and concerts mostly. I know I’ll sound great on Tuesday night and that she can hear me. Ugh tears. blehhhhhhh.

She will be smiling because you are wearing them.

Was your Mum waiting for the right time to tell you about them?

I don’t know, I didn’t ask when she got them. I’m guessing my Dad brought them home last night because he was over there watching Avatar with my Grandpa. I just started crying and ran off with them and my mom wanted to keep them in her jewelry box since I have a bad habit of losing things…but I won’t lose these.

Awww that is so nice. I’m sure the pieces are gorgeous too!

When my grandma died, my cousin basically ransacked my grandparent’s house and took whatever she wanted from my grandma’s jewelry box. And Grandpa let her. It still gets my goat. She had some really nice necklaces and stuff that I would have liked to have to remember her by.

I know how much you loved your grandmother, and those are good tears.
She wanted you to have these, they were special to both of you, and she made careful arrangements so what happened to Barbie (all too common) wouldn’t happen and you would get them.
They are to remember her by.
They are to bring you good fortune in life.
They are a link between you.

Your mother is right, though – try to set up a special place, like a small jewelry box in a desk or nightstand drawer that doesn’t get used much, to keep them in. Eventually, if you are in a dorm or shared apartment where you have a high risk of theft, you should get a safety deposit box at your bank to keep them in except on days where you have an occasion and take one out for that purpose. I put my Nana’s pearls there, with a few other items that I wore when I was very young, but worried about in a couple of apartments.

that’s so sweet! it’s great to have a memento like that. i’m lucky enough to have my dad’s wedding band – i wear it every day and think about him fondly every time i look at it.
                    (((hugs)))

Thanks guys I’ll show them to you later, I have to run off to band rehearsal! And yes she must have made arrangements because I was expecting nothing because of how my Aunt and Cousin are, or at least how I thought they were. For months the only thing I really wanted was a mirror that sits in the bathroom, it’s magnafied on one side, and I only wanted it because I used it to put on makeup for Grandma and it just brought back memories I had with her. I still haven’t had the guts to ask Grandpa if I could have it.

What a beautiful gift and a wonderful memory! I wish I still had my grandfather’s pocket watch…it was his father’s and a beautiful silver pentagon shape with chain and fob. I still have the fob, it’s a pen knife…but the watch was sold years ago because we were broke.

Aww that’s too bad Mimz But at least it did help you

A small update. I called my Aunt today to thank her, and I asked if Tierney had gotten the earrings, and my Auntie didn’t know the necklace had matching earrings! Apparently she thought they were cuff links! So they are in a chest at my Papa’s house. My auntie said I can have them too so I am going over there tomorrow before my concert to warm up and get ready and try on the earrings too!

My battery just died, I took some photos so I’ll post them in about an hour or so!
