I am going to build  more permanent play yards for each of my bunnies in thier room. I wanted to get the 16 guage rabbit guard fencing and my husband thinks that the 20 guage (quite a bit thinner) will be okay. It is what they make the chicken wire out of. It is galvanized steel. Can my rabbits chew through the chicken wire?

Oh, keep in mind, they have motive to try and escape....there is a male and female and they are not fixed yet. So far they are okay and not trying to get to eachother but I don't know if Baxter will try to get to Bella and want to chew through to get her.

Yes, rabbits can chew through chicken wire. I had it on the front of my indoor pens, and wondered why i kept having loose bunnies running around the basement LOL. So a thicker guaged wire is better.

Rabbit wire is for rabbits because they can chew through chicken wire. Rabbit wire is quite a bit more expensive but it is very effective at keeping the rabbits contained. If you are dealing with rabbits who want to escaoe they will chew through the chicken wire with great likelihood.

Some would go for it, and some would see it as an obstacle and decide not to even bother with it. Usually the young ones are more adventurous tho, typically older buns think... "Nah. Too much work." Unfortunately, you wouldn't know if they'd chew thru it or not, UNTIL they chew thru it. Better to get the thicker stuff right off the bat.

Thank you! That is exactly what I told my Husband! He has NEVER had a rabbit and has no idea what they can do. We went to Lowes to look for things to make a big multilevel condo for my bunnies and he kept saying they don't chew on wire! Even though, I told him they chew on EVERYTHING! Then, we were going to do a play yard and he is showing me things that 2' tall! I'm like, they can jump right over that! He said, they cannot! I even showed him videos on you tube with rabbits jumping over things that were 4' tall! He still doesn't believe me! lol He will learn!

Well, I learned something new! I have never used chicken wire for fencing pen/housing but I didn't know that rabbit could chew through that stuff!
GOOD TO KNOW!

Me too - didn't know that either.

Tell your husband he doesn't want to learn how well they chew through wire one day when they chew his computer connections. Very bad for bunnies and budgets.

Yes, He would NOT be happy! My bunny chews more than that. He likes to put holes in my carpet, chew on woodwork and whatever else he could find. My other bunny would just rearrange everything she could! lol

BB, I LOVE that pic of your bunny (your avatar). I'm amazed at how much my bunny grew in the last 6 weeks so I've been taking pictures and I've been trying for a pose just like that one! I think the up close in your face bunny with attitude pics are the cutest!

Thanks Nibbles! The credit for that photo actually goes to SaveABunny.org. That is where I adopted her from, and that was her adoption photo that they sent me later to use. The founder of SaveAbunny actually took that photo and she said that Vivian was giving her Divatude when that photo was taken and so she was giving a little lunge to the camera....and that's how that happened.
