This may be a silly question, but how do you know if willow baskets are finished or peeled?  Obviously, I can tell when they are finished with a heavy lacquer or paint, but what does peeled look like?  I am so addicted to bunny accessories, everywhere I go I see potential bunny toys, furniture, etc.,  and sometimes I see baskets for real cheap, but I'm scared to give them to her even though they look unfinished to me.  Does anyone have any pictures of the safe baskets for bunnies?  Bindi thanks you and so do I

It's not a silly question. I had the same debate with myself when I went to buy Sammy a tube.

Above is an unpeeled willow tube on the left, (darker) and a peeled willow tube on the right. (Lighter)

As it turned out, she much prefers chewing on unpeeled willow. I guess they taste better. The peeled one is still intact, after a year.

Her unpeeled willow toys are being rapidly devoured. Both of these are avaiable at busybunny.com.

Thank you, RabbitPam!  Now, I would have thought the unpeeled tube on the left would be unsafe for bunnies.  Evidently, that's not true.  So how do you tell if it has anything brushed on it - would it be shiny? Here's a picture of a basket that Bindi tries to chow down on everytime she gets the chance.  I took it away because I wasn't sure if it was safe or not.

I'm not sure if you can tell from this picture or not, but hubby says he doesn't think it has a finish on it.  Thank you!

Along these lines - Stormy is a nursing home volunteer, and I generally take him in a basket that is unfinished, but has been dyed (think Easter basket). Should I switch out his basket for another? He's generally too busy getting head pets to nibble on it, but now and then he'll try to take a bite of it.

If you don't know what it was dyed with, its better to be safe and take it away from him. Alot of dyes can be harmful to critters.
