So the nasty ick is gone. I went into the fishstore and said “GUEEEEEES WHAT!” “Your feeder fish gave my oscar ick!” And then we had a 20min convo on how that couldn’t be the case. Anywho…he’s still alive…not active really. They said maybe he now has ammonia burn? I treat my tank with “prime” and I just changed the water about 2 weeks ago….I don’t know how he could get so much ammonia with 1 fish in a 50 gallon. I have 2 hours before work so it’s time for a 30% water change *grumble* No one is home to help me, my syphon is short  and it’s a struggle. Water goes everywhere and then I get to deal with rabbits trying to explore in the fishtank storage and inspect the dirty water buckets. The meds turned my tank into what looks like a brackish water tank. blaaaaaaaaaagh

Be careful to not have your bunnies jump into any buckets of water – happened to me!

I used to have a fish tank but I ended up getting rid of it and giving the space to the bunnies!

Haha, as soon as the water hits the bucket I get thumped and they run under the bed lol

Ugh. Ick. I breed my own feeder fish so I don’t have to deal with any contamination.

The worst fishtank outbreak I ever experienced was hydra. One day everything looked fine. The next day a bagillion Cthulu babies were hanging out all over the place.

Yea no more feeders for me, only frozen and pellets. I hope he makes it. I don’t know what I’ll do with my tank if he passes on. I think he looks better but I need to do that water and see if he gets more energy.

No, I have a foot long adult oscar, it’s very common to feed them feeder goldfish to supplement their diet, but you risk parasites and disease so you want to be careful what you feed them.

Update! I just got home and after treating him with a second dose of Tetracycline….improvement!! Almost no more grunge on him and he’s swimming around and even flared his gills and attacked the glass at me

Did my water change finally today. Took the sucker down to half. That was a lot of buckets of water to the bathtub. I can’t believe I actually saved my fish from being sick. Usually they just pass on. I am so happy! This is proof that oscars are really hardy fish!

I posted on these fish forums under the “lessons learned” that I won’t ever feed goldfish to my oscar again. Boy did I get flamed. Now I know to never go there again. They are so rude. If you don’t have a 300+ gallon fish tank forget posting on those forums.

I’m so glad your fishy made it! ^_^ My Shimmer was a feeder goldfish that we kept for almost 12-14 years. He did get the ammonia poisoning in the end and believe me, you can tell when it happens. It’s terrible.

                            But yay! Oscar lives on!

Vive l’Oscar! *sets up a cheer*

Honostly whenever my fish get sick its kinda the end of the line. I can’t recall ever having a fish recover from anything bad. I lost my 16” pleco last summer after treating the tank and doing many water changes, I couldn’t do anything else. They are so touchy and so difficult to treat. I was mad because after this guy told me off that I used the wrong meds (which I didn’t) I posted back saying “I posted this as a lesson learned, saying that this is over and done with, I don’t need your help telling me how to treat my tank when I don’t have this issue anymore because I am not a moron and can read directions on medication.” I felt really attacked, and then after saying “this is posted as a lesson learned, as in …past tense” the guy responded saying “what did you get rid of , the ich or fin rot” some dirt ball posted saying that it’s still in my tank! Ughhh I am so insulted!!! My fish is as good as new, he is mad at me as usual, flaring his gills at me and attempting to bite me through that glass, which is normal for him. He’s one angry oscar! I don’t know I think I am so insulted because I have been reading fish aquarium manuals since elementary school and my grandma taught me so much, she had over 20 tanks in her house and used to breed eels…like…I’m not fish stupid. I can read, and I have plenty of access to people who know more than me. It was like those “Oh it can never happen to me” deals. Like ohhhh I’ll never get in a car crash, don’t worry about me. Well…same thing with my fish. Sure, feeder goldfish carry lots of disease and parasites because of how they are housed and treated. Hardly anyone takes good care of fish worth 10 cents. The store I go to does though and they argued with me hard that I couldn’t have gotten the parasite from them. Well who knows. I just won’t feed him them and I have a entire package of some dead type of fish in the freezer that cost me 20 bucks that I havent even opened and I got it in december. I could have avoided this entire mess if I used those instead!
