The law has been layed by my father and cinnabun and binky have to move out of my room! He said he wants the dog to be able to have free run of the house, and that he doesnt think it is healthy for the rabbits in my room and also that it smells....

I have reasons to argue against all of that, it doesnt smell I am just away for a few days and he does not clean my room or change the litter box properly... but thats not the point his decision is final.

WHat he proposed was that we carpet the garage (its huge!) get a heat pump in it to keep it a nice temperature and make a rabbit haven. He wants to make like multi level things etc

This would mean my rabbits have lots more room, are away from the dog etc... but. It means my rabbits are not in my room! do you think that would be ok for them? I am so used to having them around all the time, I am worried that by putting them in the garage I would only remember to have them out in my room everynight (while stuyding) instead of just having around when im getting dressed etc and well all the time.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Dad will not budge.

That sounds like a fantastic idea! You could even put a nice chair or couch in there so you could hang out with them comfortably.

And I'm actually anti-rabbits in the bedroom. I've grown up with allergies and being told not to let any pets in my bedroom, so I guess I'm just used to keeping them out (ok, so I would let a dog in, if I had one ;-) ) Plus, bunnies (and other small animals) tend to make noise at night. I've had my bunny in my bedroom before on trips and he woke me up at 5am every day.

I'm sure your bunnies will love the extra room to run :-) Just make sure you have a way to keep it cool in the summer too.

It doesn't have to be bad. If the garage has a window and does not have car exhaust fumes, it can really work. I think it is great that your dad wants to put carpet down for them and that he is thinking of heating it too.

Definitely ask for the TV!

If he won't budge - then I think this is a good alternative. At least he's thinking to make them safe and comfortable. If it were me I'd probably just end up moving into the garage!

Yes, too much heat can actually be worse for rabbits than too cold. Will there be a way to keep the garage cool (under 80 degrees F) in the summer, with proper ventilation? I know our garage gets very hot and sticky when it's closed up in the summer.

My bunnies live in my unfinished basement, it's cool in the summer and I have an extra heater for the winter. Even though it's not in the main living area of my home, I spend a lot of time down there. I have a chair to sit on, wether I am grooming them on my lap there, or just hanging out, a radio, i did have a TV at ocne time too. I also sometimes put down a towel and sit on the floor with them. I will read or even eat dinner with them LOL
Where as i would be against most people having their rabbits in a garage, because they may tend to forget them, you've lived with your bunnies in ur room, so I am sure you will find ur room migrating to the garage LOL
It may be fun to designing a large new bunny home!

I think it's a great alternative. A father that would give up his garage for his daughters bunnies! OMG now that's just unheard of! What a great dad you must have. Not to mention, he is willing to take time and spend money to help make them comfortable and happy! WOW! It could be a lot worse. He could've told you to keep them in a hutch outside. This sounds like a fun project. Post some pics when you can.

Wow. That stinks---but at least he isn't making them leave forever. I still live with my parents, and they were pretty mad when I got my bunny. Luckily, he's cute enough that they let him stay. he wooed my mom over. He lives in my room. I live with my parents, usually my brother, and sometimes my boyfriend. The bunny stays in my room, mostly. I think it's great that he's making an effort. He even wants to build a big bunny thing! I know how you feel about that. If there isn't a reason to be in there then it might not work. at my old house, My guinea pigs (pre-rabbit) were in my bedroom. But the computer and the Television and a lot of my things were in our garage which was carpeted. I found I didn't spend as much with them when i was in the garage. You could get some linoleum for the floor, and maybe somehow make it a hangout. add some beanbag chairs and maybe decorate it. Put some of your rabbit safe things there. or, alternatively, beg, plead, and cry. explain how you might not care for them as well if they are in the garage. Rabbits are clean animals. They don't smell all that much.

Ditto Andi. Garage bunnies can be forgotten but not if you love them. My rabbits also live in my unfinished basement (with windows).

Thanks Monkey! -- That's just it, you can make a spot really rabbit-friendly, even if it is in a garage or basement.

I should do the floor too... well, for the summer it will be concrete. I did buy a roll of thick carpet for the winter months that will cover the pen floor, or at least most of it, but it is used and I want to get it steam-cleaned first.

Well, I must say, Dad's idea to create a rabbit haven with more space is not a horrible alternative. He said he would carpet it -- the whole garage?--- so I am just assuming basically the whole garage will be a bunny hang out too during exercise time? Just trying to get full picture here.

Does anyone else use the garage? Would you have to worry about anyone leaving it open or messing around with the bunnies when you are not there? (You may have to put a reminder note on the door).   I'm assuming cars are not parked in there. Are there any windows that can open for some fresh air, or at least you could open it to air it out, while they were safely enclosed.

If the temperature (both hot and cold) can be regulated, where they can also get exercise and fresh air, then you can make that garage your new hang out. I'm sure you can make it your own - Add some hang-out furniture --- and ya never know, it might end up being a great place to do your homework, listen to music, hang out with friends, etc...is it bigger than your own room (??)
