My four rabbits had taken to pooping up my patio during their exercise time. Ever since there had been snow on it, they figured it was fine for littering it up. The snow melted away but the pooping stayed. It might have had to do with Neigey being a recent bond with them but the problem only existed on the patio, not in their indoor pen. I had been offering them four litter boxes which they used plenty for peeing but I needed a change to get them back on track with cleaner habits.

I took the plunge and cut their patio area in half. They now only have an L-shaped area which is proving to be a hit. It provides more shelter for them. I also gave them back their large ‘pig bun barn’ in place of many small boxes.

It has been a week and the littering has stopped.

        Time to hop inside!

But don’t bunnies own everything? That’s what they keep telling me.

I have retained some ownership of things… but it was a struggle! The pig barn there, was my dog’s… but she was happy to part with that, LOL!

You mean indoors? I have to warn you, because of the size and amount of litter, it has a a barn smell…

                          edit:

I’m trying this week to use less litter but my rabbits may disapprove with slipping litter habits again. An added bonus is that the hay is contained this way; before it was literally flying everywhere.

I love the pig barn!  I have all the elements to build a pig barn for Bindi – Sadie the GSD has a giant airline kennel like that – i have a smaller kennel (Jack Russel size) with a door literally torn off by JRT that would be perfect.  Now I have to convince hubby that Bindi needs half of the porch.  I’m actually thinking of building (or hubby the contractor building) a little deck off of the kitchen for Bindi.  Right now the door off the kitchen has one of those guards across the outside where a deck is supposed to be built, and a big drop (we live on a mountain) but hubby the contractor has never built one (surprise, surprise!).

Anyway, Petzy, this has given me great ideas especially with spring in the air!  I love it!

Well Petzy, I was just thinking more of a covered litter box. The bunnies have decided its acceptable for them to sit outside the box on the carpet and nom on strands of hay that they pull out of the litter box…meaning that they have taken to pooping on the carpet which makes them think it’s ok to poop everywhere. I figured without direct access to the boxes, they’ll have to get in the box to eat they hay. Neither has a hay eating problem – they both go bonkers when I put new hay out, so I’m not concerned about discouraging them from using the box/eating hay. And the ones in their pen will still be uncovered. As a bonus, it wont be so unsightly when I have guests over Thoughts, Petzy? (and btw, sorry for thread jacking! )

Hey Barbie, didn’t you know I love thread-jacking? I really do. I see the situation… Leroy and Jeannie having a hay/poop party in the open, yes, I know those! I agree, a covered, larger litterbox will help. You would have the hay at the back so that they have to hop in all the way.

Bindi, seems you have all the ingredients to make patio pigs, I mean a bunny barn. I am slightly envious of the contractor at your beck and call because I am solo when it comes to rabbit projects. Sigh.

Petzy, no need for jealousy.  You know how the shoemaker’s kids are barefoot, the plumber’s toilet overflows for weeks on end, etc., etc., well such is the life of a contractor’s wife.  In a section of my hall, I have a rug and underneath the rug is sub-floor – for almost 9 years now – not kidding you.  He also builds beautiful furniture and turns beautiful bowls and I do get some of these things, but home improvement on MY home is not high on his priority list.  So don’t be jealous – I’ll probably have to pay someone else to do it

What a cute set up your buns have! Again, I must state the fact that I am very jealous you have all your bunnies bonded. I have yet to bond 2 of my 3 (mostly because I’m so scared they will hurt each other).

I’d love for my buns to go outside but the few times they’ve been out they were terrified. The birds chirping, a little breeze…it’s all so terrifying

LOL, kralspace! At least you had his tools to use, did you?

–LPT, have you tried bonding those two? Too bad I moved away from N.S., I would have dropped by to cheer you on then I would have had to borrow your horse, though, too…

Neigey especially was terrified of being on the patio, he was really miserable and yammering. But he got over this.

yep, and I still have them! I love the photos of the bunnies hopping in the house, such a cool setup. No bun pun intended.

Yeah, Petzy, that’s exactly what I was thinking – putting the hay at the back so they have to hop in. Actually, last week, I turned their litter boxes around, so the hay is close to the wall – the couch is on one side and their tunnel is on the other side, so they really can’t get to the boxes from the side and now since the hay is at the back they have to jump in. The poo party has lessened, but I’m still going to try covered litter boxes

I’m so excited for my new apartment this summer! There’s a big balcony (2nd floor apt) so hopefully my roommies will let me let the bunnies out there. I’ll just block off the gaps between the wood fence with NIC grids. And since it’s a balcony, I can just take the broom and sweep all the poos down onto my neighbor! Hahaha, I don’t think they’d appreciate it. I’ve taken Leroy and Jeannie outside a couple times so far this spring (I got them both harnesses, and the bunnies tolerate the harness/leash now. Jeannie’s is pink, Leroy’s is blue! And of course, I’m very careful with them when they’re outside) Anyway, my point is, I think they would enjoy the balcony, it’s covered, and I’ll be out there with them.

Oops… did it again.. thread jacking, lol.
