Before I get to the happy news I’ll update everybody on.. IT. Well the trial was yesterday. It wasn’t easy for me.  But it was worth it, his going to be in jail for a very long time ( I wasn’t the only girl he did this to). It’s such a relief knowing that his locked up. Seriously.  Anyway a few days ago my local rescue called & told us that a bunny had been brought in.  Guys he is such a sweetheart, I’m in love with him. Max is a three year old English Lop mix.

There’s one thing about him though….. Max is deaf. His perfectly healthy other than not being able to hear. I have no idea what I should do. I’m seriously in love with him, but I’m scared I’m not going to be able to provide the home he deserves becouse of his disabilty. I’ve been going up & spending time with him every day & I’m getting so attached to him, & him to me. My mom & I have already been aproved for adoption, everything is set up at home.

I just want to be sure that I’m doing the right thing & that I can provide a wonderful home for him. Does anybody have any experience with a disabled bun? Any tips/information you can give me would be awesome. Both my mom & I have talked to the rescue about it,  we are both really thinking it over. We gave ourselves two more days to decide. I know in my heart that this is right, but it’s my mom who’s really iffy about it. My dad is okay with it.

Hugs Charley, I’m glad that is over for you. Now you can put some closure to this and continue your healing.

I think you would be a great home for Max. Don’t be scared because of his disability – I’ve also alerted K&K because her rabbit Chuck is deaf so she can give you more insight. I think this is a disability that is very workable for a new rabbit owner. I would say a rabbit with a mobility problem I would certainly steer you away from because that’s a ton of work.

I wouldn’t worry about him being deaf, most bunnies act like they are anyways… lol. But seriously, this is a minor thing… I can’t wait to see pics if you decide to adopt him!

It really dosn’t affect him. His a funny, happy, stuborn little guy. I’m a bit nervous about it, but it’s my mom who is really doubting.

I do not have a disabled bunny but the only thing I can see being an obstacle is disciplining him. When our bunnies are chewing or digging we say “ah ah!” and clap our hands and it stops (most of the time) but I guess you could replace that with a squirt bottle. I think you’ll do just fine with him and there is tons of resources and support here if you need it! Glad court went very well! Congrats on another step forward!

A good thump on the ground may startle him out of naughtiness too. Bunnies can feel the vibrations.

I agree that most rabbits might as well be deaf for all the attention they pay us!

But a deaf bun should have no problem in a regular home – the only issue I could imagine was if you had other pets and he might be startled by them.  As long as you make a point to approach him either where he can see you or tap the floor in a standard pattern (like three times) before you touch him he should be just fine.

Most “Disabled” rabbits are surprisingly unhamperd by their issues – they just get on with things as they are.  A severe mobility problem could mean a lot of extra assistance, but just being deaf should be no problem.

Also, yay for putting “that” part of your life behind you now.

im thinking the only problem would be disciplining him, and maybe the whole trust thing?? lik i cant hear you so how do i know your not going to eat me??? but im sure you being in you situation can have paitience with that and the discipline can be done with a few taps on the floor good luck!! and cant wait to see pics

I really don’t think it will be an issue. Many buns often act deaf anyway 😛 and I have seriously wondered about my own bun’s hearing because of the way he’ll stare off into space and completely ignore me 🙂

I think he’ll have a lovely home with you and you won’t even notice that he’s deaf!

Firstly, I hope yesterdays results will help immensely in your healing. Onwards to happy times!

I don’t think you need doubt your ability to give him a good home due to his disability. You’ll do fine!  What is troubling your Mum? Does she fear he’ll have ongoing health issues or something?  Perhaps a trial period with him at home will help allay her fears. Good luck

She’s worried about him adjusting, like maybe Max will have problems settling in since he is deaf. But…… he comes home soon!!!!! We went in this morning & talked to the big boss at the rescue & she helped calm moms fears about it. She told her everything that I had already found out, I guess mom had to here it from an expert “shrugs”
I wish he could come home today “pouts” but he has to get neutered & all that jazz. They are going to do that today so hopefuly it wont be to long. Poor little guy. I love him SO much already. Max is such a sweetie. I promise I will post pics as soon as I buy a new cord, & well figure out how to post pics on here. On another happy note ( so many good things are going on!) all the babies are in there new homes. I’m not sure if ya’ll recall but my neighbor was fostering a mom, dad, & four little baby buns ( that’s how I was first thinking about adopting). Well all the babies & the daddy are in wondeful new homes. My neighbor is keeping Lilly (the mom). She goes in next week to get spayed.
Thanks for all the help guys, in this whole process. From when I was just thinking about adopting to today.

He has those long ears, his fur is orange & gray, & his fur is longer than a normal English Lop. His mixed with something but I have NO idea what. His adorable

He looks a bit like this bun ( the one laying down in front)…….. http://images02.olx.com/ui/1/19/89/9731089_1.jpg Just gray instead of white & it’s sploshier ( like somebody threw different colrs of paint on him with a brush). Max’s fur is longer to. Okay so really he looks a lot different, but I really like that picture lol

                                              Such a cute pic!

It sounds like he might be harlequin in color: http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplane…lequin.jpg

Harlequin is a breed of rabbit (I think the one I posted is actually the harlequin breed) but you can find the color in other breeds now too. If he is, and he’s a harlequin english lop, I may have to steal him. I’m obsessed with both!
