Yup, I’m getting  my wisdom teeth out tomorrow at nine in the morning. I am really worried about it because I am not going under anesthesia – my dentist doesn’t put peope to sleep, she feels it is unneccesary. So I am going on laughing gas and numbing stuff. I also requested taking pills for anxiety beforehand because they will make me sleepy and I will be more out of it during the surgary.

Well anyway I am really nerveous because I had four permenant teeth pulled before and I hated it, but this time they have to cut my gums open to get to the teeth, and they even have to crack my bottem ones because they are lying horizontally in my mouth. I complained because I said that I already had four teeth removed so why can’t I keep my wisdom teeth… *sigh* I guess I just have a really small mouth.

Well anyone else have wisdom teeth removed? How long did it take to recover? My birthday is about a week from tomorrow  and I want to know if I can eat my cake…

Also this is kind of off topic but I changed my room setup so now the bunnies have more room, yay! I really like the setup and I will post pics of it eventually. I took out my chest of drawrs that I never used and gave the bunnies the space that it took up so they have more room to run about.

I had all four of mine removed. That would make me nervous to not be asleep! You will be able to just mush your birthday cake around in your mouth! It took me a couple weeks to really feel back to normal. Your mouth will just be sore for a while. Applesauce, pudding, jello, mashed potatoes, etc., stick with the soft foods to start off. Some icepacks, or bags of frozen peas works great. Good luck! Just try and relax and get plenty of rest! (((Speedy recovery vibes!)))

Is this your regular dentist or are you going to an oral surgeon? I had all four of mine out at the same time and it was done by an oral surgeon…almost 20 years ago. Wow, that just made me feel old to say that.

Anyway, if I were your parents I would definitely request that you be knocked out for that.

Oh my goodness, that sounds awful! Good luck!

When I did it, I had twilight sleep – so it’s not full anethesia, but you’re pretty much out of it the whole time and don’t remember much. I hate to be awake for that kind of stuff.

I don’t remember recovery being too awful, but my mom says I was a big baby about it 😛 My husband had his out just a couple years ago and he was pretty sore for at least a couple days.

Yea I am having an oral surgeon do it, and she just does not like to knock people out because she thinks it is unnecessary because there is the chance that you will not wake up from anesthesia. Yea I would like to be knocked out, but I do like this oral surgeon and I trust her judgment so….

Well I might just bring music or something so I won’t hear her cracking my teeth, YECH! Last time I got some teeth pulled there was a loud blowing noise so hopefully there will be another loud blowing noise so that I won’t hear her cracking my teeth.

I can understand her position with full anethesia – you should really have an anesthesiologist present for that. But twilight sleep is very safe – funny she’s against using that too. Good luck! I would not want to be in your shoes.

it’s not so bad not to be knocked out. i haven’t had my wisdom teeth out yet (that’s got to happen ASAP, though.. i was supposed to get them out a year ago and they’re starting to make my jaw sore) but i have had 2 dental implants put in. they cut into your gums and literally screw into your jaw bone. the oral surgeon doped me up but i was awake for the whole thing. i even heard them drilling into my jaw bone but couldn’t feel a thing. it was pretty cool, actually. i asked to watch with a mirror at one point and they looked at me like i was nuts. haha.. i love oral surgery, though. i’ll be an oral surgeon in my next life i think.

don’t be nervous about not being knocked out. if for any reason you feel anything at all, just let the doctor know and she’ll take the appropriate measures to make sure you’re comfortable.

good luck with the recovery! from what i understand, that’s the hardest part.

I had all 4 out at once but I had the twilight thingie – I was sort of awake but I don’t really remember it.  I can’t say it was a lot of fun but it wasn’t that bad – I laid on the couch starring at the TV and put all my meals in a blender for a few days.  It was good to get it over with though.  You;ll be fine.

I don’t have wisdom teeth on the top, they never formed. I have both on the bottom and as they came in, they screwed up my alignment (only on the bottom, thankfully). So when I eventually have them extracted, I get to look forward to possibly having braces… again. It’s much better to have them out when your young, especially since you’ve already spent all this time and money on braces.

If you are truly this worried about having your teeth extracted, you need to speak with the dentist. The ethical thing would be to put you under, or at least refer you out to someone who will. There is nothing wrong with going under. It may be unnecessary medically, but it’s for your comfort. My grandmother had a hip replacement AWAKE last fall. She requested it, so it can be done, but that doesn’t mean it’s the norm.

Thanks for the support guys – only about an hour till I go in! Yea I could probably request being knocked out, but I trust her judgment and to tell you the truth I would not want to take the risks of being knocked out and not waking up if I could do it otherwise (maybe that is partly because when I was little my friend told me that this guy almost didn’t wake up from anesthesia). Also I may not enjoy it then but later on I can tell people what it felt like. I did have four other teeth pulled without being put under, and it was just kind of creepy. I didn’t feel any pain but I could feel her wiggling my teeth back and fourth to remove them -eww!

Well right now I am really thirsty because I cannot drink or eat for six hours before the appointment.

hope all went well for you! i was asleep when my wisdom teeth were extracted. i actually had 2 molars pulled at the same time – so 6 teeth total, 2 of which were impacted. had it done in the dental surgeon’s office. i distinctly remember the first 24 hrs after surgery being icky but was smooth sailing after that. i had my braces put on less than a week later so there’s a good chance you’ll be fine for your b-day cake.

I got my wisdom teeth taken out about 12 years ago- I was put under for it and they gave me the pain med prescription before hand so it was filled and ready and my husband had to wait in the waiting room the whole time so they knew I had a driver to take me home.

It was weird, they used “gas” to relax me and then put an IV in and I remember thinking “Ow!” and then next thing I now- I am trying to ask (around the wads of gauze in my cheeks)- “Is it done?”  And, it was done.  I was told to go home and take a pain pill and to keep on the regime for a couple of days at least- to not let it get painful.  To me the grossest part was feeling the sutures with my tongue.

About 2 years ago I had to go to the hospital for an outpatient surgery- something pretty minor- but I was completely out for it.  I remember before they did any meds they asked me one word to describe myself.  I thought that was weird- really weird.  They wheel me into the OR after giving me some happy drugs, tell me they are going to inject the anesthesia- and next thing I know I am in recovery and my husband is there.  And I talked to him for a minute or so- and then I was like “I can’t believe the doctor did not come in after surgery and talk to me- that is so weird”.  My husband looks at me and laughs and said “he was in here- you talked to him and seemed awake and fine- you don’t remember that?”.  I absolutely do not remember that- and I can not help but wonder what else I said- and what was up with the word to describe myself- I can only cringe thinking it I elaborated on more than just that one word.

So the nice thing about being awake is that you do not have to worry about what you might say.  Because I am convinced I could have said some really, really stupid/embarassing things and with no inhibitions probably did mouth off about my personal problems!

I had the two top ones taken out last year. My dentist used laughing gas or the numbing thing. I didn’t feel a thing. I was watching a movie while it was getting done so it was a nice distraction LOL

It took me about a few days, however, the gums didn’t close up for about 2 months. It was quite annoying to get food out from the toothless holes

Ok it is over and I am in pain now (mostly because I am biting on gauze, I took it out and it was still bleeding so I had to put more in, it felt a lot better when the gauze was out though).

The top two which were not impacted were fine and I didn’t feel a thing , but the bottom two I did feel some pain and I kept jumping when she did things (I don’t know exactly what they were doing), they tried to inject more Novocaine straight into the nerve, but I could still feel it some- especially on the right side. I was so scared that I started shaking (and clutching the snoopy stuffed animal they gave me) and to my embarrassment I even started crying – not out of pain, but more out of fear. But it WAS scary.

They gave me a lot of laughing gas for the injections, but it felt sooo weird, I was tingly all over and I couldn’t stand it! So I was put on oxygen for the rest of the procedure. It just felt so weird! I actually felt like I was dying or something, my neck was all tingly and I felt like I couldn’t breathe properly.

Also the Valium (for anxiety) made me feel all loopy. I was all dizzy and silly feeling. My mom though I was going to fall over or something.

It was kind of funny because after the procedure the oral surgeon said to my mom that she does not have to worry about me becoming a druggy because I did not like the feeling of laughing gas and apparently some illegal drugs have similar effects.

Well Right now I have tea bags on my wounds and they are feeling better, probably because I took the second half of the Vicadin (the oral surgeon said I should start out by taking only a half of one because I did not deal too well with the laughing gas).

Well anyway I am pretty glad that I did not get put to sleep or else I would probably feel all loopy now, surprisingly my head is clear and I can think clearly, I think the Valium has worn off.

It was kind of funny I had to eat a little before I took the Vicadin, and I tried yogurt, but it was too hard to eat with numb lips, so I cut some grapes up into tiny pieces and swallowed the pieces whole. Luckily I am not that hungry though.

The thing that annoys me the most is that having gauze in my mouth makes it hard to swallow so I end up drooling, it is kind of gross. My numb lip also contributes to the drooling.

Oh and I also got to keep my teeth, they look kind of gross and two of them are split in half because that is how the oral surgeon took them out, but that made me happy – kind of weird I know.

Thanks for all the support guys it really made me feel happier, and I hope I can eat properly and my gums stop bleeding sometime soon.

I am glad to hear it went well, besides all the feeling loopy! I know it does feel much better without the gauze but at least for the first few days I would try and keep it in as much as possible. After a few days I cut my gauze into smaller pieces so my mouth didn’t feel so stuffed!

I am feeling a lot better now that I don’t have to bite down on gauze.

I consider myself very lucky because I am really not in any pain at all now (aside from the discomfort of having extremely swollen cheeks). I think it is because of the strong painkiller I am taking – my mom said as long as I take the pain meds before I feel pain (every 4-6 hours) then it should stay that way. It is a bit hard to talk because my mouth is all swollen but otherwise I am doing good.

I am not worrying about the school work I am missing because I asked the teachers way before what I could do to stay caught up so now the only subjects I have to get caught up in are math and Social studies and French, and there really won’t be much to get caught up with.

I am just overjoyed that I am not in much pain at all! Last time I had teeth removed I was not given a prescription pain medication and I was in a lot of pain! This time it is just uncomfortable feeling all swollen and it is weird being able to feel the stitches with the side of my tongue ( I am not licking the stitches or anything).

Thank you so much for the support guys!

Yes, make sure you keep up with that medication! Also, when I had mine done, we were told to take a pair of pantyhose, put ice packs in the legs, and tie them around my head (top of the head to under the chin). It looked stupid but helped a lot with the swelling.

I am ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED of the Dentist!!!!! A basic cleaning brings me to tears.
I have bad teeth & gums -it runs in my family.

So, I completely sympathize with anything Dental!!! I even had a hard time reading this post.

I also have a very small mouth – I went to the kids dentist till I was about 30. The regular dentist would not see me.
I had 4 teeth pulled when I was about 12 – I don’t really remember it. Oddly enough, as a result, I have kept my wisdom teeth.

I hope you feel better soon!!!

I just had mine out too! It was totally not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but I was terrified too. Heal well!

It is kind of funny I look in the mirror and to me my face looks slightly like the face of a man because men have more square faces and the swollen look of my face makes it look more square. (No offense to any men on here)

And I am frustrated with myself because I would like to play today but I am just too tired to play video games or anything so I just end up sleeping the day away, but thats ok as long as I am not in pain.

Due to them putting me completely under (intravenous) and the meds they gave me afterwards for pain & maintenance, (vicodin and also an antibiotic) I decided at that point to stop nursing her as I didn’t want the drugs to go through to her in my breast milk.

I was SO loopy after that surgery that my sis-in-law and I were cracking stupid jokes and laughing like idiots at anything (she without the benefit of anesthesia) right afterwards and the doc kept coming in and giving us severe looks because I was supposed to be resting. It really hit me hard and they were worried because I had a hard time staying awake long enough to go home.
I was out for the rest of that day and most of the next. I’d had one impacted tooth on my lower right jaw and the surrounding gum had swollen up pretty bad, so it was actually a relief to get rid of those things. I was only afraid (deathly) of getting dry socket, as hub told me it would be excruciating and they’d have to go back in and do more surgery.

I am so glad to see someone hates the dentist as much as I do Sage! DOWN WITH DENTISTS! WHOOHAH! I just had a cleaning yesterday (after having not been in for 2 years…guess why?) and I was in agony most of yesterday. I still hurt today. Plus it puts so much nasty stuff into your stomach that you can’t help but swallow, you feel so sick for a few days! All my gums are receding and the hot and cold are terrible on my teeth, so she told me I had to start rinsing with Rx strength mouthwash and fluoride toothpaste that has to stay on without rinsing all night that will make you hurl if you swallow it…YUCK. Honestly, I’d rather go in for chemo than have a dental!
But at least no cavities. If I’d had to go back in for drill & fill I’d be halfway to the border by now. >.< $600 work of work…UGH.

I had my widsom teeth out as a teenager, and 3 others as well (my jaw is apparently too small for them all). Because they were pulling 7 at once they had to put me under, which I was fine with because I had no desire to be awake through that. For quite a while afterwards I looked like a badly beaten chipmunk – my cheeks were all bruised and swollen.

I also discovered that the human body – or mine at least – was not designed to swallow any quantity of blood. I apparently bled quite a bit – whether it was during surgery or recovery or what I don’t know – and had swallowed it. When we left the hospital my mother was told that I’d probably be kind of queasy and I should be taken home immediately and she should get my prescriptions filled. Well she decided it would be a good thing to stop to have them filled on the way home, so I ended up waiting in the car for about 20 minutes while those were filled, clutching my little barf bag that the hospital had given me in case I was sick in the car. I made it all the way home and into the parkade of the apartment building before I actually had to use that bag, and when I did was I thoroughly shocked to see it was all blood. blech.

I don’t remember a whole lot about the recovering. I remember that I wanted something cool and milkshakes were too thick for me to be able to suck up through the straw. And I remember getting out of bed in the morning to go into the livingroom and lie on the couch.

Luckily I have straight teeth and no cavities with regular maintenance though. I don’t know why I don’t like going to the dentist; it doesn’t ever really hurt or anything, and the people are nice, but it’s just so awkward with someone staring into your mouth and all close to your face and trying to talk to you and stuff.. idk. It’s weird. Also, I’m 20 and I haven’t had my wisdom teeth grow in or even give any indication of coming in as far as I know. Although my mom just never got hers so I’m hoping that will be the case with me as well lol. Speedy recovery!! And hopefully cake eating!!

My wounds are healing nicely, no more bleeding, and I am now on the way to recovery! I think I will definitely be ok for my birthday, Cake is soft and I think I will be able to eat that, but I don’t think I will be able to eat chips or carrots for a while though.

And I am excited because next week is a short week – good Friday. I am also happy that my birthday is on a long weekend, it is going to be fun! My birthday is actually on Sunday (it is on Easter) but we are going to celebrate on Friday so that I have the weekend to play with my presents. As long as I am not in pain on my birthday I will be happy!

Yea basically I have been living on smoothies, milkshakes and pudding. Last night my mom made me mashed potatoes and they were a nice change. It is kind of funny, I use a mini spatula as a spoon because my mom was afraid that if I used a normal spoon I would poke out my stitches with it.

I only had one, but it was growing sideways into a molar so it had to go. Opted for local anaesthesia and really regretted it, as the dentist was doing color commentary during the entire procedure, along the lines of “man, this one is tough, you’re really making me earn my pay!” Couldn’t open my mouth afterwards wide enough even to eat soup, basically wound up mushing bananas against my teeth and swallowing.
