This pic is really bad… so please use caution when opening.

This is absolutely horrifying. I hope she gets the maximum punishment.

            This is absolutely awful.

I am going to move this to The Lounge section because it does not belong in the House Rabbit Q&A.

i just don’t understand people…why must they hurt animals!!! Innocent bystanders to evil people! We had a similar thing happen but with drowning rabbits in the last year. While I have a soft spot for bunnies it kills me to hear any animal is abused. I guess thats partly the reason I have so many bunnies because I make a connection and then because I do wonder what kind of home they will go to if they don’t come home with me!
About 2 yrs ago or so a neighbor had two bunnies, brother and sister. Well, suprise suprise, the kids lost interest so the parents wanted to get rid of them…they allowed them to keep the male because he was friendlier and were going to get rid of the female. there were two little girls outside holding a bunny and my younger sister walked by to stop and pet it, she kind of knew the family. They told my sister they had let her go because their mom didn’t want to keep her so they “freed her” and she came back to the house the next day. Well, they continued playing with her sliding her down the slide in their backyard swingset. At that point my sister had enough, grabbed her off the slide and took her home where that very night she gave birth to two babies which didn’t end up surviving. Firstly she was a first time mother as she was a baby herself, and second after the day she had I can’t imagine how stressed she was! Thirdly, we had never had any experience with baby bunnies and she kept hiding them places throughout the room (we didn’t have any cage because this was not planned so we built a barrier in half of a bedroom.) It was just a very sad situation that people can even be indirectly evil. We found out later that the male bunny died not 2 months after this situation. The female, Cindy (Cinderella), we kept for while and then found her a home with a great family with older children where the oldest, 12, had the bunny pen in her room and took great care of her! I’ve gotten to see pictures of her and she is REALLY happy there! Sorry to make a rant like this but life is so sad sometimes!

Wouldn’t it have been kinder to euth. this bunny rather than force it to endure healing from painful burns and being terrified of people?

I am sure the vet/doc had good reason to not kill this rabbit.

Would you euth your mom/son/daughetr/etc because they got sever burns?

As sad as this story is, that bunny has just got some awesome PR! and will be adopted by a loving family!

I know when our shelter is featured in the news paper or on the radio or TV etc our adoptions jump up 50%!

It sucks that poor rabbit had to go through that but he will now be better off with a family that will love him and hopefully keep him inside!

If a pet has an illness or condition that is not going to medically treatable and the condition is not going to get better then considering euthanasia is a kind thing to do. I’ve had to euthanize some of my rabbits who I knew were suffering – it hurt but my vet agreed that they were suffering and they were not going to get better. I do not consider humane euthanasia murder of an animal at all.

There have been worse off rabbits burned by humans – phoenix at SaveABunny for one. And now, after the medical and social treatments with them, he is a very loving rabbit – still a bit skittish of people but overall very happy with his bunny friends.

I don’t believe in prolonging life just because we can if the animal (or even people when they suffer from debilitating diseases like end stage cancer) is going to suffer needlessly. There are worse fates than death. Existing in a state of constant pain is one of them.

humane euth is fine, but as stated the doc/vet may have a valid reason. The story doesn’t say.

But the question remains unanswered would you euth your loved one if they had some 3rd degree burns and needed to have let’s say a piece of their ear removed?

Well, all we can hope is that this rabbit will get better and that a loving home will be found for him if he does get better. The only information in the article is that he is terrified and has severe burns so that is really all we know. As for the PR, is it really worth the suffering the rabbit had to go through to get some PR…I don’t think so.

Spidey, if this was my rabbit and he was not going to get better, then yes, I would euthanize my beloved rabbit to put him out of his suffering. I cannot speak of my beloved human family and loved ones as I believe that might be against the law…and I would want to speak to my lawyer and my doctor first.

I said that, as a silver lining. Now that poor rabbit will have an awesome new home. And hopefully he will be moved inside…

The rabbit will not continue to suffer physically. It may have scars but there won’t be any pain. Phoenix had both ears removed due to the attack on him, as well as some scar tissue areas on the back, but is very happy and pain free. The trouble will be getting it to trust people again but once more, a rabbit can have a very happy life even if it isn’t into human contact. My bun Dono is a perfect example of that.

Euthanasia, voluntary and involuntary, are both illegal in Canada where I live.

TARM and I were talking about animals who are in unresolvable pain. Severe burns are in the most painful category of injuries and unfortunately pets with injuries cannot always be made as comfortable as people. If ear removal is an option to get rid of the burn pain, this would be the solution. Missing an ear or any other body part does not reduce quality of life significantly enough to euthanize any animal.

I don’t usually apply human standards to animals. I walk my dog on a leash but I would not leash a person for example.

                                          — Glad to hear the rabbit’s injuries were treatable.

This is one of the most horrible things I’ve ever heard. It’s extremely sad that people take out their rages on innocent animals.

I agree with TARM and Petzy – I think this rabbit may have been better off being euthanized. Of course, I don’t know all of the details of his situation, none of us do, so I’ll just hope that his vets and owners made the best decision for him to keep him alive and treat him. I hope he’s able to find a new home and recover both physically and emotionally from this.

The difference between deciding for an animal and deciding for a human whether humane euth. is the best option is that the human can think for him/herself while the animal can’t. If my mother or my child were severely burned, horribly disfigured, and required endless hours of physical therapy, skin grafts, etc. and they wanted to be spared from all of that AND it was legal to make that choice then I would support them. I cannot begin to act as though I know what it’s like to heal from third degree burns. I know when I burn myself on the stove it hurts pretty darn bad, I can’t imagine feeling a greater intensity of that all over my entire body with no way to relieve it other than to be comatose.

I have to echo what most of the commenters were saying after the article, it’s a pity this woman will probably only get a slap on the wrist over this. What a psycho!
That poor rabbit! His story is only the harbinger of more horrors to come when that loony gets out of the pokey.
Between this woman and the one back east who killed the rabbits in the back room of the pet store while there was a manager watching…what kind of cloth are these sad sacks being cut from??

This is such a sad story! I do believe Karma will one day meet up with the people who did this. Animals are just as important as humans.

Being a human that is CONSTANT intractable pain 24hrs a day I can tell you that euthanasia sometimes would be a welcome comfort. Especially the past 3 days that have been SO bad I havent been out of bed. Being told there is nothing they can do for you and no meds strong enough can just make you go crazy!

Burns are one of the most painful conditions any human can go thru. In the hospital we completely dope you up all all times during the healing process because it is so excrutiating. Any wound dressings would mean added pain meds because of the pulling and touching. These people come up off the beds because the pain is just so bad. Not to mention the very high chance of getting an infection thru one of these burns and going septic possibly dying.

I just hope that for rabbits they have pain meds that are strong enough to help w/ the pain, otherwise the bun will just go ahead and die because they wont be able to stand it. I have to say that I have to agree about maybe letting the bunny go to the rainbow bridge. As humans we can explain and medicate but how do we do that with a rabbit? This rabbit may feel that with the dressings and meds that he is still being tortured-you just never know. The healing process is just going to take forever and the bun may just not want to go thru all of that- I know I wouldn’t.

Seeing all those people in pain, with nothing much helping them.. it’s so sad. Was always worse when it was a kid she was treating.

Just an FYI, UK laws and judgements about animal cruelty tend to be a bit harsher than that of the US. Not saying that she won’t get off scott free but our standard is usually 30 days and/or a $5,000 fine. Theirs is 6 months and $27,000 dollars ($20k euros).
