Currently I have an LG Env touch.  I like it, but I use it to check my email and to browse the internet and I have been really disappointed in the slowness… .it takes forever to load my email and the websites, and often the websites don’t load correctly so it’s almost impossible to read some websites.  Both my parents have Blackberries and I’ve played around with theirs a bit and liked *most* of what I’ve seen.  I was just wondering what you guys thought?

I use my phone mostly for texting, checking email, and I use the VZ navigator alot.  I send VERY long texts to my friends w verizon, and I know that Blackberry limits SMS texts to 160 characters regardless of who you’re sending it to… which is annoying.  I know I can send an MMS but then the person on the other end has to wait for their phone to connect and load the MMS…  Also, I heard that the Balckberry doesn’t have a GPS system???

What about apps? Where do you get them, how much are they and are they worth it?

        Thanks!

My hubby just got one, and he looooves it. there are GPS apps you can download if you really want one, he uses it for email, instant messaging, all sorts of stuff. He’s always playing with his phone now

Not sure where to get the apps, as I haven’t played with his phone at all, i know the GPS one he has costs him something after the trial period, not sure how much…

If you are looking for a device that does long texting, superfast internet, and overall a great device get a droid. Bberrys are great, but droids are BETTER!!! I work for verizon and this is the best device. I would wait for the new one though, it’ll be great for combing all your means of communication into a single thread for each contact.

I had a blackberry (blackberry bold 9700) and hated it. In the end I ended up returning it. The thing I disliked most was that there is no address bar while you search the internet and you keep having to hit the back button (how many times depended on how many pages you had been to) to be able to go to a different website. I also disliked how there was no app store directly on the phone (atleast I couldnt find it ) Im not sure if this is the same with all Blackberry’s though. However I absolutely loved the camera on mine. I was used to the iphone camera so I wasnt to sure how I would like this one since the megapixals were different but in the end it was just as amazing of a camera. The wifi calling was also a great feature. If you have a wifi setup you can call even if you have no service (which was great for me as I proboably would have gotten no service as im in the middle of nowhere) I hope this helps some!

They are addictive-we call them crackberries My dad and bro have one-ensure you get a ‘data plan’ that includes all the extra features. My brother got a 3000$ phone bill the first month he had his. That was awesome… heheh Apparently they are great-all the managers at my work have them as well and do all kinds of work on them.

I would not advise getting one for work though-as you’d be doing work all evening and all weekend-it just ..happens when you own one

I have a BB, so maybe I can help. I have the Curve. First, I wanted to say that it does have GPS – I use Google maps all the time. Second, I don’t really text with it because we didn’t get the text plan, but I use it to Gchat and BB message all the time – I love having a physical keyboard.

The app selection is ok. I have one for weather, one for Netflix, Pandora radio, etc. But I’m really cheap, so I rarely get ones I have to pay for and I don’t get the games. I think the iPhone is far better for apps, if that’s what you’re in to, but BB is trying hard to catch up.

Have you played with the web browsing on your parents’ BBs? It’s not fantastic. It may be better on the newest BB, but overall it’s not the easiest thing. I still browse all the time, but I would love for a better browser that loaded faster and showed pages a little more true to life. I haven’t used other smart phones to know if they’re any better though.

Have you thought of the Droid? I haven’t tried it out, but a friend of mine said it’s fantastic and he’s trading his BB in for one. Just something else to think about!

eta: Juliet, you don’t have to backspace through web pages on the newer ones – you just press whatever “hot button” is set to your browser and it will take you back to a kind of home page (which includes a URL bar). They also added an app store now. Oh, and I have the Google maps app for free. It will locate you with GPS, give directions, etc. I’m not sure if it gives turn by turn directions like VZ Navigator (I have another separate GPS device I use for that), but in a pinch Google maps is awesome. And free! :-)

I’ll be getting a DROID next month, since my contract is up. I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Droid.

I don’t think I’ll get a black berry. Too business-y and I do send a lot of texts and I keep thinking I’ll get fingeritis because the keys are too close togethre!

I just got the env Touch! I used to have the bb pearl. My Hubby just had the curve and he just upgraded to the storm 2 (the 2nd gen.), it is an awesome phone!

I’m entering this convo a bit late but thought I would add my 2 cents I have the BB Curve & I love it! I use it for texting & seriously it’s awesome. I have a few apps on it. But honestly? Most on the stuff on it goes to waste. BB’s are REALLY good if you use it for work ( like my parents) but if it’s just for basic things (texting, IM, web, stuff like that) I would get something else.
In two months I’m going to get a new phone when my contract is up & I’m thinking about getting a Droid but idk yet.

katiep… when is the new Droid coming out? We have Verizon and my husband is itching for a Droid, but if the newer version will be better, he maybe should wait. I love my old Dinosaur… my black enV2.

Well, it’s called the Devour…it’s already out in the third party stores but will be in Verizon corporate stores on the 25th. It’s supposed to be great but I don’t know yet because I haven’t gotten my hands on it. The Droid by Motorola is awesome….the HTC droid is good too! i’ll keep you posted if i get an opinion on the new one!

thanks for the scoop on the devour, katiep. i’ve been thinking about getting a droid but i was waiting because i knew there would be a second generation of it coming out soon. i just looked up stuff about the devour and it looks awesome. i’m gonna hold out for it, i think. =)

well actually now i have to take back what i said in my previous post. reading about it made it sound a lot better but i check out phandroid.com and watched all the vids on the devour and i’m not interested in it anymore. might go ahead and get the droid. they’re both awesome phones, i just think the droid is the best on the market right now for what i like.

blackberries seem cool and a lot of my friends have them, but i’ve always found them rather confusing. that’s just me, though. i know tons of people love them.

I also looked up the Devour on CNet and it looks like it’s a lesser version of the Motorola Droid. The OS is lower, the screen is smaller. I’m guessing they’re coming out with that as a lower cost alternative to the Droid. Very strange that they’re releasing a lesser phone instead of trying to better their phones.

beka – i think that might’ve been their intent, but i find it strange that the specs are lesser than the droid in every way but it’s heavier, thicker, and rumor has it that it won’t be less expensive initially, which doesn’t attract new clientele. if they were trying to attract the less technically-inclined, i think they missed the boat by not making it lighter and less bulky-looking.
