Does anybody have any tattoos, or plan to have any?

I feel that tattoos should have a good meaning behind ’em, as the tattoo will be on forever

If anyone has, what are they? Why did you get it and what is the meaning behind the tattoo? Pictures welcome

My mother passed of Ovarian Cancer in December 2009 for battling for 7 months.

I have ALWAYS wanted to get a tattoo, but I did not know what I wanted. I wanted some Japanese, as I am 25%.

Getting this tattoo was something that I wanted to do for my mom, and for myself. It put my mind at ease.

My mama did everything for me. She was a single parent and struggling to pay bills and still have fun. I just had wished that I could do more for her. So, this was the only way for me to honor her for the rest of my life.

While my mama was battling, I was helping out with bills, despite having a job that does not pay much. I did my best. She kept telling me, “I am so sorry for making you grow up so fast.” I told her that “I’m 22 mom, Its about time for me to grow up.”

My mom’s illness has helped me realize what I want to do with my life. I was so busy last year, that I decided to relax and spend time with my hobbies for the first half of this year. I will be doing FAFSA (aid) in July to go to a vocational school to become a Medical Assistant. After I get a job (keeping my fingers crossed!), I would like to take some business classes online part time. I want to make my own side business involving cute and kawaii plushies.

My grandma (my mom’s stepmom, actually. She is grandma to me), my mom’s siblings, and I threw a “Celebration of Life,” for my mom and it was sooooooooooooo fun. There was no tears. Only laughter and good food. My mom LOVED eating (She was born and raised in Hawaii, and I was born there but came to Washington when I was 2) so there was all Hawaiian food

After settling in with my dad in January, I got my bunny, Koucha/Chacha. She has helped me cope and filled my life with laughter. Losing my mother has been the hardest thing ever. I wanted to honor her.

So on January 28th, my friend took me to a tattoo parlor that some of my friends have gone to.

The Ovarian Cancer Ribbon is TEAL. The Japanese character in black means “mother.”

I’m sorry if I mention this so much on the board. It helps me cope by talking about it, and having a rabbit has helped me so much as well. I feel like I have found a place that is warm and loving, and also funny

I’m sorry about your mother, Brittany, she sounds like wonderful woman and you’re a good daughter. I don’t have any tatoos, but when I read your post I laughed about my daughters. When she was young she got 2 dolphins circling her naval. Cute, then. Two pregnancies later, they don’t exactly look like dolphins anymore…lol. I guess one has to take expanding skin into consideration!

That’s a very nice tribute to your Mom. Thank you for sharing your story.

Me, I’m way too old for a tattoo but I love seeing what others have.

I’m so sorry about your mother! That tattoo is a wonderful memory of her and her struggle.

I don’t have any tattoos. I considered getting one in college, but my mom told me she’d stop paying for college if I did it 😛 By the time I graduated, I lost interest. I just got a lot of piercings in my ears to make up for it. I would’ve wanted the tattoo on my stomach, but the thought of a pregnant belly made me think that wasn’t such a good idea. If I did get one it would be a gecko. I just love gecko images for some reason.

I love seeing other people’s tattoos though! And I love hearing the stories behind them.

I have never considered getting a tattoo as I knew that some day I’d change my mind about it.  But now that I am over 40, I figure that my mind won’t be changing too much anymore – well other than forgetting everything but I suppose I won’t be upset if I forget why I got the tat.   But so far, there’s only been one that has me thinking about it:

I have thought about getting the following tattoo as I am often doing the ‘guy’ thing with Save A Bunny and picking up the remains of rabbits who have had a bad turn at the vets.  I figure getting one of Inlé-rah would be nice.  I see him not as a harbringer of death but as the guide to bring the recently departed to the happiness beyond the rainbow bridge.

Along the same lines, there’s a nice tribal tattoo that could be a good representation of El-ahrairah, the rabbit trickster god.  BTW, both are from Watership Down.

Those are really nice, Mark. I especially like the second design. Go for it. Call it your mid-life crisis. It’s cheaper than a red sports car.

Brittany I am so sorry about your mother. It’s only been a few months so please don’t apologize for wanting to talk about it. The tattoo is a lovely way to keep her with you always. I lost my brother to cancer when I was 25 and he was 32, and it was truly a life altering event for me.

I’ve heard several times that there’ll be a lot of people wanting tattoo removals in about 30 years. They say they sag with age, so I think you were smart to get on on your ankle, which won’t change much at all, instead of some other place. (A bunny that was smiling on someone’s chest at 25 might look very disapproving at age 60.)

My mid-life crisis was finding a girlfriend who is 15 years my junior – and she’d never let me near a rabbit (even my own) again if I got that on me.

Mark, you should get a tattoo of a big ol’ bunny bite mark on your arm!! You can tell people it’s to show your love of Maryann.

Marc – I recognized Inlé-rah right away! I agree that he is a guide!
The tribal El-ahrairah is cool too!

IMHO – getting a tattoo in memory of a loved one is a lovely tribute!

Brittany- I’m glad you found this forum and that it helps you with all you’ve been through. I lost my Dad 6 years ago to cancer (when I was 22 as well) and it’s still hard but I mostly only have the good memories now.

Sarita- You’re not too old! My mom was in her late 40’s and always wanted one so she went for it. She loves Winnie the Pooh so she got a little Pooh on her leg (lol…that sounds funny ). I always wanted a tattoo so I couldn’t believe she beat me to it.

I have a big Ankh symbol( Egyptian Symbol of Eternal Life) design on my lower back. I love anything Egyptian. My first tattoo and it’s pretty huge. Takes up most of my lower back. I’m a fan of black tattoos, I find too many colored ones can look tacky. I also have 2 Stars on either side of my abdomen. I want lots more but they are pricey. I want one of each of my other two loves: bunnies and horses.

My bf has a tattoo of a samurai on his shoulder and I love the design. He got the artist to sketch the design based on an action figure he has. It’s amazing what some of those tattoo artist can do!

I agree with getting tattoos with reasons behind them. My first was a little over a year ago, completely on a whim with my boyfriend while walking around Orlando. I got his lips in a lip print on my right side ribs, kind of under my arm..make sense? His last name starts with Lips..and he got a rose on his ribs since my middle name is Rose. No names! Ha..

My second is my dog Cuddles’ paw print. I had to put her down at the age of 14, last September due to a big tumor, lung cancer, and a collapsed lung. I figured out that I wanted this about 1-2 weeks before we did put her down, so I tried using paint and getting a perfect paw print on a piece of paper….well all the perfect prints ended up on the floor and my paper was a smudged mess. So I kept thinking of different ideas and walked in my room to see her laying on her side sleeping, paws up. Took a picture! Now she’s always walking around with me

A couple days after I got it.

Cuds on her last day…we took her to the dog park. She looked so healthy and happy <3

I’ve been wanting to get 2 tattoos for the longest time.. a little dragon, and a raven. I have adored dragons since I was about 4, so theres little chance I’ll stop liking them.

I want a raven partly because my online name for all my games is Raven… and my middle name means raven in gaelic I have such a cheery name… my first name means grey or dark fortress, and my middle is raven… my mom is such a sunny person lol.

Britttany, I love your story! ;_; My stepmom died of pancreatic cancer when I was just a week into my eighteenth year…it does make you grow up fast, doesn’t it? I just went to my checkup yesterday ,btw, and all is good…so at least my own daughter doesn’t have to go through what I did.

I love to see your plans for the future, it is so much better from a parents’ perspective when a child has dreams they want to go for than not. I hope you reach all your goals and I’ll be first in line to buy one of your homemade plushies! ^_^

I’ve been wanting to ask…does the name Koucha have a particular meaning? And I’m guessing the pronunciation…KO-cha?

My hub has a cross with a bayonet and a helmet resting on it and USMC (Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children) and a cloud over a grave that he got after leaving the Marines. It gives him a lot of (skin) trouble and the colors fade and change from time to time. God forbid he cuts it by accident (or some eruption comes up through it) because its a mess to deal with when that happens.

Despite this…I love this idea because since Shadow passed, I really want to get my old dinosaur computer back up and running and find the Haida wolf I drew years ago and try to merge it with a picture of Shadow and put his face on my shoulder, so he’s always watching over me.
However, after telling my son in no uncertain terms that I won’t pay for his college if he gets a tat, (or a piercing), I can’t exactly get one myself. But I know Shadow’s beautiful face would be wonderful comfort to wear for all eternity.

I recognized the image of the black rabbit and the tribal rabbit is beautiful! I would be hard put not to get one of those myself, if I could even consider it.

I’ve thought, briefly, VERY briefly, about getting a tattoo. But I don’t have a very high pain threshold and I’m terrified of needles so… I don’t think I’d be a good candidate for getting a tattoo. The tattoo artist would start and get a teeny line done, and I’d freak out and move and ruin it. I can’t even watch those shows like LA Ink because it hurts me when I see people getting tattoos done, lol. I’m a wimp

I thought it would be painful.. but it feels like an irritating feeling … I thought it took an hour, but it was only 12 minutes o.o I was grabbing onto my pants because it was such an annoying feeling and I made faces XD

Oh, Brittany, my heart goes out to you.  What a lovely gesture and tribute to your Mamma.  I have tossed around the idea of a tat for a long time and like you, I want it to mean something – not just a random cartoon character.  Then I watched LA Ink and my standards have been raised.  When I can afford to get a tattoo done by one of those artists, I will get one.  I actually thought of a mural on my back (not really seriously) and have all my pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge arranged with room to add more. Pretty crazy, but something along those lines.

My back tattoo took well over an hour and the only part that hurt was when he did over my spine. You could feel it rattle against the bone.

I wouldn’t suggest it for a first tattoo!! My tummy tats were nothing, no pain at all.

I have 3 tattoos.  The first one I got was an iris because its my sorority’s flower.  The second one was a butterfly with my sorority badge flying away from the flower when I graduated.  And my third I just got last friday…..its a bit bigger than I originally thought… Please excuse the redness as I had just finished getting it.  We added 2 more iris’ and four bunnies.  It is to honor all the bunnies I have had or will have in the future.  They are my furry babies!  Oh did it hurt so bad!  On the spine was the worst!

KatieP, I love it!  That’s kind of what I had in mind, but with all my different babies.  Tarm, I wonder how much one of Kat’s body portraits would cost.  I cannot believe how real they look – more like a photograph.

From what Ive seen, Kat does really good portraits!

My boyfriend has a very large black tribal piece on his back, and one with a similar design on his left arm. He designed both himself, and both have very personal reasons behind them. I know to get them all done, it took 4 sessions that were several hours long. And each session cost several hundred dollars. But it came out so nice! I wish I had some pictures to show you guys…

I love my pets dearly- and have lost some- but have not considered a tattoo memorial since I would feel guilty about getting a tattoo of one and not others.  So I think I would only get a tattoo for a MAJOR event in my life.  It has crossed my mind of getting a horse tattooed- outline of a running horse as they have done so much for me since I have started taking lessons- but since I am not sure I am going to wait.  And I would have it represent all horses- my current leasing horse and the horses that will be in my future.

I never got into eventing or showing, but when I was 12 I bought a Chincoteague Island pony (3 months old!) and raised and trained her myself; her name is Sea Star. I too am currently horseless – I miss it! I donated her to a therapeutic riding program almost 4 years ago before I went to collage. If I get a tattoo, I would get one of a horse. A small one. Maybe a portrait of Sea Star. but I afraid of needles. So like I said before, I doubt I’d be able to sit still for it.

She was a really little Chinese girl (like 4’10”) and during the summers in high school she did henna tattoos at an amusement park. She was amazing! Sometimes she’d buy the supplies and give us all temporary tattoos of whatever we wanted. She was majoring in linguistics, and is now in grad school for something, but she always said she wished she had become a tattoo artist. I think it would be so fun to be tattooed by a 4’10” cute-as-a-button Chinese girl 😀 Her name is Kat too, coincidentally.

And there are alwas severl bitty babies that have to be brought over by boat!   There are always so many people there, so if you want to get a good spot to watch from, get there WAYYY early.  They do the swim early in the morning at low tide. My family and I used to go every year. The year I got Sea Star, my mom told me that I could “practice” bidding, and that I couldn’t bid more than the balance of my savings account. Well, the auctioneer kind of helped me win this adorable little flaxen chestnut filly… We were SO NOT prepared for it But it all worked out. And I got so lucky that I had such a good horse. She was a fire cracker, and I got bucked off countless times, and she was kinda stubborn sometimes, especially with the other people at the barn when they were turning her out/bringing her in, but for the most part, she was so willing, and she put up with all my mistakes as I learned with her. I miss her, but she’s at a good place now. I miss riding too.

She’s about 14.1 hh, so she’s on the large end of ponies. However, she can’t be ridden now – she’s retired because she has a problem with her stifles (the equivalent of human knee caps) – horses can lock their stifles so they don’t fall over when they’re sleeping standing up. But her stifles lock unexpectedly, especially when she’s being ridden or has been kept in a stall for too long. This developed last year when she was at the riding program, and they had to retire her because it causes her to trip, even when walking, and being ridden puts her in a lot of pain. (I know I mentioned this in another thread recently, and I’m sorry, but it really bothers me… she’s turning 8 this year, and she’s supposed to be in her prime, but now she’s already out to pasture. At least she’s at a very nice family’s home where she can do whatever she wants.)

Anyway. I think that would be a very nice tribute, MM. I prefer very simple tattoos, and tattoos that have a “hidden” meaning are the best.

You DON’T talk about it to much. Heck I probably talk to much about the rape but it does help. I have actually said more about it to y’all than in my support group. I think it’s becouse it’s not face to face & it just comes out. So if it helps you then say whatever you need to

I would love to get a tattoo someday to cover my scars & to show how far I’ve come in recovery. But I don’t know what I would get “shrugs”

She and my grandpa lived in hawaii for 20 years and I loved visiting every summer. I miss her dearly. I’m so glad you bunnies have helped you cope with your difficult time. You are so strong!

My tattoo is my favorite piece of music. It’s called Mars Bringer of War by Gustav Holst. He has an entire suite called “The Planets” . Mars is the aggressive piece with lots of loud brass, since I play French Horn, of course I love loud brass music. The part I have copied on my back is from the climatic part of the piece and it’s super loud! This song pumps me up and makes me glad to be a horn player!
