I logged on to MSN today to check my email and was horrified to see the following feature news headline underneath a picture of some cute bunnies: “Is Rabbit the New Chicken?” It talked about the environmental benefits of choosing rabbit meat over chicken. Worst of all, it also goes into detail about how easy it is to kill a rabbit! It made me want to cuddle my bunny. I hope people disregard it and continue eating their chicken nuggets.

ugh, just a warning, the first photo is a group of women laughing while they cut up skinned bunnies. Chicken nuggets for me too!

Unfortunately they are right. Rabbits make one of the best sources for a multitude of reasons. I just don’t like them for it although I’d give good money to watch someone try to prepare Maryann without them bleeding profusely from the exchange.

That’s sick. Last year when I was in ag class we had a lecture about that. There were some pretty nasty pictures “shudder”
MarkBun- I’m guessing Maryann is a high-energy bun?

I just stay away from reading these things. I would rather focus on helping people with their pet rabbits than focusing my energy on reading things like this. It makes me too sad and those people cannot be changed in this article. I’d rather focus on the joys of owning a rabbit as a pet.

Ah, sorry, maryann is a bit of a legend on these boards from my attempts at bonding her.  Here’s a couple quick vids of her (the black and white) and her now bonded boy meeting for the first couple of times.  Note that these bonding techniques were what I was told to do by the House Rabbit Society HQ in Richmond, CA – and I’d never use them again.

I read that article as well. Honestly, it doesn’t make me that angry. If I’m going to eat meat, I need to realize that someone out there is raising these animals to sell them as food. I also like that people are taking more of an interest in where their food comes from and if that means raising their own food, then I don’t see anything wrong with that.

However, I could not personally own an animal and kill it for meat. I couldn’t personally hunt either, though I realize hunting is necessary to keep down the deer population.

I’ll stick with raising veggies for my food 😛

Ah okay. Thanks for posting the videos! That was really interseting actually, since I’m trying to learn everything I can about bunnies.

omg Mark! I hadn’t seen those 2 particular videos before, run Dono, run! Man she looks like a rattlesnake going after him (don’t tell her I said that or I”ll be looking over my shoulder)

I’m doubling my money on Maryann!

I much rather eat game meat knowing it came from an animal that until it was suddently killed lived a wild life style. The idea of commercial feed lots sickens me, where animals are subjected to being treated as meat even while they are still alive. People are going to eat meat, I would welcome if people actually learnt to skilfully kill their meat animals rather than fool around trying to process a rabbit in their backyard with techniques that they watched on youtube. I would not eat rabbit for a number of reasons but I imagine a chicken feels pain and distress just a much as a rabbit does.

I feel that anyone who wishes to eat something should have to kill it at least once themselves. Even if they’re raised in the cramp quarters, they would have to see how they lived, pick one out and do the deed themselves. Then they can decide if it is worth eating veal.

Lol! They are both adorable though, even if Maryann is a bit pigheaded. That’s what makes there “marriage” interesting haha.

veal, now that’s a meat I couldn’t touch. Have you ever heard a mother cow lowing for her baby, for days? I am against eating baby animals of any species, exactly because I couldn’t touch a baby anything for a meal.

The only babies I like to eat are baby carrots and baby lettuce.

Well now that they’re bonded, everytime I walk into the room, Maryann is giving Dono kisses.  So as long as he lets her get first bite of any food, it’s a lovely marriage.

Was this the article from New York Post (or Times?) last week?

I read that one, maybe it’s becoming and “It” topic in the media. They seem to be raising the reputation of rabbit meat. Though I couldn’t eat it, I do eat other meats and would feel a hypocrite to totally condemn it. So much is what we are used to. For me to eat beef, chicken or lamb – so normal. It’s when I start to think about the animal like I do rabbits that I feel I want to become vegetarian. But usually I’m not thinking like that as it is old habit.

What I really didn’t like about the article I read was about people meeting behind a butchers in NY to learn how to kill them. Some of it involved bludgeoning.

By the way…in that article, it told how one restuarant had rabbit on the menu and it caused a party to walk out once they discovered this. So now the restuarant serves it but doesn’t name it. It’s in a dish called a Country Terrine. So if you are adverse to eating certain meats, be aware of this sort of practice and ask questions.
