We might have gone over this before but I could not find the thread. Are bird toys safe fore bunnies?

I saw some pretty sweet bird toys at the pet store,and I was just wondering if I am allowed to buy them for my bunnies.

I know I cannot get the ones with rawhide in them or the rope ones, but there were cool ones that looked like they were made out of colored peeled willow. Also there was this one made out of this soft wood, but it did not say what wood it was.

So are most things that are safe for birds safe for bunnies too? Just the bird toys looked so much more interesting than the bunny ones.

AS long as they don't have seeds, they're usually fine for rabbits.

Parrot toys should be fine for bunnies- as long as they do not have "treats" attached or inside.  In fact Shredders are commonly used for bunnies.  The only thing about parrot toys you need to be careful of is if they get wet the dye will most likely bleed off onto whatever it touches- since they use food safe dyes.  And the woods are usually harder- not like the balsa wood that Fun4Bunnies uses.  And I don't think the parrot toy blocks are flavored- they are stimulated by the colors and shaped and natural instinct to chew them up already.  And I might be cautious if it has a chain to hang it- I would hate to see a bunny bite the chain and get its incisors stuck or broken.

But in general birds are very sensitive creatures- like rabbits are- so they are quite particular usually on the dyes and woods and other materials like Shredders used.

why no seeds?

Seeds and nuts are higher in fat and not recommended for bunnies- plus ingesting the shell is not good for them- bunnies are not equipped like birds to be able to crack/shell the nut or seed.  I am sure wild rabbits scrounge for seed and anything else to eat- but they are not being feed a regular, stable diet and need much more energy than a house rabbit does just to survive to their average life expectancy of 3 years.

I know there are some long-haired breeds like Angora's and Woolies that might have a different diet requirement- or at least it is debated- but since I have short haired lops I have not really followed or retained much info on the debate/discussion.

 

my buns have a mix, i was worried they might be poisonus. phew! my buns get a pellet/seed mix.

MirBear, switch to something without seeds, plain timothy pellets are best. The seeds are pretty much pure carbohydrates, which too much of can cause poopy butt and severe digestive problems according to Dr. Dana Krempels. So get rid of the seeds

ok, i have two containers for bunny food 1 with seeds and 1 without so should i only give the seed 1 as treats maybe? (my mom doesnt want to 'waste' anything

Now I want to go to the store to buy a bird toy! They just are so much more creative looking and I could just try one and if the buns don't like it it will still be a colorful addition to the cage

I'd just separate the seeds from it completely. The chances of the severe digestive problems are just too high to even try it in my opinion.

Luckily most of the toys at my pet shop have no seeds.
