Ok, I need someone to talk me down....I went to the mall today just for some new pants and figured...hey while i'm here i'll go visit the pet store.....BIG MISTAKE! I don't know why I torture myself. There was this bunny called BunBun who is an all black airplane eared little sweetheart. This petstore takes in adult animals from people and shelters to help find homes along with cute puppies and kitties that normal petstores have. His little tage said his name, he was born july 08 and "my parents separated and neither wanted me. i really got the rotten end of the carrot in this mess." he would poke his little head out of the cage he was in and would go nose to nose with me...just soaking up the pets! Come, on...could you say no to this??

My problem is I don't have the space. All my bunnies are well cared for, have plenty to eat, get lots of time out to visit.....it's really just a space issue for keeping him. I'm sad, I wish I could keep all the unwanted bunnies in the world! So please, talk me down off the ledge!

oh dear, we all know you'd give him a great home, but even if you adopted him there would be another bun just like him to come along soon and then you'd REALLY have no space. you don't want to end up with too many buns to care for, either. don't worry, give someone else the opportunity to rescue him! if they're a rescue-oriented type of pet store i'm sure they'll find a good home for him! |

Space is the only thing stopping me from gettign mroe buns right now too. After M&M are bonded and living together, we'll have more room for another bun, or a foster pair maybe... |

*pulls out chainsaw* Take down a wall and build on! But yeah Corpathina is right there will always be another bunny to be rescued. I hate going into our one petstore because I see what our rabbits have and want to give that little bunny the same spoiled rotten treatment but we have no space and we need to watch our money. He is a cutie though...just don't understand why people do that. My mom said with the econmy now and people trying to save money that's probably the first to go is the pet, just tossed aside like a random toy that no one wants |

I was hearing that on the news last night, BT...I think they said 2 million pets have been abandoned since the recession began. 0_0 What a handsome guy! I sure wish I were closer to him, I'd take him on in a heartbeat! I wonder too if pet stores don't just make up these stories of how the bun came to be there in the first place? Not like they aren't adorable enough on their own and every one wants to take them home, but then to add the pathos....*shakes head* And Easter is still a few weeks away. It's so hard to see that already bunnies are being dumped. |

Lol at thread title! Katie, they sure do know how to pull on the heart strings. The bunnies and the petstores! I do like the sound of the store though and think this bun will be ok. So he probably will get adopted, hopefully by someone savvy. Though I know you'd give him an awesome home... |

It's hard when you can't save them all. Do you know anyone in the area who is an animal person and would be open to adopting that little guy and providing him proper care? Even if they don't have rabbits now, you could help them with what he needs and teach them what his care will require. We all started out with no rabbit experience and we learned from there. |

MB, I was going to say control yourself until I saw him. OMG! My heart turned over in my chest. Did you see him or are you cruising the internet? BTW, the best way to come off that ledge is to STOP cruising the internet sites of bunnies. Baby steps. Next, buy your supplies from pet stores that only sell products, not animals, or at least only dogs and cats to adopt. The wee black one sure is tempting. I agree that he will be adopted out quickly. make yourself a deal, katiep, that you won't go back there for one month. At that time, see if he is still there. I will bet he found a new home. If he is, we'll talk you down again or lend you the chainsaw to expand your rooms. |

I agree 100% with Pam. While it is commendable that this petstore helps to find homes for abandoned animals, if they are ALSO selling animals raised in mills or by backyard breeders, I would not not give them my business, period. Not going to stores that sell animals will reduce the temptation to "save them all" by about 95%. As far as the internet, it's difficult to not look. The same way a person may go on "racy websites of ill-repute", I sneakily log on to Petfinder and scroll the pages, all the while glancing over my shoulder that my husband doesn't walk in and "catch me" red-handed. B/c the answer is going to be: no room, no money, Meadow will be ticked off, two is enough, blah, blah, blah... What has worked for me is being SPECIFIC about what I "want" my next bunny to be. If I break down and go on Petfinder, I will ONLY look for Flemish Giants. GRAY flemish giants. B/c I know there are none in my area. I can ogle the cute ones in PA or MI and talk myself down from driving 6 hours away. I don't look at any other bunnies. If I based my decision on who is cute or friendly or neutered... I'd have 500 buns. So by narrowing my wishlist down to one breed... I prevent myself from going crazy over everybun I see. Now if I ever come across my "wishlist" bun in my area... I'm going to be in trouble. |

Was just browsing their site.. might have to drive over and see him tho I know the humane society needs more volunteers for their bunny room, most people that volunteer are there for the cats or dogs, they forget about the small animal room. So.. I've been meaning to go over there and offer my services to the bunbuns. |

Mellowzmom-He is in Strongsville, Ohio, why interested??? i'd feel better knowing a great bunny like that went to a great home!.....After sleeping on it I'm not quite on that ledge but he was absolutely adorable...I so wish I could take him home, but it wouldn't be fair to my bunnies I already have. Maybe when I get a house I can have more room.....but for right now, apartment life is a reality. Thanks everyone! |

Thank goodness that is pretty far away!! Actually, I have more than enough animals right now... And Mellow goes to school with me which would make bonding really hard. I hope he gets a good home, he seems really sweet. |

Lol it wouldn't be the first time I traveled a ways to get a pet. One of my dogs lived in a bad previous home I was former friends with the family and they basically told me either you come get her or we shoot her. I was around 19 at the time and lived in Ohio and she was located in Colorado I packed up my car and off I went got the dog and headed home it took around 40 hours with 1 overnight stop on the way back. I was exhausted but extremely happy. |

One of the hardest things about being a huge animal lover is wanting to help them all. I feel the same way about bunnies I see online and when I used to go to pet stores (I can't go in them anymore, I get so sad and angry...). If only there were more people who wanted to help there would be more homes for these little darlings.
My home, time and finances can't support more than 3 bunnies, unfortunately, but that doesn't make saying no any easier!
Congrats on getting the new bunny! I'm glad you are taking him home. |

Thank you everyone for the congrats! Who knows, Smokey may...keep your fingers crossed!! I know I know.....I will get pics up asap (please stop poking with that pointy stick!! lol). We are going to keep him separate for about a week till we get him fixed. We get paid friday so i'll make the appointment in the next day or two. There is no way I want to introduce an unfixed bunny in that room.... My brother in law was down for a visit for my husbands birthday and he is an animal lover too so we waundered around the mall and i convinced my husband to meet Bun Bun (formally). He loved my husband...i mean LOVED him...literally his hand/arm. He kept trying to hump it. He IS a horny teenager, born July 09. And my husband fell in love with him. We have named him Albert. Partly because he looks SO intelligent but apparently Albert Einstein had a large head and so does Bunny Albert. Plus he just looked like it. We think he is going to be pretty big because right now he is about as big as our adult bunnies. Does anyone know how long they grow for? I can't wait for him to come home. I'm a sucker for airplane ears! Apparently the back story is correct, the owners son bought his girlfriend this rabbit and then they broke up, she wanted to get rid of it at a shelter so they agreed to put him in his mom's shop. Apparently he didn't get a lot of attention because he was so excited to be visited and pet. I love him already. I will post pictures as soon as he comes home! |
