How about five? Ha I can just imgane the look on your face at the moment. Let me explain. So I was on craigslist earlier today (yes I know bad idea) & I stumbled over a post that really intrested me. A guy is trying to get rid of five buns! 2 of them are mom & dad. Dad I think is a lop mix? Mom I have no idea. They have three little babies that are only five weeks old. He said he was willing to seperate (at that age!). I freaked out, told my mom about it & we had a long conversation where quite a few tears were shed. But in the end we both feel in are hearts that the best thing to do is take them in & foster them. I replied back to the guy, he replied back, & then my mom replied back yet again with her phone number ( I’m 17 so she has to do the talking). The guy is supposed to call her tomorrow morning (boy am I glad the next two days are teacher workdays!)

I have already called my vet & told her about the sitation. She said IF, & when we get them to bring them straight in & she will check them over. Then when the babies are old enough she will help me find them homes. Man I so hope this works out. I have not been this hopeful/happy about anything since Flopsy passed.

Now speaking of that let me say one thing- I AM NOT TRYING TO REPLACE HIM! I was never even thinking about bringing another bun into my life this soon. I didn’t think I was ready- I still miss Flopsy so,so,so much. But both mom & I feel that this is right. We would not be doing this if I didn’t think I could. But something in my heart tugged when I saw that post. I know that may sound stupid but it’s the only way I can describe it

Many of us are very familiar with that feeling. Sassy, I just responded to you about this in the other thread where you mentioned the CL ad. I’m happy to hear you have your Mum’s support on this and you are looking at this as a foster for the moment. I know you cannot replace Flopsy but you certainly can do this in his memory!  He was a special bun. He helped you learn what you know about rabbits and so to feel prepared to take this on.

Barbie- Thank you. I think I’m going to need it haha

JerseyGirl- You know whats weird? One of the babies has a little marking on his face that looks exactly like Flopsy’s. Maybe he sent them to me when I needed something like this the most. I had an horrible dream last night about Flopsy’s death. I didn’t go to school today, & I was curled up in my computer chair crying when I found the post. I know I’m prob reading to much in to it, but it’s nice to think about

About the cost. I have about $300 dollars saved up that I will use IF this happens. I’m not expecting my parents to pay for everything (though mom is saying she wants to). The vet also offered me a discount on the visits. Bless her heart.

Haha no I couldn’t do that to her. While we are better off than most family’s we still have a budget & such. We could afford it, but I’m not going to do that to her. I’m more than willing to spend my money on cute little bunnies

So does anybody have any advice? Has anybody ever done anything like this before? I’m so scared this is going to fall through at the last second. I’m getting so excited, even though I’m trying not to. If this does go through what should I expect? I’ve never had more than one bun before so I’m clueless haha. How should I keep there cage set up? I have tons of NIC grids left over, so as soon as I know this is for sure going to happen I’m going to start setting up there space. What should moms diet be? What age are the babies weaned? What if moms pregnant again? Oh God lets hope she’s not. If she is though I will manage

Be careful with the NIC grids – the babies may be small enough to escape though the holes.

I don’t know what mom’s diet should be but I’d think higher in calories (and calcuim?) to support feeding her babies. Ask your vet on that one.

Babies shouldn’t be weaned earlier than 8 weeks, but idk what age is idea.

If mom is pregnant again, and it’s early enough in the pregnancy, your vet might be willing to do an emergency spay.

I know that’s not a conclusive answer.  I don’t have any experience with baby bunnies, but those were the things that came to my mind.

Oh crap I didn’t think of that. Hmm I’ll have to figure out something to put around it so I won’t have baby bunnies everywhere  I’m going to have to call my vet tomorrow cause I have tons of questions. I want to make sure I do everything right. It sounds like this kidos have had a tough life (including mom & dad),I just want them to be happy.

I do want to caution you not to get your hopes up just yet. The seller could sell them yet. I don’t want to sound too cynical, it’s just they can make more money by individually selling them. I hope he did give some assurances to your Mom that he’ll hold them for you. Was she able to mention that it was too young to separate the babies?

If you are able to bring them home, set up different pens for the adults (obviously). Make a place in Mama’s pen where she can get away from the babies from time to time. Try get the food that they are currently on then look at switching over slowly if current feed is not approriate. Mama and babies should be on alfalfa pellets.

Yeah I’ve been telling myself all night to calm down. It’s just hard. He did say he would hold them until he talked to us tomorrow, so I’m praying he sticks to his word. If he dosen’t A- I know I’m going to be upset. That’s why I’m trying so hard not to get my hopes up. B- I’m forever going to be worried about them.

Thanks for the advice/tips everybody! I’m going to bed (It’s almost 1am haha) but I’ll let y’all know how it goes.

I hope you get them and post tons of pics!!

Definitely ask your vet, but I believe the mamma should be on unlimited pellets. Also, you can give her veggies (if she’s used to them) and let the babies nibble. It really just depends on how she’s already been eating. If she hasn’t been getting veggies, I would just leave them out.

The babies should be eating mostly on their own by 6 weeks I think, but should stay with the mom until 7 or 8 and stay together until 8. I think that’s how it goes. So they may wean themselves early, and the mom may try to not let them nurse, but keep them with her anyway unless she gets aggressive with them. Even if it looks like they’re not nursing, they’re probablye getting a little bit which will help with their digestion.

If you are going through wiith this, you will need to have a fail-proof set-up. These babies will mature quickly and you don’t want them breeding accidentally.

$50? I thought the ad said $30 for all of them… Small price to pay but.. it’s infuriating that some people have NO morals and their word is as good about as a rotten egg.

Wow, that’s kind of you and your mom to take those buns in and get them checked out and try to rehome them. So are you thinking you’d keep mom and dad (spay/neutered of course) as your personal pets and just rehome the babies? I would maybe consider holding onto the cages at least temporarily since there is a chance mom might be pregnant again. Clean them up very well… if they are wire-bottom, get a piece of linoleum for the floor. They might come in handy if she is pregnant, or if the babies are opposite sexes.

You’d be amazed at the many uses for a cage. You might be able to make litterboxes out of them, use them for vet visits or in a pinch when you need to confine a rabbit after a fresh spay etc. With multiple young rabbits in your house you will need them. I have used cages to put things out of harm’s way such as a cell phone or library book so my rabbits wouldn’t be able to nibble at them. People have wondered why I ‘caged’ my alarm clock but at least it still had all its buttons the next morning.
