Late afternoon yesterday Mops segregated himself in one spot in the condo and woudn’t eat what I brought them. With Mops I think hairballs right away because he has that wool on him and is the group’s main groomer.  I brought him upstairs and massaged his belly; I could hear gurgling and took this as a sign that it was in fact gas. I gave simethicone. I waited…. I had to keep him by himself so I would be able to know if he was passing anything. (You have to hate this waiting ) After 7 hours he did, then started eating around 1 a.m. and I returned him to the others. He is fine this morning, perky, and eating.

This is what he looked like during his episode: you can see he is hunched, uncomfortable and unhappy.

I am pretty sure I caused this by feeding him apple before bringing their fresh hay. I usually always always feed hay first before anything, especially sugary treats. I find the rabbits, well, animals in general for that matter, are so sensitive to inconsistencies in feeding routine.

awwww, poor mops! he looks so miserable in that picture. good mention about giving them hay first, though. i sometimes wonder if it’s a bad idea the way i feed MJ his greens first thing in the morning. i just trust that he’s been munching hay all night.

i had no idea mops was a lionhead lop! what a handsome boy!

Yes, thank you, he’s better, so much better! I should make more movies of him, I love him so. You guys will have to suffer through watching them.

I am going to accept that he is a lion lop. Technically he isn’t, but he sports the same hairdo as MJ. — How much does MJ weigh?

                  Mops now:

Poor little Mops… Glad he’s all better. It’s so hard to see them in discomfort. Maybe it would be easier if they weren’t so incredibly adorable…

what is he technically, petzy? i’m so clueless when it comes to rabbit breeds and the possibilities/names. maybe MJ isn’t a lionhead lop either! all i know is he has a crazy mane and lop ears. haha!

hooray for videos! i love videos so much more than pics. you can really get the character of the bun a lot better through videos.

MJ is between 4 and 5 pounds. he was 4 pounds when he went in to get neutered but has gained a little weight since then. how much does mops weigh? from the video they look about the same size. seeing a lop run with his floppy ears going everywhere is cute, but then when you add the crazy hair do, it’s just tons cuter.

                      your whole group is precious!

technically he is the result of a breeding between a giant angora and a holland lop. he weighs 5.5 lbs
where did you get MJ? what’s his story? He looks purebred with the harli markings and all

i got him when a coworker of mine said her family bought a bunny from a local pet store for easter and a few weeks later decided he pooped too much and that they had too many pets and couldn’t keep him. -eye roll- so i hadn’t seen him or anything and immediately agreed to take him. when i first saw him i was rather surprised because i expected him to look like.. well.. a rabbit.. haha. and he looks like a cross between a gremlin and a teddy bear.

anyway, they had no idea exactly how old he was or that even he was a male (they thought he was a girl as he was only a few months old at the time). i’ve been very tempted to take a picture of him to the pet store and see if i can jog their memory or if they’d know any specifics on him or at least tell me where they got him from.

i’ve always said he’s a lionhead lop because that’s what everybody on here said he was. i’m surprised to hear that mops has angora in him simply because he only has traces of that angora fur. not as fluffy as pics i’ve seen. it makes me wonder if MJ is actually a lionhead lop or maybe something else, because his fur is very similar to mops’s.

                          what is mops’s story?

A giant angora and a holland lop? What a weird pairing…what was what in this pairing (father and mother that is). It doesn’t seem physically possible to me to pair these two breeds.

Mops was brought into a Humane Society as a 4 month-old by the people that had bred him on purpose. They said they had tried to breed lop-eared lionheads and now had too many rabbits. They had sold some of Mops’ siblings but I guess Mops didn’t make that cut. Sarita, maybe they lied. Who knows. Mops’ undercoat is all wool, and he grows the straight face furnishings of the giant angora. I keep them trimmed.

This is Mops as a 4-month old

oh boy, i can definitely see his fur well now. couldn’t tell from the other pics because you must do such a nice job of trimming it. =)

that is a strange pairing. either way he’is precious. MJ’s fur is not like that, though. i think everybody was right when they said he’s a lionhead lop.

                                mops is pretty unique.

He looks like a little sheep or something in that photo – so cute!

According to Wikipeida a giant angora is 9.9 pounds but an English angora is anywhere from 4 to 7 pounds so maybe it was an English angora but I’m no angora expert.

I think but I’m not positive that a lionhead is a cross between Jersey Woolie and Netherland or something like that which makes sense since they are small breeds.

But based on what you are saying about the people who dumped him, it wouldn’t surprise me if they did something like mixing those two breeds since they evidently were totally irresponsible. Lucky for Mops he ended up in a great home :~)

You ever know how a mix will turn out but being from a petstore I bet MJ is relatively pure, whatever that means in a new designer breed as the lion lop, haha. He’s gorgeous for sure.

Mops molted off some of the wool he had as a kit, like the lionheads do.

He has wispy weird guard hairs and wool underneath.

Poor Mops. I love him! Looks like a little terrier. I’m so glad he’s feeling better now. He looked very very disapproving in this first pictures 😛

Sarita, I’ve heard stories where a nethie has mated with a 9lb bun! It was a situation where the kid had two buns, unfixed, and was sure they couldn’t mate because the male was so much smaller so she let them play together all the time. Surprise! Bunnies will mate under any circumstances. ::eye roll:: It’s definitely possible. Though I think it’s safest for all concerned if the big bun is the female – little bunny moms can’t handle such big babies.

Funny, this is how Mimzy looks a lot of the time, both when he is well and when he has gas. I can only tell the difference between the two when I can hear the gurgling from the doorway of the bunny room. 0_o
Glad to hear he is feeling better. I sure understand the having to stay up late waiting for that first nibble that signals they are recovered!
