Bringing Miss Buster in for her spay on Friday.  I'm thankfully not dropping her off, or I would be in tears. My husband is doing it.

I know my vet will take good care of her, they are recommended by the HRS and I loved the vet when we brought her for the check-up.

Any advice on what to bring w/her and how not to be so sad for her being scared in a strange place?

I'm pretty sure she has to stay overnight. Also, I took off Monday to stay with her.

I would bring fresh veggies and hay and also some of her pellets if she eats those.

Also something she is familiar with to put in her cage at the vet's office. Maybe put a blanket in her cage a few days before that has her smell and your smell on it and take that. I doubt she will be wanting to take any toys.

Also I would let the vet know if she drinks from a crock or a water bottle - actually if she drinks from a bottle, take hers, that would be familiar.

Thanks Sarita.
Do you mean putting a blanket that she currently uses in her carrier that i'm taking her in?

That would be good! Just ask them to put it in her cage with her. Maybe since your hubby is taking her you can type out some instructions to them about her food and the blanket and stuff.

I always take Monkey's bear with her to the vet. She likes to snuggle with it in the carrier.

Heheh Monkey has a bear

I bring my pairs together of course-great thing about a bonded pair is they can go togehter. Chuck always goes with his lion (his raggedy beat up lion lol), I also bring them with whatever towel they have slept on the night before (everybody gets towels to sleep on)-and bring a bag of food (I always send a TON so that if they have to clean the kennel they can just toss it out) hay/veggies/pellets-send her fav veggies with her-that will encourage her to eat. And a small sample of her fav treats-say 2-3 raisins.

Oh and if you have an old shirt or something that you don't mind a little chewed up-that might be nice to send if you wear it for a bit and has your scent on it. That could be really comforting

"Moosie" LOL.
I wish Sammy would like a bear. Lately she's grooming my slippers. I think Spockie is whispering in her ear "try her slippers. They're delicious."

Glad your hubby is bringing her in for you, but really there's nothing to cry about. She will be fine, it's quick, and she will be one happy, healthy bunny in no time.

(Gee, I have a dental appt. this morning. I should take my own advice!)

((Good spay vibes))  I would make sure that they send you home with pain meds (usually Metacam)- females do not bounce back as quickly as males do since a spay is a more complicated abdominal surgery- and you don't want to be stuck on the weekend with no pain meds for her.  It took about 24 hours for my female, Cotton to start eating normally but Griffin was eating treats and veggies at the clinic before i even picked him up to go home.  I would still take pellets, some hay and some tempting tidbits along with water bottle if that is what she is used to in case she does want to eat- but do not be surprised if she is picky and selective at first and just wants to chill out in her cage when you bring her home.

My bunny had poopy butt for 2 days after her spay- and I had to give her a butt bath- but since I knew what caused the mushy stool- an interruption in eating pattern- it was not concerning just a little messy.

Well, thanks everyone!

She's there right now! I cried when I put her in the carrying cage.....i'm such a baby.
I feel like calling the vet right now and ask her how she is. She said they'll call us back at 6pm! I am NOT waiting that long!

Denise... call, call, call..... I called my vet about every hour and they were happy to give updates.... and Ifelt better. While Pebbles was at the vet I took some time to wash her towels and clean her xpen area to get it all spiffy once she came home.

Pebble's Pebbles, because that was the first present she ever gave me. }Whisker Tickle Kisses{

Thanks everyone...they told me at about 4:30 yesterday that she was waking up from anesthesia nicely so that's all I got. We will be getting her in a few hours and i'll report back. It's so weird right now with nobun home!

Well, Dr. wants to keep her another night. I am so upset. She's not eating and they have to syringe feed her and they want to make sure things are ok with her, so its best they keep her. She looks so out of it...she's still on pain meds. They also found out she has pinworms! They tested her poop a long time ago, and they didn't find it, so not sure if she's had them forever or not. My poor baby. I pet her for half an hour there. She's in a heated cage w/her little bed and she looks comfy, but she wouldn't eat even her treats or parsley Dr. said she is fine though, and she did well with the syringe feeding.
I hope she gets to come home tomorrow. I'm so worried about more complications. I took off of work on Monday, but hope she's ok by Tuesday.
I cried when I saw her. The put this vaseline like substance around her eyes for the surgery, and it was all wacky and greasy and didn't look the same. I kind of made it better w/pets though. Well please keep her in your thoughts.

So, they started syringe feeding her after a couple of hours after the surgery? That was quick. Molly didn't eat before the evening on the day after...and only a little bit. I was told that was fine, and that they didn't expect her to eat on the same day after surgery. She didn't want to eat hay or pellets, but only basil and other herbs, so I think it is important to try out different types of treats and foods before deciding that the bunny won't eat.

I hope you will have her back soon! It sounds like they are taking very good care of her.

For surgery they put ointment in the pets eyes to protect them since they cannot blink while under anesthesia- and the body temp "melts" the ointment.  It keeps the eyes moist and protected while they are under and during recovery.  You could wipe her eyes (whe will close them) with a warm, wet washcloth- just be sure not to get her wet- just a damp washcloth will do.  But it is common that it can make the eyes look like that.

I am so sorry to hear that she has to spend another night- but at least she is getting good care and you don't have to be the "bad guy" for force feeding her.  I know you would rather have your baby home with you though.  A spay is like a human woman gettng a hysterectomy- many people don't think of it that way- but the technical term for a spay is an ovariohysterectomy (includes the ovaries also).  That is why I don't like clinics that don't require pain meds for spays (cat, dog or rabbit)- my clinic does and it is not optional it is included in the price.

My female- Cotton (my avatar) was much slower to recover than my boy (Griffin)- but I am glad that your vet obviously must monitor each patient closely before discharging them to go home- that is a better scenario than sending a pet home that is not ready.

((Feel better soon vibes for Buster))

Sorry. Missed a post

Really don't worry too much about her, although it is difficult, I know. It sounds like they know exactly what to do. They sound like devoted vets.

Just make sure you have lots of nice food waiting for her tomorrow. She will be just as happy to see you as you will be

They do sound like Excellent and on top of it Rabbit vets. Girls DO look terrible after a spay and that vaseline stuff for their eyes can freak you out ( It surely did freak ME out)

But her care really sounds top notch.

Healing vibes for Buster!

Thanks everyone. I'm really trying hard not to think about it...some wine and cooking is helping. Just hope this night goes quick and she's ok tomorrow. It's so tough. The vet was left a note to call me, but she hasn't yet...just to give me an update. There phone lines are closed now, and I dont want to page them.

Anyone have pinworm experience too? I'm so shocked about that too. They are giving me meds for her for that.
