I was reading an online article about the making of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. OK, I know Tim Burton is another word for weird but his films like the Nightmare Before Christmas can grow on you in a kinda creepy way.

About half way down the page is a sentence about how they visited shelters with abandoned rabbits to observe their behavior and make their animated rabbits true to character. That’s just wild. Now I can’t wait to see it just to see how Burton handles the buns.

I’m fascinated by his version of this. It will be interesting to see the Dark Side of Alice in Wonderland.

I can’t wait to see this! I dare say I might even shell out the couple of extra bucks to see it in 3D. I have yet to see a movie in 3D despite the supposed advances in technology. I also do not understand why certain cinemas do not want to show it… It looks to be one of those movies better enjoyed on the big screen.

I do have to say that college has made me look WAY too critically at everything I watch and used to enjoy, so I hope this movie, while still being pleasing to the masses, is a step up from what I have seen as of late.

Tim Burton movies give me nightmares. What he did to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is unfortunate…I loved that movie as a kid. His version was just spooky and made me so uneasy I couldn’t watch it. I have no desire to see Alice in Wonderland. Just the previews made me edgy. I don’t know what it is…but it’s weird.

I am so excited to see that movie. I found that the original was a little creepy but I still loved it. I really enjoy Tim Burton’s films!

I’ll see it! I’d like to see it in theaters – it just seems like something that needs to be seen on a big screen.

I’m iffy on Burton’s stuff – some I love and some I’m not a fan of, so we’ll see! It looks visually stunning at least.

i love burton but it took a while for it to grow on me. i remember being scared of james and the giant peach simply because the animation was too strange for my taste. i love it now, but it was freaky as a kiddo.

I really like Tim Burton’s work, but I don’t care for his wife as an actress.

Thanks for the link above, because I didn’t know it was a storyline variation based on the books, not the actual story of Alice in Wonderland. It saves that first reaction of “this is wrong” and allows the movie to be seen for what it is, rather than what it isn’t. I hope it gets to theatres, since it clearly needs to be seen on a large screen. I haven’t watched a 3-D film yet, so this would be a good one to try.

I am a huge fan of the books from early childhood, but mostly as an adult. My Dad likes to quote from the Walrus & the Carpenter, so I learned most of that. I actually much prefer Through the Looking Glass to Alice in Wonderland, and did some illustrations in high school from Looking Glass. I reread that often.
Both were very dark. There’s nothing sweet and light about either book. Most people remember the Disney version or others, but they were written as satirical works about the politics of the day along with being a children’s story, so they can be read on many levels. That’s why John Tenniel’s illustrations were so important to Lewis Carroll, since it was using recognizable faces – as if George W. Bush’s face was drawn on the King of Hearts.

One thing bugs me already: They keep calling her the Red Queen, but she behaves like and is clothed like the Queen of Hearts from Alice in W. The Red Queen is from Looking Glass and is a very different character. (I like her.) Q. of Heart screamed “Off with her head!” Not the RQ. Sigh.

                        Our purists are chafing…lol. ^_^
I love the Lewis Carroll works, I have a leather bound that carries everything associated with Alice. Looking Glass is also my favorite. So much more involved and detailed that Wonderland. I take it that Burton’s version is more attuned to the new series “The Looking Glass Wars” which is a bloodier and more sinister version of the Wonderland books.
When the kids were in grade school, I had to give them an example of how to rewrite the Jabberwocky…so I wrote about an angry dandelion in the garden and the unfortunate gardener who had to contain it…I managed to fit it in pretty well, but I think it intimidated them.

Has anyone seen 9? (the one about the gunnysack dolls, animated…not the bordello one) I don’t think the storyline for that was very good, but the animation was interesting. Definitely a tame piece that hints at how warped Burton is. 0_o

I know my BFF is going to see it, if she hasn’t attended some preview screening already (she lives in L.A.)…she is a huge Johnny Depp fan and he can do no wrong in her eyes.
I may go if I get the time. I still haven’t seen Avatar yet.

Neither have I, MM. And it’s the end of my second day off, so I’m too lazy to go out to the movies now. zzzzzzz
OH! [off topic, apologizing in advance] since you’re here, I wanted to tell you that I watched my latest Netflix movie, “Mystery, Alaska” last night. It was good. Have you seen it? Is that accurate about AK, or was it too much in the boonies?

This thread is making me want to re-read Alice! I read it first late in high school. I remember my English teacher saw me with it and asked if I had read it before. I said no, and she was so shocked – she said I was always reading something and she couldn’t believe I hadn’t read it yet. Haha. I’m kind of glad I waited – I think it’s much more of an adult book (not that kids can’t get something out of it too).

I also thought the article was great for explaining how the movie is a re-telling. I had no idea and I definitely would’ve thought “This doesn’t make sense” when I saw it.

I have yet to see Avatar, but in my defense, I’m waiting for it to come out at the $11 IMax theater rather than paying $25 for the regular IMax 😛 I think it should be out next week, finally.

We just don’t get to movies often because hubby hates being in town. It’s too time consuming for him.
I do remember Mystery, Alaska, Pam…it was the one about the hockey team. I have to say that, while some things are correct in anything cinematic about Alaska, that a lot of things are not. (Mostly I have yet to see anything actually filmed here, they usually go to Canada, eh?) I can’t recall what in particular was wrong about that movie, but if you want to know if that’s what it is like in the boons here..then I’d have to say, Yep, for the most part.

Actually, the movie I thought was the funniest and most excellent caricature of Alaskan life was Snow Dogs with Cuba Gooding Jr. Anyone who has lived with more than a few huskies in the middle of BF nowhere in the Great Land got some good chuckles out of that one. ^_^ Although the ending was completely Hollywood.
I also never saw Northern Exposure, for anyone who is thinking of asking, so I can’t tell you if that one was anything like it here. I did not find Men in Trees to be even remotely accurate, but then I don’t live in Southeast…that’s a whole other animal.

I’ll add that, I don’t think we have 3D or Imax here yet, despite the buildup in Fairbanks. How would one know the difference besides an audience wearing funny sunglasses indoors?

You’d know the difference by the $10+ increase in ticket price for 3D 😛 And IMax is very heavily advertised – you wouldn’t walk into one of their theaters without knowing that’s what it was. I’m lucky that our local aquarium has an IMax. They use it for educational movies a lot, but in the evenings will show one Hollywood movie. They’ve listed Avatar as “coming soon” for about 2 months now, so I’m getting impatient. I think they get the film from another local IMax theater, after they’re done showing it, which is why it takes so long, but also costs half as much to see.

And I was just going to ask if you had seen Nothern Exposure! Haha. I’ve watched the first season (keep meaning to rent the rest) and it’s a great show. From my experiences with far northern Michigan in the boonies (where my dad grew up), it seems fairly realistic. At least the people and the crazy characters kind of remind me of the types of people you find in very cold, very remote places 😛

I’ve always thought that the part of MI my dad is from would be just like Alaska, but without mountains (and a bit more sunlight). I’ll have to visit Alaska some day to find out. MI is the kind of place where you’re going to a party at a relative’s house and your grandma says “Remember that dirt road we passed today? The one 40 minutes from here? Turn down there and you’ll find the cabin.” 😮

OH yeah…that sounds like the regulation farthest north GPS…my town is one of those ‘blink and you miss it’ places. My hubby says it’s not quite the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from here. ^_^
If you do decide to come here, it would likely be in summer…just be sure to bring lots of bug dope. The mosquito is our state bird and a swarm of them will leave your body like a dried husk on the side of the road…they like ‘fresh meat’.
                                  A winter visit? I wouldn’t recommend it. >.<

lol…seriously OT. But to regain the thread… if anyplace in the world is like falling down the rabbit hole, this is it!

The first time I came up here, it was the darkest time of the year between Christmas and new year’s back in 84. Hubby’s dad had invited us up, paid for our trip and everything. Stayed here for two weeks. I got my first taste of -65 F. You’d think I would’ve had the sense to stay away! lol….
