I just picked up Mom’s 9 week old Yorkie today. I have to babysit him until Tuesday and he is being a total brat! At Mom’s he is so quiet and good. Here he is barking and terrorizing my cats (although in his defence he’s never seen cats before).

I hate how he’s barking because my rabbits seem really stressed by it. I have the rabbit room blocked off so he can’t go in there and tonight when they run he will be kicked out of the living room.

Any tips on keeping the stress level low for my rabbits while Riley is here? I used to dog sit all the time for Mom but for her elderly shih-tzu and my buns never even knew she was here.

Here’s a pic of the little 1.5 lb demon

Aww he’s cute! But I know how annoying that incessant barking it. It just gets under your skin. Yorkies and small dogs in general are notorious for being barkers though…. one of the reasons I will never get a small dog. Anyway… aside from that, he’s adorable! Try spritzing him with water from a spray bottle when he’s barking? Or, idk if you want to spend the $ on it, but I’ve seen these citronella bark collars that spray a bit of citronella as a deterrent when the dog barks. I’ve never tried it though. And i wonder if the citronella would be bad for the bunnies….

Maybe he’ll calm down a bit after today since you said you just picked him up.

I am not a fan of small dogs, but my parents got a Yorkie puppy over the summer and he is the complete opposite of the hyper, yappy, small dog stereotype. He’s a total lovebug and very well-behaved. They lucked out with him. He actually looks quite a lot like Riley, he’s very cute!

I would set up a time out for him. Every time he starts barking like a crazy pup, take him by the leash and walk him to a small bathroom. Shut the door, and leave him in there for 30 seconds. If he’s barking in the bathroom, wait until he stops for 3 seconds before letting him out again. This might take you 15-20 tries (he’s very young), but he should get it. I would highly discourage the use of citronella or shock collars.

Okay, well he’s quieted down some. He’s not barking at the cats anymore (just chasing them quietly). He kept us up all night though, he wanted to sleep in the bed with us but we wouldn’t let him because one wrong move and he could get really hurt so he did a lot of whining all night.

I made sure to clean the house really well before he came over because I know puppy’s eat anything and he keeps finding bunny poos and playing with them and putting them in his mouth! I can’t figure out where he is getting all these freakin poos from!

Haha! Just consider him your personal “bunny poop buster”

My dog loves eating the bunny poop, its kind of funny sometimes we put him in the pen to ‘clean up’ and he does a very good job at it!

Lol. Hey, if I had bunnies pooing in my house, I’d love to have a dog to clean them up for me!

I’m glad he’s calmed down! Some puppies are just so rambunctious and it just takes time. My friends have a very nice dog, but when he was a puppy, he was the most annoying thing in the world. You couldn’t sit on the ground without him jumping all over you. Haha. He just had to grow up a bit. Your little guy was probably overstimulated by being in a new house with new animals to smell and chase.

Is he real?! Be careful not to sneeze, he might go flying! He’s the same weight as Monkey (Monkeybun) lol

(Monkeybun, Moose emailed me asking how to go about hiring a hit man who specializes in 1.5 lb. animals. I didn’t know, but suggest he throw pellets, distract it, and run.)

Cute spawn of Satan you have there, LPT.

What a cutie! Glad he calmed down too – probably had to let the initial sensory overload get out of his system.

my dog does this too! I thought she was off her rocker….lol.  In fact, at times I was so excited when willie was being trained and then I realized, darn it- the dog is eating them…..had to really crack down cause I thought willie was all trained.  funny huh!? I wonder why they do that?

Small dogs can be interesting in new places, especially when they are puppies. That is why I highly recommend crate training them. Not only does it keep them off the bed, but when they are put in a new place, the crate can go with them, giving them a sense of security and familiarity, not to mention, with small dogs being difficult to house train, a crate keeps them out of trouble when they are not being watched. Crate=sleep, and that a big help for those who have to babysit, or if the dog goes on travels with the owner!

Small dogs, while fragile, should be expected to have the same level of manners and respect as a large dog. They should enjoy going new places, walk on a leash (though harnesses are recommended so they don’t slip out or hurt their necks), and behave around respectful people (obviously a child pulling the dog’s tail is going to get a reaction).
