Hi, everybody. Sorry I haven’t been around in a while; I have been very, very busy and very stressed out! I just don’t know what to do… I think I might have to give up my sweet babies.

I have been crying over this for days, and I haven’t made a decision yet; but I don’t know if I can take care of Calypso and Echo anymore. It breaks my heart to think about not having my squishy little bunnies slam into my legs every morning because they’re so excited to geta baby carrot. lol

Here is the whole situation: (Sorry if it’s all over the place… that’s just the way my brain has been lately.)

I can’t afford my apartment anymore, so I think I have to get a roommate. My new potential roommate is allergic to all kinds of fur. I had been planning on moving in with my boyfriend, but we broke up, so that’s not happening. In addition, I have no time anymore to spend with Calypso and Echo. I feel terrible that they’re always home alone. As a result, they have become so much more destructive than they ever were before, and have pretty much turned their entire cage into one big littebox.

Also, when I look at the next few years (after graduation), I don’tknow what’s going to happen…I may end upmoving to another country and not be able to take them… it almost seems to make more sense to take the time now to find a good home for them.

But then… I just cry and cry when I think about not having them with me… I love them so much and can’t bear to think about giving them away. I really, really don’t know what to do. It broke my heart when I had to leave Xiao Pang with my friend in China… I hate myself for putting myself a situation like that again. And I feel guilty that I had intended to keep these bunnies for forever and now I don’t know if I actually can… My life has just become so uncertain in the past month. A lot has changed and I really don’t know what to do! I don’t want to give up my sweet babies, but I think that might be the best thing for them.

        Any thoughts are welcome.

          hi Lara,

I am so sorry you are feeling this terrible. Please remember that when you get stressed out things can seem more overwhelming than they actually are.. I hear everything you are saying about the uncertain future you are seeing as a reason for giving up the rabbits, but I would not give up the buns because of some things in the future you can’t even know right now. Deal with the things as they come up in the present. you can’t even know how long they will live for.

Sorry to hear about your boyfriend but hopefully you will be better off without him.

And the roomate situation… do you have to have this particular roomate? you can specify that you are looking for a pet-friendly roomate. There are many people out there who can’t find a place to live because they have a pet, maybe one of those people will be a perfet match for you and your rabbits! Usually it’s the people that have a room for rent that get to call the shots, so you can be choosy!

I know you are afraid to lose your bunnies…. It is a sickening feeling to anticipate having to lose something beloved. Focus on being able to keep them.

Wow, I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I broke up with the bf I was living with and I had two dogs and five ferrets at the time. My dogs are a pit bull and a rottie and it’s really hard to find a place to rent with those breeds. I also have two kids..so I really had my work cut out for me but I did manage to find both a pet friendly roommate and a house that would take my dogs. You can make it work, you just have to calm down and think rationally.

Good luck to you. I hope you’re able to work this out.

I have to agree with the posts already here, Lara…there either have to be other roommates or cheaper apartments you could secure for yourself and your bunnies. Yes, the future is scary but it also hasn’t happened yet and may not, for all we know. One day at a time.
I don’t always get the kind of time I want with my bunnies either, life does get in the way…but when we do get those special moments, they are all the sweeter for it. I think it would devastate me to give up my rabbits (or any of my animal companions for that matter) and I think the first thought that comes to mind is, “How will it affect them to have to acclimate to somebody new and new routines and do I really need to make them adjust when it’s easier for me to change my own lifestyle to be with them?”
The bunnies are not technically alone, they have each other. Their destructiveness may be due to something else altogether, they could be feeling your stress or they could be reacting to less out of cage time, but this is not irreparable. Honestly, my bunnies leave gigantic messes in their pens all the time, I think it’s just because they love to see me slave away to get them clean again! ^_^
You are upset now, and that’s normal and natural. You sound like you’re going through a very hard time. Big decisions are not made best when you are in a highly emotional state. There always has to be that third option that you may not see right now through the tears. Please reconsider and give yourself time to think this out thoroughly for your sake and Calypso and Echo.
We’re here, talk to us! We’d like to help!

Hi Lara, I’m happy to see you posting after your last post (have been wondering how you are). I am sorry though that you are having a tough time.
I do agree, try not to predict too far into the future. Circumstance can change quickly. As you know sometimes they become worse or unstable, but they do also become better quickly also.

Getting a room mate who doesn’t have allergies and even better – likes rabbits, would be a good solution. You get help paying the rent plus you also get someone who may spend time with the bunnies too.

If it is better you go ahead with the room mate with allergies, are you able to to have C & E in just one room? Maybe the bedroom where you would get most interaction with them?

I really, really hope we can help you find a way for this to work. Not just for C&E’s sake but your own. I somehow feel it would be better for you to have them with you. Big HUGS.

Thanks, everybody, for your input! I feel like yesterday was such a stressful day and I was feeling very fatalistic. lol. All of your points are good ones. It can be so hard when you just feel lost and don’t know how to fix a situation. That was definitely me yesterday! I still haven’t made any decisions, which I guess, in other words, is me trying to make sure I get to keep my babies. Things are looking a little less doom and gloom today, but I still have a pickle to sort out. lol

And Jerseygirl, you are so right about it being better for me to keep Calypso and Echo… They have this sixth sense and can detect when I’m down. In response, Calypso becomes like a little monkey, hopping all over me, climbing up my back, lying down beside me. And Echo starts doing the bunny 500 on my bed. lol. They’re just too cute, it’s impossible not to be cheered by them!

Anyway, I have a lot of thinking and sorting out to do. I will keep you all posted.

Bunnies are a lot cheaper than therapy! Hang in there, Lara.

Life does like to throw us curve balls!
Ditto on looking for a “Pet friendly” room mate.

Isn’t it great when pets know how you are feeling and want to help!

                        Keep us posted!

Sleeping on it can make the world of difference.

They have this sixth sense and can detect when I’m down.

Then it is very likely as MM said, they might be picking up on your stress and being destructo because of it. So be good to yourself, or go tear up some cardboard. lol, you never know, you might feel better!

Hoping you’ll find the right solution soon. Keep us up to date please.

Hey, everybody. Just wanted to update you all on what has been happening:

After thinking about giving up my little sweeties, I knew that there was NO WAY I could do it. So, not knowing what to do about money and what-not, I waited. Then, my little sister (who lives about four hours away from me) asked me if I wanted to be her roommate, because she wanted to move to my city! YAY! She loves the bunnies VERY much. So, we’ve found a new apartment with three bedrooms (one for the buns) and are moving in at the end of April. Calypso and Echo seem to be settling down again, too, which is good.

I can’t believe I considered giving them up. I love them so much. What would I do without Calypso using me as a binky launching pad in the middle of the night? And who would I share my bananas with without them? What would I do without little whiskers brushing my face and waking me up when I’m trying to nap on the couch? lol Ah, bunnehs… <3

Lara, I am really happy that things are looking up for you. Sending really positive vibes! How exciting to live with your sister!

I am a bit of a noob, but I too have had moments of intense panic at the thought of losing my baby in the near future due to circumstance. It’s the worst. And when you are at a certain point in your life, when you have no idea where you are heading or what you are going to do, or where the money is going to come from… I feel for you, sister. I really do.

Right now Lemony is spending the night at the vets, he just got neutered. It’s extremely quiet and lonely in the apartment without him – I keep opening the door expecting to see him. It’s amazing how big of a presence such a small lil guy can have.

You guys give really great life advice. So thanks for sharing, everyone. The support here is amazing.

It’s pretty heartening to see what can happen when you trust your instincts. I live with my sister too. It’s just easy with family, having lived together before. I mean, it can have it’s issues but nothing too bad.
It’s uncanny, as last night I was kicking about on BB for ages and I thought of you. I was going to hunt down this thread and PM you to see how things were…Lo & Behold, here you are! Thanks for the update Lara.
