I hope Crayon or one of our other members is out there today and can help. You may all remember my son’s goldfish was ill a while ago and we got him feeling better again. (he’s quite old-so it’s not like we can pull him out of many more scrapes) Well today I changed his water for the second time this week because he is just lying on the bottom of the tank and I notice suddenly that his chin and forefins have red blotchees on them (it’s at the base of the fins) also his gills have some kind of white (?) blotch on them under the skin that makes it look like he swallowed some cotton. He’s not breathing or moving much at all…just laying on his stomach or his side.

I’m worried enough about Mimzy’s dental appointment tomorrow, now this. Can someone who has fish experience help? The online forums are so vague I can’t get a good answer from them.

I just bought a whole box full of ammonia removing charcoal and put it in the filter yesterday, but it didn’t do any good.

One other thing. His filter broke (it’s a Whisper and the waterfall area cracked) this week and my hubby used some silicone to patch it so it wouldn’t leak all over the spot where his tank stands. Could that have leached soemthing into the water? But I keep thinking he was acting like this before that although he did’t seem discolored, thsi had to have just happened int he last 24 hours.

I’ve got just his aerator and 4 clean gallons (no salts) in there now. I don’t dare remount the filter. I have withheld his food for fear the water is too dirty.

I’d hate to lose him. He’s been a good (if troubesome care-wise) fish.

        Thanks!

oh Mimzmum, I’m sorry to hear Simmer passed on. I’ve repaired aquariums with silicon before and didn’t have any problems. It sounds like your fishie had nine lives and a long happy life. We do get attached to them whether it’s fin, feather or fur. RIP Shimmer.

The difficult thing is, I keep thinking I could’ve done something better to help, or could’ve euthanized him instead of letting him suffer, or maybe when I last cleaned his tank I didn’t clean it well enough and something in it poisoned him. (Like Mimzy’s water bottle that may have had soap residue in it before his stasis episode.)
I dunno…you go through the ‘what if’ stage…guess it’s normal. He did live a long time, and I had just bemoaned the fact that some goldfish live to be in their 30’s or more…I was whining about having to be the one doing all the tank cleaning. >.<

Oh, MM, I’m so sorry about Shimmer. what a tough week you and the family are having.

I am certain it was nothing you did to cause it. He had a lovely life with you and you take excellent care of all your babies. He was old.
                      It happens.

He swam under the Rainbow Bridge and is in a lovely pond now.
