I was perusing some local ads – pets and other stuff when I saw this.

Someone is giving away their pet hutch and 2 guinea pigs.  The piggies lost their rabbit friend who died in the heat.  To give you an idea of the heat we are currently experiencing a run of 110F (43-44C) temps. It was similar heat when this ad was posted.  In my house it’s about 86F (30C) and that’s with A/C.  My rabbits are struggling with it.  Imagine what it’s like outdoors for them.  I popped the thermometer outside a few days ago and it shot to it’s limit – so the temp in direct sun is at least 122F (50C) likely more.  Last year in our Feb heat wave pets & people died due to heat stress – I even remember a story of a woman that lost her dog even though she did put him indoors, provided cooling and water.  It’s no wonder that rabbit died. I wonder how piggies go with the heat though?  I feel like sending the poster a descriptive account of how exactly an animal dies due to heat stress.  I won’t though.  I’m sure as a kid our pets were out in hot temps and we were none the wiser. Animals should come with a manual that is a mandatory read.

disgusting. and that siding piece would hold that heat forever. this ‘hutch’ looks like what people put out on garbage day… heap of junk.
Guinea pigs cannot sweat and don’t pant. they are very sensitive to heatstroke also.

That is awful. Just awful. We installed central heat and AC just for the furry kids – unbelievable how people can keep their animals in those conditions. They should go to jail for that. That is just disgusting.

The weather was unbearable this week. We were meant to go away on holidays for a few days, but when we got to the place where we were meant to be staying, it had no air con and a tin roof, and no water at all. It was 47 degrees inside. Carl got heat stroke and we had to go home that night, via the hospital…
Jersey, Do you know where these little piggies are? What suburb? I can take in 2 piggies, but am back at work full time so picking them up depends what suburb they are in

I’ll msg you. The ad was posted jan 3. If someone hasn’t already taken those piggies, I seriously doubt they would have survived this past week.

Hope you got a refund from the place you went to stay at. That sounded awful.

We’ve got the exact opposite here. Temps are forecast to go to 50 below zero Fahrenheit in this next few days. I feel sorry even for the sled dogs who I can hear howling outside my window late at night…it can’t be good for them, though they are supposedly ‘bred’ for this stuff. I’m so glad my only dog is in a heated area these days.
I know there are bunnies out there too. It just cuts me to the heart.
Those poor piggies. Even if the heat didn’t get them, that’s not a safe enough enclosure from predators by any means.

My air con and all my light went off today during the heat and I was running around freaking out, screaming at my mum to make ice bags for the rabbits and telling the eletricity guy on the phone that if someone did not come within the next hour and fit my power then my bunnies would die and i would sue him! Power was back on in about 15 mins but not before of resorted to faning the bunnies (i was over reacting a bit i think maybe)
