My oldest daughter, Amie, NEVER calls me at work.  She texts or emails but does not actually call me on my work phone.  When I saw her phone number show up on Dec. 22 I thought the house must have fallen down or something.

Me:  What’s wrong? (Not “hello” lol)

Amie:  I just got home from school and Amber’s rabbits were sitting in the middle of the hallway!  I tried to catch them but they ran RIGHT under the Christmas tree!

Me:  (laughing) I wonder how long they were out.  Did you try to turn the TV on?  Does it work? (I asked, wondering if they chewed any important cords)

Amie:  Yeah, the TV works but I can’t reach them under the tree!  I don’t know what they’re doing under there, I can’t see them, but the bottom limbs are moving around and the balls are falling off!

Me:  Make sure the tree is unplugged and keep an eye on the TV cords until your sister gets home.  She’ll get them and put them away.

Amie:  Tell your DAUGHTER she needs to be more careful!

        An hour later….

Amber calls me every day as she gets off the bus and walks home (Yes, both of my kids have cell phones BUT we don’t have a land line)

        Amber:  Hi Mom!

Me: Hi there.  I got a call from your sister.  Your rabbits had a party while you were at school today.

Amber:  What do you MEAN they had a party?

Me:  Somehow they got out of their cage and had the run of the downstairs all day.

Amber: thumpthumpthumpthump (running down the street) Ohmygosh!  Are they OK?  They didn’t get hurt or anything did they?

Me:  I think they’re fine but last I heard they were hiding under the tree

        Amber:  I’ll call you back!

        Five minutes later…

Amber: (sounding very relieved) Ozzie and Oliver are back in their cage.  Amie helped me move the tree and they didn’t run from me.

Me:  That’s good.  Did they chew anything up?

Amber:  No.  There’s not even any poop on the floor!  I have such good boys!

Me:  OK.  Make sure you double check their cage door before you leave in the morning so this doesn’t happen again.  Next time we might not be so lucky with the lack of destruction.

Amber:  It’s OK.  I gave them a stern talking to and I don’t think they’ll try to have out of cage time when I’m not home any more.

        The End

For those of you who are wondering about where my dogs were during this episode…one of them spends the work day in my bedroom on the second floor and the other one is crated in the living room.  I’m sure the downstairs dog barked his fool head off but Ozzie and Oliver don’t generally pay him any attention.  They were not in any danger of being dog snax.

lol…Ozzie and Oliver must still be harboring bad feelings about their neuters. ^_^

What a calamity! 0_0 Glad both boys are okay, hopefully they didn’t eat anything to disagree with them. I think I would probaby have a heart attack if I found out by phone that my bunnies had escaped. There is just TOO MUCH in my house that they can get into that would spell disaster for them.

LMAO, my daughter and I were just commenting on this thread, and I got a mental image of the two buns under the tree with one of those old long saws that the lumberjacks used to use and wearing the plaid shirts and toques and pulling the saw back and forth under the tree. Not that they’d need it with their teeth, but..still…funny. ^_^

Oh great, now I’ve got that song about “the perfect tree, we whack-whack-whack!” from that old Muppet Xmas special “Mr Willoughby’s Crhistmas” going through my head…rofl!

                    My daughter’s drawing again….

Petzy, I have two dogs. A pit bull and a rottweiler. People always tell me I’m way too anal about separating all of the animals and crating them when I’m not home. This just goes to show you can never be to careful when it comes to the safety of all of your pets.

Oh are you kidding me? A pit and a rott? Wow! 0_0 Remind me to let you know WAY in advance if I visit! lol….
I love Rotties. If I hadn’t sworn off having any more dogs, I’d seriously consider one. And I think the crating is totally logical, how much easier is it if you have to get them out of there in a hurry? You don’t have to hunt them up and drag them kicking and screaming during a house fire or something else horrible.
That’s something that worries the snot out of me, my cats are all free range (indoors except for Hello Kitty in summer) and my dog is in an enclosed porch…the bunnies getting a quick escape in an emergency is a guarantee, I won’t have to catch them…but the cats are going to take some wrangling. Luckily the dog is such at his age now that I don’t have to worry about him bolting if I just let him loose. In fact, he’d be the first to jump right in the car and want to “go bye-bye”…lol.

If the dogs are happy and still get their exercise time and all that, I think they are safer that way, honestly. My hubby wouldn’t agree, I know, but I am a way overprotective furbaby mom anyway. *shrugs*

Honestly I love my rottie with all my heart and soul…but I have had nothing but problems with all three rotties that I’ve owned. Chuck will be my last one. :0(

When we first came to Alaska our neighbor had a HUGE Rott (named, appropriately enough, Tank) who was the biggest, most lovable teddy bear you could imagine. I had been sitting on this lady’s porch with her, gassbagging, and she went indoors to get us something to drink. Tank had been relegated to the outside of the screened porch and was asking to come back in. Since no one was answering him he vaulted through the screen right above my head (while I bent over to pick something up off the ground at the same time) and this scared the heck out of my friend, who came running out to see if the dog had actually bowled me over. We laughed about it afterwards.
She had five kids at the time and many friends would come over and bring their kids as well…it was a full house everyday it seemed. This dog was terribly protective of them and never hurt any of them, but one of the adults who was over visiting a few weeks after that must’ve set off his radar and he bit this person. So for fear that he might then continue biting, and maybe one of the kids, she had him put down. It was the saddest thing and I cried over him for quite a while because I’d thought he was a lovely creature.
Lots of dogs have problems like this. Whether due to (in)breeding or abuse…it’s not their fault of course, but they are the ones who pay the ultimate price.

Unfortunately he was a guardian breed and he did what he thought he needed to do to protect his family. Chuck is exactly like that. We very rarely have guests because he WILL bite them. He doesn’t get snarly with all strangers and there are people that he’s fine with…but it’s my job as his owner to keep people safe from my dog and I take that very seriously. He came to me already “broken” but as he’s gotten older his distrust of strangers has gotten worse. He’s perfect with me and the girls and if you could be a fly on the wall at our house you would be amazed at how gentle he is with us if you’ve ever seen him lose his head during a stressful situation. This is why he’s crated and not just separated downstairs while we’re out. The girls are home alone for a couple of hours in the afternoon and I will not take a chance that something could set him off and they would try to handle him and get hurt in that process. I almost had him put down because of his temperament but the girls called a family meeting, which we never had before or since and they said they would do anything to keep him. I told them he has to be crated and if I ever come home and find him loose in the house I will have no choice but to have him PTS. They have followed my instructions to the letter for over a year.

My last Rottie bit me in the leg. It was a very serious bite, it took months to heal so I could walk right, and I had her put down.

I’d be scared to have a dog around my 2, Moose is already scared as it is when we come back from visiting the hubby’s mom, and have the smell of her dog on us. It freaks poor Moosey man out. Actually seeing a dog would probably scare him to death. I’m convinced he had a bad experience with a dog with how he reacts to the dog scent, before he was rescued. Poor baby.
