I was looking through some photos tonight and realized that all my bunnies except one have long whiskers and grandpa eyelashes/brows….except Lola. She’s almost cleanshaven and I never noticed it before.

I blew the photos way up and could see very faint cheek wisps but that’s all. Are all rexes like this? She’s lost enough weight so that I’m beginning to see the ‘deer’ shaped face I’ve seen on the other rexes here. Here’s Lola.

Awww she has no whiskers because she’s a dainty little lady!!

Leroy has pretty sparse whiskers and he’s a rex. When I adopted him though, he had no whiskers at all! He had been rubbing his face on the cage door and poking his nose through the bars, so he rubbed his whiskers all off!!! I adopted him in July, so I’m surprised his whiskers have taken this long to grow back in, they’re really short, and all wrinkled and going in all different directions, like he’s been smooshing them while he’s sleeping or something Though… I think he hasn’t grown completely out of his habit of trying to push his way through the cage bars

Well, I know that rexes have curly whiskers – it’s actually a breed trait.  Maybe they are also more fragile?

I thought I had remembered reading about the curly whiskers on rexes here somewhere. Pringles and Daisy have such long heavy whiskers and eyebrows they look like catfish!

I think I’ll do some reading on the rex and see

Hmmm… I didn’t know that about rex bunnies, but I do know there are cats that have curly hair, and some are called rexes… like the Cornish Rex. I have noticed that when Leroy’s fur gets damp – like when I’m using a damp washcloth to spot clean or wet hands to get rid of shedding fur – that the damp fur gets kind of wavy.

                So I did some research..

http://www.zoo-zoom.com/Rex%20Rabbits.htm  This site is about the rex rabbit… I only read the first couple paragrahps, so idk if in the rest of the article, they give bad bunny advice

“The breed was named after the rex gene which has caused the rabbit’s whiskers and eyebrows to be curly. While the coat is generally too short to show curling, some longer areas such as behind the head may be crimped”

                Also… http://www.messybeast.com/curly-cats-rex.htm

“Curly coated cats are know as Rexes after the Rex type of rabbit.

And did you know there are rex rats?!?!  This article kinda makes me want one…   http://www.discover-pet-rats.com/rex-rats.html

that’s an interesting article, I’ve noticed when Lola’s hair gets wet (like a butt bath) or she’s grooming it does look wavy. I want to read the rest of it later today, thanks!

I have a white rex as well (standard though and not dainty in the least) and her whiskers are curly – not sure about eyelashes though….she has big red eyes and that’s all I see.

I saw the title of this and suddenly had “Raindrops on roses…” etc. running through my head. lol
What a gorgeous face! How do you get anything done during the day? I would just sit there and stare at that cuteness till my teeth fell out, again.

Yes, that’s exactly what someone said about Fiver (mini-rex) when I first posted about him, that he looked like a deer. And he has some lovely black eyelashes and the cute curly whiskers. Pip (half lionhead/palmino) has some beauties too, but her whiskers are paled by her moustache fur. Mimzy (Holland lop) you can hardly see his eyelashes at all unless you go in close, but his whiskers are a prominent feature. I’ve gotten into a strange OCD habit of collecting the ones I find on the pen floor and dating when they dropped. (very odd scrapbook material, which I’ll probably end up tossing out at some point…lol)

For those who have bunnies with whiskers, btw, do any of you ever notice that they tend to split at the ends like human hair? For a long time Mimzy had this problem and then it abruptly stopped and his whiskers don’t split anymore. I wonder what changed to make that stop? Diet? Environmental? Stress level? Or maybe just as he aged something changed in him chemically? I’d be interested to know if anyone else ever had this problem.

Hehe I found one of Monkey’s whiskers a couple weeks back, and it has the proud place of honor on my desk in front of my monitor where I can see it and giggle

Lash (4/1991 – 7/1998) and me, so-named Lash because the first thing I ever remembered noticing about her were her long black eyelashes.  She was a Netherland Dwarf and would “come” to her name being called and “Bananas!” (her favorite, but I probably overindulged her on those, looking back).  On her first checkup at the vet, the vet told me I wouldn’t have her past 5 years, she lived to be 7 years, 4 months til she passed away on the operating table from a severed vein while trying to remove a tumor in her reproductive organs (maybe would have lived even longer if she had been spayed).  I loved her long black lashes and everything about her and our lives together.

Lol Monkey and MM… I was thinking about trying to save some of Teddy’s (parent’s dog) and some of Leroy’s whiskers…. problem is I haven’t found any shed ones….. *pulls out the tweezers… shifty eyes* hehehe. Just kidding, I wouldn’t =P

Said it before, and I’ll say it again…Leroy is just sooooo precious in his little Santa hat with his wittle feet.
And Lola looks so beautiful and cottony soft!
And Princess Ruby and Cotton are just adorable, too!

kralspace, I was told he was a full mini rex when I adpoted him. I’m not sure exactly what he is. He does have rex fur, but he’s a little too big to be a mini rex, but too small to be a standard rex.

I got this pic of Dexter’s whiskers and eyebrows. When we first got him his whiskers were shorter but they have grown out now. Every once in a while I will find one or two REALLY long kinky ones

Thank you, kralspace, Lash was ever-vigilant through her large eyes…but there was a lot of love coming through them as well.

I love that picture of Dexter in his tunnel, reminds me of the cozy way Buddie gets in his tunnel bed.

It is possible that Leroy is half and half, standard and mini.

Neigey is pure mini rex, curly lashes and curly whiskers.

Lint is pure mini rex, but has no lashes or whiskers.

aaahhh, my goal to get so many soft plushie bunny photos on one thread is coming true! (evil grin) they look like such soft stuffies

I love the profile shots, you can see how their heads look longer and ‘deerlike’ compared to my others, especially my dutch boy’s round face.

hahah Dexter is the perfect grumpy old man with catfish whiskers I was thinking about!

I wonder if Lola’s husbun, Daisy has groomed them off. He’s always been an obsessive harestylist when it comes to his mates. Lola has a small tan spot around her eye and he drove her crazy at first trying to ‘clean it off’ for her. Got him nipped and ripped into more than once. If they are fragile and curly, he may be keeping them clipped to the skin. That or Lola is waxing when I’m not watching 😉

Stormy has the standard rex whiskers which I think are very adorable. Bindi has lots of thicker, long whiskers, more like a cat (and yes, Mimzmum, they do split sometimes and I just want to cut them but I don’t!). Olivia has beautiful full eyelashes…every bit the lady.

BT, Mimzy used to leave a lot of whiskers for me. I’d just find them on his pen floor or shelf. I haven’t collected any lately because I’m trying to keep his pen uber clean, so I think I just throw them out (like a normal person would) now. (Everyone in my family thinks I’m psycho for keeping whiskers, but I do this with my cats too when I find them. I also have three of Griff’s baby teeth from when he shed them.)

I do the same thing with the whisker ends that seem like something sticky is in their fur. Of course when you pull on it and it doesn’t come out and you get stink eye for a few hours, you get the message. ~_~

I was trying to remove some of his shedding fur, and this was the first time I saw his fur get all wavy like that so I happened to take a picture!  (I had to bribe him with dinner to get him to sit still for me to get the loose fur though!)

I thought I was through grieving Lash but I’ve realized now with the posting of this picture here, that, no, I’m still melancholy over her. Buddie is a whole other ballgame with his own agenda, which he’s bringing to my attention constantly. He does seem to enjoy petting and massages. I don’t know if ‘love” has entered the picture yet. I wish his pen was bigger, with all his toys and funiture, there’s barely room for me to sit down let alone lie down.

I love your “plushie,”‘s blaze, Barbie!

Some pets/friends that have left us we never get over. I still think of my husband’s cat (black Persian) who I absolutely adored who’s been gone 15 years now. My own Siamese cat that I lost when I was 20, she often comes to me in my dreams and when I wake up I feel like she’s died all over again. It’s hard, we recognize true and unconditional love and we all gravitate to it and want it to be with us forever. And as long as we can feel these feelings, I would guess that’s what tells us it really does go on forever.
I simply don’t know how I will feel when any of my bunnies cross the bridge…but especially Mimzy, who was my first and will always be my dearest. (his picture is in my avatar)

OMG, Barbie…what a cutie that Leroy is! xD I love that full face pic of him, it’s just tickles me…very uplifting! And as far as the wavy fur is concerned, Fiver’s has been like that since his first shed…it’s really nappy in some places, to the point that I questioned it so much here, bunnytowne showed me a site on the “Astrex” breed, which is like the rex but with wavy fur all over. I have to wonder if he is one. I’ll have to see if I can find the link.

Petzy, Lint is gorgeous! 0_0 I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of him before!

I wish I had left room in Buddie’s pen for me to sit and lie down so I could give him the opportunity to crawl over me. With all the tunnels winding through his pen, it looks like a bunny warren that’s had the dirt excavated from it! Thanks everybody for your kind and soothing words about Lash’s looks. Bunnies are so cute, one can hardly stand it!

Pookie my dwarf is the only one w/ whiskers and no eyelashes. Cooper my mini lop has neither and Hoopie my youngest mini rex has eyelashes but no whiskers.

I thought i remembered reading somewhere that the whiskers for buns are just like cats in that they are used to feel things around their face. So buns digging burrows would feel with their whiskers. But once they no longer use the whiskers they fall out? Im not sure where I read or heard that??

After reading this thread, I realized I didn’t have any close up pictures of Arduina!  She is 7/8 reg rex and 1/8 dutch, I don’t notice any of the dutch in her.

So, last night we did a photo shoot, and I got one of her curly-Qs.  They seem to fall in her eyes, which of course I worry about.

You can kinda see a couple of long curly hairs on the right side of her face.

Her whiskers are funny too -some are black and some a white.

I guess the vet was referring to her breed’s (Netherland Dwarf) average life span so I wouldn’t be disappointed if she passed away after around 5 years. I think due to my spoiling her and pampering her she lived to prove the vet wrong. I’m so glad. Her whole life she was a joy to me. Looking back, I probably fed her too much fresh fruit like bananas (she’d come galloping across the room when I called out, “Lash – bananas!” apple and carrots mostly. Carrots aren’t a fruit but from what I’ve learned, I should have just given her small pieces infrequently. It’s such a pleasure to watch bunnies scarf down treats.
