Who’s the bunny that started it all? That special bunny who introduced you to this wonderful life of bunny slavery? The bunny who taught you that your daily goal should be to please bunny and avoid disapproval at all cost? Who is that adorable little guy or gal who made you first fall in love with bunnies? Who’s your “Original” Rabbit?  Post a pic with a name! (If it’s a bunny you had a long time ago and don’t have a pic just tell us what he/she looked like so we can visualize!).

        MY ORIGINAL RABBIT….(drumroll…..brrrrrtttt….brrrrrtttttt….brrrttttttttt)

My blessed Mimzy, of course! ^_^

Who could resist that face? All he has to do is sneeze and whatever it is he wants, I’m all over it! (and usually his goobers are too….eeeewww!)

Oh, man, now you’ve got me thinking about the very MOMENT I became a bunny slave… walking along in a market in China, looking for a pet kitten. Then, I see a row of little cages with TINY bunnies in them. I zeroed in on one little ball of fur in a little pink cage, with the sweetest little face I’d ever seen in my life… my baby, Xiao Pang. From then on, I was hooked!

              I don’t have a picture or remember a name.

A sweet little girl asked me if I wanted to hold her bunny when I was doing the, “AWWWW” thing. She passed it to me & started to say, “You can only hold her for a minute because bunnies can get scared & have heart att…. (just then the bunny snuggled farther up under my chin, nosing my chin & hair)….. oh never mind she likes you. You can hold her for as long as you want.” I melted when that jet black lop snuggled me like that & had wanted a bunny ever after that.

It was almost 10 years later that Bugsy stole my heart, in a very similar fashion.

Oh, Furface, now you’ve got me remembering! Xiao Pang always used to snuggle up under my chin. I always forget about that because I’m so used to Calypso and Echo now, who only like to snuggle with four feet firmly planted on the floor. I miss those days of my Xiao Pang stretched out on my chest, tooth purring like there’s no tomorrow.

We had a giant rabbit that we rescued from a breeder in the hills here that breeds for pets, and for the pot. This one was being sold as a meat rabbit. He was HUGE and so friendly. We named him Edward. He was white with red eyes.
                        RIP my beautiful edward.

When I was 11 I got my first rabbit. Bugs was a mini lop with a broken gray pattern. I got Cotton, an albino mini lop, not long after as his companion. Then I had Sylvester (black and white spotted uppy ear) and Tweety (yellow uppy ear). Poor little buns.
11 years later came Peepi and Warri, who rekindled my love of bunnies.

In high school I had an awesome teacher, she was sort of a role model to me. Always sweet, understanding, happy and such a blast. She always said the love of her life was her bun, Copter. She talked about him all the time and Copter would come to school for the day sometimes and hop around the classroom. Thats when I started to want a bun. When my teacher died and they started looking for a home for Copter I started researcher rabbits. I didnt get Copter, but decided I wanted to figure out why she loved Copter so much. So the bun that opened my eyes was Copter, and Hammer came a little after that.

I  like this thread theme LPT   Bunnyliz, I love what you wrote.  It’s like a tribute to that teacher – you being a bunny slave now.

Well….going back to sept/oct 2007 I found a REW on the corner of my street one night.  He looked a lot like this pic (a cashmere lop – though I’m not sure he was a cashmere)

He didn’t seem to see very well but he came toward me and I had no trouble picking him up.  I took him home and set him up in my living room.  It was the safest place and I didn’t want anything to happen to him while in my care.  I bought supermarket food mix and fed it bits of cabbage I think.  During the day I put him out on the grass in a chicken wire pen I made.  I enjoyed watching him and looked for some info fast to find out what they needed.  No mention of hay!  I think I learnt rabbits eat their droppings and about dry baths.  He had grease spots on him and I wanted to clean him up a bit.

I posted signs locally and 3 days later took him home (carried him) after someone responded.  Turned out he was from the house where I found him on the kerb and he was a repeat escaper.  His name was Twinkles.

He was sweet…..but I wasn’t rushing out to get a rabbit or anything.  Forward a month or so and I was in a pet store buying a trinket gift when BANG.  This face…

This spunky little brown eyed rabbit caught me.  The enclosure was a table covered in hay with a low, solid fence around it.  It enclosed big cashmere lop rabbits like Twinkles, black mostly, that were all snoozing.  There was also a handful of piggies gathered around bowl of huge pellets.  But Jersey was at the other end stretching up and trying to look over the barricade. Couldn’t take my eyes of her.  Total impulse buy.  Twinkles was sweet and deserves a mention here but Jersey is the true rabbit that made me a slave (2 years today, 29 Nov).

                                  Aw….those are sweet stories.

I don’t have a really neat story with Stormy. My bf and I were thinking about getting a dog in addition to the four cats we had. After a lot of thought, we decided against it because we didn’t want to stress out the cats by adding a dog. My bf knew I had guinea pigs as a teenager and, seeing how upset I was we weren’t getting a dog, offered to buy me as many piggies as I wanted. I decided I wanted to get a rabbit because I always loved them and never had one as a pet.

A few days later, while on my lunchbreak, I went to a pet store (I know…this is before I knew all I know now…) and there were 3 baby buns. So, after work, I brought my bf to get one (not knowing how I would pick just one) and there was only one left; Stormy…I had no idea how much he would transform my life (and my wallet). I really didn’t know much about rabbits and how fun and unique they can be. After that, I was hooked. That little harlequin Mini-Rex really suckered me in with those big brown eyes…He stole a piece of my heart that day and never let go…

The one who started it all for me was Davey.

                                    I couldn’t resist him.

He’s almost two years old now…

Aw those are all great stories!

Well my “original” bunny was when I was 11 years old.  I always wanted a pet and I convinced my parents I was responsible enough and I would look after a pet.  They didn’t want a dog running around the house and we couldn’t get a cat, so I figured out that a rabbit might be nice to have.  I bought several books (this was before the internet, and in 1996 so those books aren’t any good nowadays), highlighted the important stuff and read them all the way through.  My dad took me to Petland in our mall and I looked at the bunnies.  There were a bunch in the little pen but one ilttle gray one was sitting in the corner alone from the rest.  I told him I wanted him, he was adorable!  They put him in a cardboard box with a yellow blanket and we loaded him into the van.  My dad asked what I was going to name him and I felt the need to hurry and name him at that moment.  For some reason Mickey came into mind.  Maybe Mickey Mouse popped into my head or something…  He lived in our basement in a wired cage (I know I know but it was back when and I feel bad about that now).  We added a second story because I felt he needed more room.  We also had a light  above his cage that was on a timer so he wouldn’t be in the dark all the time.  My dad would clean his cage and we’d all feed him.  I would bring him up stairs to run around for an hour or two.  He was never neutered (which back then they never stressed how necessary it was), he used his litter box well and would run circles around me   When I got married he stayed with my parents who took care of him and I’d come and visit him.  He really helped me see how great bunnies are.  I felt so guilty when I adopted Archie because Mickey was still at home (I felt he was too old to be in a different environment), but learning from my mistakes with wire cages, pine bedding, junky unlimited pellets and only a little bit of lettuce….Archie helped me be a better bunny mom and showed my husband how great bunnies are!

Here’s a pic of him from X-mas 2006 …I don’t have to many.  He was probably a little bigger than Monkey.  They said he was a dwarf.  We had to put him to sleep April of this year   He would have been 13 years old in Aug.

I’ve only been a bunny slave for 8 months, so Otto is my first and only bun. I really wanted a dog, but we’re renting and can’t have a dog (plus I traveled for work all the time and hubby couldn’t do all the work himself). I’m very allergic to cats (and we don’t really like cats) so I somehow settled on bunnies. I’ve had gerbils forever, but they’re just not very snuggly and I wanted something I could pet. After a month or so of convincing hubby, he said I could get a bunny on my birthday in February. A few months later we had everything set up and brought little Otto home  I love him so much and he’s only the first of many bunnies to come. He’s totally changed our lives for the better and I don’t know what we did without him.

                                          Suffer my telling this story…

Growing up I was in charge of feeding the animals on a farm I spent my summers on. They raised rabbits for meat. The rabbits were big, black and white ones with regular fur, and there was one pair that was German angora. They were living in little, filthy hutches beside the cow barn. I felt very hopeless for them and I always wanted to steal one to save it. I never did because I would not have been allowed to keep it.

The worst part was that my work of feeding these people’s animals was ‘rewarded’ with …products from them — pelts. I remember having the pelts and crying into them thinking how dead they felt. Over time the hairs came out from the pelts and I believed this to be a sign from the rabbits’ vexed spirits (my  imagination).

My love for rabbits comes from the pain I felt for these rabbits.

I always thought it would be so much more humane to just collect angora fibers from live rabbits than to slaughter for pelts; but then I learnt about the sad life of angora rabbits that spend a life time in little cages so not to soil their coats. I realized that any rabbit used for profit is an unhappy one.

At this point all things rabbit were a grief to me. I had my dogs and I didn’t think I would be a good home for a rabbit. But I talked about rabbits much to tell people and collected pictures and facts.

Then my friend found Lint. I was pursuaded to foster him … forever.

                                          (Today I have 4 rabbits )

                                          here is Lint

Aww, Petzy, that’s such a sad story! I was such a softie for animals when I was a kid – I’m sure I would’ve had a meltdown if I had to feed rabbits meant for pelts and meat.

Cotton was the one that started “the madness” for me.   I was in a petstore to buy chews for our dogs- and I happened to walk by the small animals- and saw her face.  It was love at first sight- and I have seen many, many bunnies in pet stores, at least 2 had been dumped at our vet clinic before I got Cotton, I had caught one in my backyard, wtc- and I had not wanted a bunny.  I would have had 10 reasons why I did not even WANT a house bunny before I walked into the petstore.

But I was stopped in my tracks when I saw her- I told my husband to come look at her- and her beautiful face.  The employee came over and asked it I had any questions- I asked if it was a boy or girl (and in that moment decided I wanted a girl)- and she said ”she is a girl, would you like to hold her?”   It was just something that was meant to be.  I never knew that bunnies could be so goofy, adorable, frustrating, diva-like and yet an absolute joy to own.

Here is her royal highness who is not afraid to conk out whenever and whereever she likes- that is Schroeder in the background that is awake and watching me and the camera.

She has always slept like this and I used to wake her up to make sure she was still alive!!!!

Coco, of course. Our upstairs neighbors ( we are in a duplex) had found her on the street…they took her in, but kept her in the basement in the dark. We must have lived here for about 9 months before I realized she was down there. Once I did, I couldn’t leave her alone. Within a month, I had simply Taken her from the basement and installed her in our bedroom.

They know I have her – and have never asked me any questions. I assume they know they were neglecting her…

I am amazed that she has such a sweet disposition – friendly and not hostile to humans at all.  By rights, she could have been a real wench – after being kept in the dark in the back of a basement in Montreal. It did take her a while to figure out how to fully Hop, though. She was really reluctant to leave her cage for awhile. It may have taken her a good two weeks before she hopped out of the cage on her own.

Here she is, enjoying the sunlight a couple of weeks ago.

My mom got me Orangina, a cute little dwarf, from a breeder. She was an outdoor rabbit, but always kept in a cage unlike the other rabbits that my mom had (and she had a lot, though most were spayed and neutered). I think she might have originally been bought as a start for me to join 4-H and become a breeder, but that never panned out and she was eventually spayed and kept with a neutered male (a dwarf mix). She came from special lines or something, and was the pick of her litter because of her beautiful color. I don’t know how old she is in this picture, but she was quite old and blind (hence the weird eye color). Even though she was an outside rabbit, she was seen by a vet a couple of times, including when she started going blind. Unfortunately the vet said it was not curable, but she got antibiotics to prevent it from becoming dangerous. I was 12 when this picture was taken, so I obviously didn’t really take care of her that much, but she had a lot to do with my loving rabbits (though my mom’s other rabbits helped too). I actually think that if my mom didn’t have those other rabbits, and I didn’t spend hours trying to catch them then I wouldn’t have had a chance at catching Nova.

                                                      Orangina

Frappucino…Mimzy is a sooty fawn holland lop mix. I can’t get over how much mrmac’s Davey looks like him, except that his ears don’t lop like Mimzy’s. But when Mimzy first came to me, his ears stood up like that.

Jerz….OMG how cute is that baby pic of Jersey! 0_0

You guys all have such heartwarming (and in some cases heart wrenching) stories. Mimzy just showed up at my hubby’s work with two REW’s and we decided to catch them all because we knew winter (and predators) would kill them. I never thought I’d be bringing Mimzy home, but he became our first house bunny even without me asking. (My guess is, the hubby liked him a lot too. We thought he was a she at first and so that made him seem that much more helpless and in need of a home.)
I do sometimes wish we lived somewhere that I could take him outside for more often than just three months per year, since despite his obvious comfort living indoors, he seems to really miss being outside. He had more room for one thing, and lots of fresh living grass to play in. But when I think of all the creatures that could get at him out there….yeah, he’s better off indoors, and I just have to bring the outside to him as often as I can.

My other two have no interest in the wide world. They are strictly housebound. And all three are supremely spoiled. Which is as it should be.

Charlie immediately became the love of my life when I saw him neglected in a pet store. I picked him up and he snuggled into me and I couldn’t put him down. I still remember when we got him home, he was binkying and we thought he was having a fit or something! He was just so happy to have a new home. He’s so spunky and cool, and I miss him every single day while he’s so far away from me.
Layla was spotted at the rescue and we knew straight away that she was a perfect match for our family. She’s a little diva and Charlie loves her beyond imagination.

I had a rabbit when I was younger named “Rick-a-shay Rabbit” I believe that was a cartoon rabbit that I liked? I think he was a cowboy or something. Or maybe that was a cartoon my mom watched and she liked it when she was little. I hardly have anymore memories of him it was so long ago, I must have been 5 years old. Actually…he was the rabbit I had in the front basket of my bike and I crashed into some bushes and he ran off into them. The next day we found him across the street eating the neihbors flowers. It was junipers…and a ton of them. They are very thick plants and he wouldnt come out. It was like a 10 foot by 10 foot chunk of them. OMG I can’t believe I crashed my bike with him. (He was fine) I remember he was solid orangie-brown and a big boy. I do recall taking him on walks in the backyard and him being interested in a desert tortoise we had roaming around. Ha. He was really neat.

You all have lovely stories about your first bunnies, very enjoyable to read And I love the baby photos! Awesome!

                                                              I don’t have a picture.

My best friend has a few rabbits I never interacted with them. But she has one bunny who has free reign of her house his name is Cupid a huge (now) solid white Flemmie. He was a huge baby as well and he just flopped over in my lap like a big puppy I was instantly in love. This is someone who has always been afraid of rabbits hearing stories of them being evil and biting you and gross and all that. But Cupid changed all that he was the biggest baby I had ever seen in my life I wanted a flemmie so bad but I knew my family would flip out if I brought one home lol.

Cupid was my original rabbit into bunny slavery

Mimzmum, I would venture to guess that Mimzy is a purebred holland. His body type looks exactly like Otto’s and he has the same adorable smushy face (not to mention that color, also called black tortoise, is probably the most common holland color). It’s so sad that someone could breed him, probably on purpose, and then dump him out into the Alaskan cold 🙁

                                                                  GREAT thread idea

Well the original original was not mine. He/she was in a petstore and I was 12 or so and he was now what I know to be a dwarf hotot. He could fit in my hand and he cuddled right under my chin and kissed me. I already had a dog and four gp’s and even though my grandmother (which made it more upsetting of course) offered to buy him for me and was trying to convince my mom for me-we didn’t get him. I was absolutely crushed

I guess my next orignal was my friend’s rabbit, Melvin, who became Melly when she went in for a spay. She was also found to be completely blind (REW) but you couldn’t tell (reminds me of someone )-she was a cool rabbit-very independant and not at all what I’d seen of rabbits. She did what she wanted, was free range and very fun to watch.

But Kokanee-well she was MY original rabbit. I was not planning on getting a rabbit or any pet that day. We were actually driving around looking at trucks for Dave’s newest vehicle. I made him stop at a petstore, I wanted to get a toy for Mandy who had been diagnosed with cancer (my parents/family dog) and I picked out a toy for her and then said ‘lets just check out what pets they have here’ -I do like looking at animals but generally won’t spend money in stores that sell them.

Well there were many rabbits but two dutch rabbits (only knew what they were b/c they were labelled as such) were in the open tanks-so I picked her and her brother up many times and really fell for her. She was sooo cool-not scared at all, didn’t mind being held and really really interested in everything. Her brother had what I later learned was perfect markings but I liked her asymmetry too…

So I called my parents. I was old enough and lived on my own-but couldn’t afford high vet bills so I need their blessing. My mom said it was a bad idea and not to do it. But she didn’t freak out-so that’s a yes

So I raced thru the store getting a starter pack and the clerk who I later learned was quite versed-said to me to buy toys and hay as they needed those-I was shocked they liked toys-but he insisted on me buying this toy carrot and said she would love throwing it (which she did).

When I finally got to the till with her in a box and my purchases I was in a frenzy of excitement. She was in a frenzy in the box. Dave joked I was spending 200$ on a noisy cardboard box LOL

We got her home and let her run around-she acted like she owned the place-and she did. She stole our hearts

Aw…such sweet bebe picture of Kokanee! ^_^
I have never really understood the draw of the dutch (or the REW either) until I came here. Neither did I realize all the different shades and types of bunnies. But for me, Mimzy is the quintessential bunny. When I think bunny, I think lop…brown…simple…goofy…adorable.
Yes Elrohwen, I don’t understand it either. We don’t believe the breeder dropped him, but some folks who had been at my hubby’s business a few days before and spoke of leaving Alaska. We think they left the three bunnies there feeling that he was a nice enough person to take care of them, and they didn’t want the responsibility of moving them across state lines.
I thought maybe he wasn’t pure, and that might be a reason for abandoning him too. Either way, it was their loss and my gain.
We do believe the breeder is somewhere nearby though, because we know some folks who have more bunnies that look just like Mimzy. So my greatest fear is that there will be more Holland lops dropped off around here in the future. Very sad.
