Many of us have seen how quickly little buns jump in size in the first few months, but when do they actually stop growing and reach full size? Felony just turned 3 and I swear he’s so much bigger than he was when he was 2…

I think their body shape changes more than they grow. When they are young they are leaner and when they are older they fill out more.

That sounds like a really nice way of saying they get old and fat. I know a lot of humans who “fill out more” as they get older.

lol. I thought the same thing! Though I think it is true. I mean, my mom likes her rabbits F-A-T, like land seals, so I am no stranger to what a fat rabbit looks like. I think that often times it has to do with not cutting out enough pellets (which they don’t really need after a certain age if you can provide them with the right veggies/hay). Not to mention, those rabbits who have free range for a good amount of time (say, 9-12 hours or more) do still fill out, but in a different way than those who are mostly caged. I also think the spneuter does a lot too. It really does change the metabolism, and activity level. Though my mom’s rabbits have a very large enclosure (think room) that they are in 24/7, with levels, and all sorts of things and they are still the fattest things I have ever seen. So my guess is that is has more to do with the spneuter and diet than age. Younger rabbits just haven’t had a change to gain all that weight, as it does take some time.

Well actually they do fill out and when they get older then they start losing their body tone (muscle) – you have to remember that rabbits just age so quickly.

I don’t know that I would say fat but remember rabbits are bottom heavy – it’s just the way they are built.

As you know old people usually lose their body tone too as they age – that’s just a fact of life.

Never. They never stop growing. I have a 12 year old rabbit that’s six foot five. He wears my brother’s clothes and has to sleep standing up in the closet.

So now I’m imagining a 12 foot long, one ton rabbit that is super fat and does nothing all day. Comparing rabbits to seals will at least make for some interesting dreams, thanks for a laugh.

At Monkey’s teeny size it would take her about 87 years to get that big. Leave it.

Seriously, Hooty, they tend to be full grown and full girth but not unhealthy at about 2 years old. The tricky part depends on where you got your bunny and how much you know about it. If a shelter, or an unscrupulous or just dumb seller, turns out to have given you a breed that runs large, you could be surprised. I am noticing Samantha is sleek, but still growing. If she turns out to be part Rhinelander after all, she could be BIG.

Wait and see. They’ve stopped when they ask for the car keys.

I’m serious… He’s turned into a chunker. I can still feel his ribs and so he doesn’t seem overweight… Maybe he’s just super bottom heavy like his momma, that or the boyf sneaks him treats behind my back all day…

Really the best way to judge is to weigh him. All rabbits are appear bottom heavy because of their hind legs and big back feet.

Felony looks pretty darn furry too so maybe that’s a bit deceiving.

pinky is a solid girl too. from what my vet says, she shouldn’t gain any more weight since her last checkup… she was almost 2 yrs old then and 9.5 lbs. i think sarita is right… their bodies shape shift a little as they age. babybun’s figure got squishier and her fur rumplier but she never grew longer or bigger foots in her 9yrs

according to my vet, rabbits are overweight if you can feel along their ribs and then their belly is even with or protruding wider than the ribs. a rabbit’s belly at healthy weight should dip in slightly past the ribs.
