I think I read that some of you are vet techs and I had some questions.  I trust you guys and know that I will get some good answers here   I don’t know how to word this but here it goes.  I am interested in becoming a vet tech but I do not have any experience in working in a vet’s office.  I do have a ton of personal experience caring for all different kinds of animals.  I know there are schools to learn the trade but the closest one from me is 2 hours away   I was told that you can work your way up but won’t be licensed.  I don’t mind starting as a kennel assistant but when talking to vets what should I apply for or ask?  Any suggestions, ideas, or information would be great.   I hope this is ok to post here, if not I will understand.

Thanks so much and Dexter says hi too

I’m no help probably but I heard that too-that you can work up to it. (Like a lot of vets volunteered there, then got hired as assistants, worked up to tech job though not certified then went to vet school etc.)

I hope this is ok to post here, if not I will understand.

I think this is totally fine to ask

Like, KK, I don’t have any personal experience, since I’m not a vet tech, but I think it’s perfectly acceptable to ask your vet. I’ve talked to my vet on multiple occasions about going to vet school and he doesn’t mind at help helping me out. If you don’t feel comfortable enough to ask your vet, start volunteering there and get to know the staff and the vet(s) on a more personal level and then ask (also, volunteering helps get you in the door with the clinc )

you can definitely work your way up to it. my sister graduated in animal science and worked as a vet tech for a few years, but they hired plenty of people that had no experience with animals, vets, or schooling in the field. i think it’s all about how willing you are to learn and how hard you’re willing to work. i would just keep your eyes peeled for positions and see if you can get your foot in the door and work your way up.

thanks so much for the advice I will see about volunteering at my vet’s office, I really don’t mind starting from the bottom and working really hard for this so hopefully I can get my foot in the door somewhere.

That’s the big thing I’ve found-getting your foot in the door. It really helps if you know someone. I’d totally talk to your vet first-and even just offer to clean kennels so they’d just take you-then you can expand from there
