I got a call from Mary Ellen earlier today about those gorgeous agouti boys that my dauther is in love with.  She knows I’ve been toying with the idea of adopting them but resisting because I want my personal animal numbers to go down before I bring anyone else in.

Oliver and Ozzie are starting to behave negatively.  They used to be 100% with litter habits and never chewed anything.  Now they’re pooping outside of their box, chewing parts of the cage, and digging at their rugs.

Mary Ellen offered me an option that’s a little hard to refuse.  She will allow my 11 year old to adopt them, work with me on the adoption fee, and if Amber continues to volunteer every other weekend like she has been for months…Mary Ellen will “pay her” with pellets and hay.  That way the boys wouldn’t be costing me anything but greens.  And the adoption fee, which I can pay over time.

Amber has been begging me to let her adopt them since they left our house (we fostered them for 2 weeks when they were returned to the rescue).  She even asked if it would be OK for her to ask people for money towards the adoption fee if they ask her what she wants for Christmas.

I’m going to talk to her about them when I get home and I’m pretty sure she’s going to jump at this chance.  I will now be the owner of 6 rabbits, four of which are actually mine and two that belong to my kid.

Oh yeah, and they were filmed for the puppy bowl at Discover Channel Studio.  How cool will that be for her to say she owns the puppy bowl bunnies?

Are they behaving negatively somewhere else or at your house? I’m confused… I may have missed your other posts about them.

            They’re at the rescue.

Ahhhh. So she is saying that they have been acting up b/c they left your house.

I’m not sure what I would do. Would she be losing you as a foster if you adopted these bunnies? Would that be the total bunny limit, foster or otherwise? 6 buns are a lot.

She doesn’t use fosters very often, only for old, sick/injured, or baby bunnies. I’ve only fostered for her twice. I fostered for another rescue for a few months and then decided that fostering had to stop because I was overrun with rabbits that were not mine.

If Amber gets these rabbits they will be free range in her bedroom. We’ll start with them being in a pen and graduate to no cage. They were THAT good when they were living with me. My rabbits will still be downstairs. Amber spends the majority of her time in her bedroom.

yeah, 6 buns are a handful (well, five since I lost Simba) but those agouti boys are awfully pretty….want, NO, want, NO, want, NO

sounds like it’s almost a done deal 😉

Oh okay… I know you’ve fostered in the past, but was not sure how often you were doing it. It sounds like it could work out.

I have a house full of animals anyway. For a long time I had two dogs, four rabbits, three ferrets and a rat. I’ve lost one of the ferrets and the rat…so technically I’ll still be at the same total number of animals that I’ve had for the last few years, except I won’t have to pay to feed two of the rabbits.

I love those guys too so it’s not like I wouldn’t like to bring them back home. Gah, I shouldn’t work with animals, my house is ALWAYS full. But…better rabbits than dogs. I used to always have 4 or 5 dogs. 6 rabbits is way easier to deal with than 5 dogs.

TARM, I really love those two agouti boys so my advice is biased in their favor! It sounds like it would cost you very little, and you know how to manage many animals in your home already. Plus, 6 rabbits are only a lot of work if it’s you doing all the cleaning but you’ve posted before that Amber is awesome when it comes to that. I would go for it, you can get those litter habits back on track, I’m sure.

                          Firstly…

Secondly – What about a trial period also? Say 3 months to see if it all can work. It would relieve Mary Ellen for that time and give you an idea of how things will go long term. Or do you think that’s unfair on the boys?

Edit: I’ve been meaning to ask…how did Tank and Rangers litter habits go?  You had tried a different litter or hay on top to see if it helped – is that right?

Well, Amber is excited and she called Mary Ellen to say she wants to adopt them. Not sure when we’re picking them up but it’ll be no later than next week.

Jersey~I already know it’ll work with these two boys. I kind of didn’t want to give them back to the rescue in the first place. This just means I won’t be getting a flemmie. Or that adorable frenchie I lugged around all last weekend. *sigh*

I do not wish to discuss the litter habits of my piglet bunnies.

Welp. Amber is currently locked in her room with her new roommates. Oliver and Ozzie came home this afternoon. She is so excited and they seem to be pretty happy in their new digs.

I was gonna take pictures but my camera batteries are dead! Gah! I’ll post some as soon as I get more.

They’ll definitely work out. I love those guys too. I almost didn’t let them go back to Bunny Lu when they were at my house the first time but they’re perfect for first time bunny owners. I wanted to give a family who is new to rabbits a chance to adopt them…but no one showed the least bit of interest. I’ll bet we would have gotten tons of inquiries after the puppy bowl but Amber got lucky. Mary Ellen knows how much Amber loves those guys so she finagled them into my house by giving Amber the option to work for their food and hay.

I guess I won’t be getting my flemmie any time within the next 10 years. *sigh*

And don’t even ask me about the gorgeous 4 month old french lop I’ve been lugging around every time I go to the shelter….
