Oh no  I am so upset

I accidentally came across this bunny on gumtree classifieds and it is not a good story!

Some girl in Elizabeth, South Australia has a boy and a girl, they bred and now she has babies… and so she is getting rid of the male (which is still in with the female, babies are about 3 weeks old), she is getting rid of the babies in 2 weeks, and the mother might be pregnant again so she is giving away the Dad

We cant have her because we dont have room

Jersey, are there any rescue bunny associations near Elizabeth because seriously, this rabbit is living on corn on the cob. Its in the pics anyway.

But we dont have room and it looks so sweet. Carl says it looks like a Kangaroo!

I was up all night thinking of bringing him home, but I think it would be mean because we dont really have room when the babies grow up.

I only found this one in Australia:

                Australian Animal Protection Society
The Australian Animal Protection Society is in Keysborough, a suburb of Melbourne. There is a range of rabbits here and all are desexed and vaccinated. Potential homes are carefully scrutinised to ensure the rabbit’s welfare.
                http://www.aaps.org.au

                is it near Elizabeth?

I’ve seen this pair before on Gumtree but totally missed that about a litter.  Maybe this has happened since I first saw them?

The only rabbit specific rescue in SA is actually at Smithfield, so not far from Elizabeth.  If Sally cannot take them she may be able to advise what the next step should be. http://www.wildwoodbunnies.com/

I found a pair on Gumtree (possibly still listed) that someone was wanting to rehome. I recognised them from the RSPCA adopt-a-pet site and it seemed only a month after adopting them that this person was then selling them. Asking $290 for the pair and the hutch included. They would have been $40 each from the RSPCA. I rang RSPCA to see if they had a policy about returning to them if you couldn’t keep the pets you adopt. It all came to nought.

I have been up all night thinking about him Carl said its not a good idea to bring him home because we dont know how big the babies are going to grow, and we wont have space when they are grown up
But I cant stop thinking about him

So Jersey, is this the one from the RSPCA you were talking about?

No, that was some time ago. I was also thinking about how you’d been involved with RSPCA shelters thru work lately. Maybe give them a call. They won’t be able to seize the rabbit(s) but they could contact the owner and see if they’re interested in surrendering them. The RSPCA will have them fixed and they did say they have a waiting list. Just a thought….

Katharine, it is difficult but we cannot save every rabbit. Sadly, there’ll be another listing like this one on that site in a short time. Just act on the things you can do to make a difference. I know, it’s difficult. The more you learn about the plight of animals the harder it becomes to know your limitations, keep emotions down and remain practical. I know.

EDIT: Just and update – The buck has already been sold.   I find the ads on the site are often not removed.

Thank you so much jersey, you are an angel!
I know that we can not save every rabbit — or every cat, or every guinea pig, or dog, or bear etc. We see the most horrible things sometimes, and it tears me to pieces. I just think sometimes, if there is anything at all I can do to make a difference…
I am working at the RSPCA this afternoon, in the city. I will bring this situation up to the head inspector, and see if there is anything they can do. They are begging for baby buns at the moment so it could be a good outcome, and if the lady is after money for the babies, (it seems she is) then I am happy to pay for the surrender fee. I know I cant save them all, but its ok to help, isn’t it?
Happy vibes to Grey Buck Bunny . I hope he found a good home

Absolutely! That’s what I mean, do what you can. It’s just “bringing them all home plan” that is the one you normally have to scrap. That’s really thoughtful Kafrn, I hope RSPCA can give you some tips about what difference we can make. Do share what they tell you.
